Florentine scholar Antonio Magliabechi (1633-1714) has been described as a literary glutton. His house was choked with 40,000 books and 10,000 manuscripts, and he spent hours each day in the Medici library.

The negligent Magliabechi reportedly once forgot to draw his salary for a full year, but his head was "an universal index, both of titles and matter." When the Duke of Florence asked him for a particular volume he replied, "Signore, there is but one copy of that book in the world; it is in the Grand Signore's library at Constantinople, and is the eleventh book in the second shelf on the right hand as you go in."

That memory made him a human search engine for writers of the time

Surrounded by books, he lived to be 81, and in his will he left his library to the public.

Un medico anestesista dell’Ospedale Niguarda di Milano si è rifiutato di somministrare un antidolorifico a una paziente ricoverata per un aborto terapeutico. La donna, un’ucraina di 30 anni, sostiene di essere rimasta in balia di dolori fortissimi, placati solo da un’iniezione di morfina successivamente praticata per iniziativa del primario.
La donna si è in seguito rivolta alla CGIL per denunciare il fatto. Il nosocomio del Niguarda è considerato un baluardo di CL, e la percentuale di obiettori di coscienza è più alta della media (14 medici su 19).

Big business meant extra dough for art

Europe in the 14th century was a downtrodden place, ravaged by war and a plague that killed nearly half its people. Florence was hard hit by the Black Death, but those who survived tended to be rich as well as newly critical of absolute faith in religion. The conditions were ideal for a cultural transformation, according to historians.

Saturn: jewel of the solar system, taker of breaths, ringed beauty. Even veteran astronomers can't help but gasp when they see her through a small telescope.

Red Alert: Saturn's rings are vanishing.

"The rings have narrowed considerably in the last year," he reports. "The Cassini division (a dark gap in the rings) is getting hard to see."

Four hundred years ago, the same phenomenon puzzled Galileo. Peering through a primitive spy glass, he discovered Saturn's rings in 1610 and immediately wrote to his Medici patrons: "I found another very strange wonder, which I should like to make known to their Highnesses…." He was dumbfounded, however, when the rings winked out little more than a year later.

we're experiencing a "ring plane crossing." As Saturn goes around the sun, it periodically turns its rings edge-on to Earth—once every 14-to-15 years. Because the rings are so thin, they can actually disappear when viewed through a small telescope

Giovanni Pico della Mirandola's fame has faded, but he was a celebrated figure at the Medici court. The flamboyant philosopher became an instant favourite of Lorenzo de' Medici when he arrived in Florence in 1486. Lorenzo was charmed by Pico, who was essentially a Platonic philosopher influenced by Oriental mysticism.
He became famous for his incredible memory and his knowledge of Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic and Arabic.
Savonarola repeatedly preached against the Medicis, urging Florentines to reject the excesses of the Renaissance.
Works by Botticelli and Michelangelo were burned during the "Bonfire of the Vanities" in 1497, when the monk's followers set fire to lavish furniture, mirrors, pagan books and immoral sculptures in the Piazza della Signora.

Last July, a team of scientists from the universities of Bologna, Pisa and Lecce exhumed the two corpses

Yesterday they concluded that both men had been poisoned with arsenic

High levels of mercury and lead were also found

Pico's close friendship with Girolamo Savonarola, the fanatical Dominican friar, appears to have earned him the enmity of Lorenzo's son, Piero de' Medici

The forensic scientists believe it was Piero who ordered Pico's death.

Scientists want to learn more about their lives and find out what caused their deaths.

Pico della Mirandola, a humanist philosopher, and the scholar and poet Angelo Ambrosini, known as Poliziano, both died in Florence in 1494.

They belonged to the court of the powerful Medici family.

Pico della Mirandola is believed to have been poisoned, but this has never been confirmed.

Now, DNA analysis of his bones could establish beyond doubt whether this story is true or not.

Poliziano - who was believed to have been one of Pico della Mirandola's lovers - is also a possible poison victim. But another theory is that he died from syphilis, which killed thousands of people all over Europe in an outbreak at the end of the 15th Century.
