Federal Reserve Chairman Admits Agency is Above the Law and the President

Those that read and enjoyed such posts as The Crash Course and Money as Debt will understand the significance of, and not be surprised by, the Federal Reserve (now former) chairman clearly stating that the Federal Reserve is a private agency, above the law, above the president and should not be subject to any outside interference. Despite having such a pivotal role in the U.S., and hence the world economy, the Federal Reserve is thus no different than private corporations like Monsanto, McDonalds, Tesco, etc. – it’s not working for the benefit of citizens, but is working for profit for its shareholders.

The bankers dictate to governments, and manipulate the populace, not the other way around – and boy do they have the tools and position to enable them to do so. What a wonderfully privileged position they hold….

clipper's remarks: I just finished reading ‘Don’t Eat This Book’ by Morgan Spurlock (the guy who did Supersize Me http://freedocumentaries.org/film.php?id=98 ) . I will NEVER eat fast food again.

It is truly scary what food processors do to our food and what they do to it again to make it palatable.

Of course, McDonalds tries to down play Spurlock’s ‘prank’ by criticizing that he ate 5,000 calories per day and did not exercise. The problem with that logic is that there are people who do the same thing.

According to Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food nation, his research indicates that in 2001 there were about 30,000 McDonalds and says they open about 2,000 a year. So that means there are probably more like 47,000 McDonalds today.in the U.S.

If our pictures of fast food haven’t totally put you off, you’re in luck: In the United States, it is never more than 145 miles to the nearest McDonald’s. And that’s in North Dakota.

As you can see from the map above, you usually are a lot closer. In the east, south, and midwest, the country is basically blanketed with the Golden Arches. What I find most shocking about this map (made by Stephen Von Worley of Weather Sealed), is how perfectly the McDonald’s locations outline the country’s borders, especially the Canadian border. It’s as if they’ve figured that before you leave the country to go to some heathen otherland, the last thing you need to fortify yourself for your journey is a Big Mac.

Most deep-fried fish sandwiches from chain restaurants—including Denny's, Long John Silver's, and most certainly McDonald's—use hoki, a pretty ugly, bug-eyed fish found deep in the waters around New Zealand. But that may change, according to this New York Times piece.

Drops in hoki spawn and damaged ecosystems have inspired the World Wildlife Fund to fight for reduced hoki fishing. In response, the New Zealand ministry has cut the allowable commercial catch quota from roughly 275,000 tons to 100,000 tons, which means McDonald's had to shrink its usual consumption of about 15 million pounds of hoki to 11 million pounds per year.

While rooting for the overfishing of hoki is probably not the right move here, some of us are definitely rooting for the preservation of the Filet-O-Fish. Would it taste the same with a different fish? Perhaps

Either way, this article confirms that the Filet-O-Fish does in fact contain fish, which is good.

How anyone could sit down to a leg of lamb knowing that a gentle creature had to suffer and be deprived of its life merely to satisfy 5 minutes of a human desire to eat flesh is beyond me.

This is not the first time that undercover footage has lead to calls for change in the food industry. The Hallmark/Westland meat recall, the largest in US history, was touched off by footage shot by a Human Society volunteer who took a job at the slaughterhouse.

These videos point to the rapid change towards transparency that is being forced upon businesses. Companies that expect that they can operate behind closed doors in a way that would offend the sensibilities or ethical standards of the public are being forced to change. But will consumers be willing to pay more, or spend more time, for food that is not produced in an industrial fashion?

Although we may not be able to stop these shocking practices today, we can pressure a large player in the chicken meat industry, McDonalds, to adopt more humane methods for slaughter. Click to sign the petition letter.
