We need to recognize that there isn't a single solution, such as creating small schools or charter schools. We need to rely on good data and good judgment about what works. And we need to have the patience to support sustained efforts.

We know that early childhood education sets the stage for school success, especially for children living in poverty.

We must invest in good practice.

Much is a stake regarding the decisions we make for all our children, and it is nothing less than our democratic way of life. If we decide that we want to invest in education, the results for the country will be great: global competitiveness, scientific discoveries and productive citizens.

We, the people, must acknowledge our responsibility in driving the issues of this election cycle. And then needed presidential leadership will follow.

Gwyneth Paltrow is starring in the Tod's fall 2008 campaign, but the newly released advertisements have caused an outrage amongst animal rights activists. The actress modeled the Italian company's fall 2008 collection, draped in fox fur, wearing fur-lined boots, and sporting leather, ostrich and snakeskin accessories.

Ironically, Gwyneth Paltrow is known for being one of the more eco-friendly celebrities and her husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, is a prominent celebrity vegetarian. Even more so, Gwyneth has infuriated her personal friend, designer Stella McCartney, who does not use any animal products in her gorgeous designs.

But husband and designer-friend aside, she has really enraged animal rights advocacy groups, such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and Respect for Animals, causing them to lash out. PETA even went as far as to criticize her parenting skills: "Gwyneth Paltrow won't be the apple of her daughter's eye if she continues to flaunt fur...

Phil Collins' $53.7m divorce payout to third wife

PHIL Collins has given his ex-wife, who he met when she was 22, $A53.73 million in what is believed to be the biggest ever divorce settlement in UK showbiz history.

The payout tops the STG24.3 million ($A52.23 million) Paul McCartney gave to his former wife Heather Mills and the STG17 million ($A36.54 million) Collins paid to his second wife Jill Tavelman after dumping her in 1994.

Britain's Sunday Mirror tabloid said Collins' payout to Cevey meant he had handed over more than a third of his estimated STG140 million ($A300.91 million) fortune.

"Marriage has certainly not come cheap for Phil," a music industry source told the newspaper.

"He has now made two of the biggest divorce payments in showbiz history.

"At least no one can accuse him of leaving his ex-wives short."

A tape of a Beatles recording session in which John Lennon and Paul McCartney are heard cracking jokes and breaking into giggles, has sold for £9,800.

During the recording of I'll Follow The Sun - which appeared on the Beatles For Sale LP - Lennon says: "I'm not looking at you," to which McCartney replies: "You were".

New Bond theme song to be duet

Alicia Keys and Detroit native Jack White have recorded the theme song for the new James Bond film, "Quantum of Solace," producers said Wednesday.

The R&B singer and White Stripes frontman have teamed up for "Another Way to Die," the first duet to be chosen as a Bond theme.

Producers said White wrote and produced the song and also plays drums, as well as sings with 11-time Grammy winner Keys.

Producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said they were "delighted and pleased to have two such exciting artists as Jack and Alicia, who were inspired by our film to join together their extraordinary talents in creating a unique sound for 'Quantum of Solace.' "
