Als er m rijen zijn en n kolommen spreekt men van een m×n-matrix, als n = m is het een vierkante matrix. De getallen heten de elementen van de matrix. Een m×n-matrix A heeft dus m×n elementen. Het element op het kruispunt van de r-de rij en de k-de kolom wordt aangeduid als het rk-de element en genoteerd als $A r k$ . Voor de matrix zelf noteert men wel: $(A r k)$ . Ook andere notaties worden gebruikt, onder andere waarin het rk-de element van een matrix A geschreven wordt als $a r k$ . Het volgende voorbeeld toont een 2×3-matrix A met gehele getallen:

Een dichotomie is de opdeling in twee niet-overlappende structuren of begrippen. De term komt van het Griekse dichotomia, wat tweedeling betekent. De term wordt in uiteenlopende wetenschapsgebieden gebruikt, waaronder de filosofie, sociologie, politicologie, biologie en wiskunde.

In sommige disciplines, waaronder de bedrijfswetenschappen, is de praktijk van het combineren van meerdere dichotomieën populair. Door twee dichotomieën te combineren ontstaat een 2 bij 2 matrix, zoals gehanteerd in de BCG-matrix. Een voorbeeld van een combinatie van drie dichotomieën is het drie dichotomieën-model van de marketing.

A matrix is two dimensional array or "box" of numbers or more complicated things.
There are (easy) rules for adding and subtracting matrices of the same shape and sometimes (more complicated) rules for multiplying or even dividing them.
Sets of square matrices often form interesting algebraic objects like groups or more general structures.

The most common form of matrix in social network analysis is a very simple square matrix with as many rows and columns as there are actors in our data set. The "elements" or scores in the cells of the matrix record information about the ties between each pair of actors.
