What Keeps Men Away From Marriage?

"Marriage should not be a parameter by which people are judged," says Weisman, author of "So Why Have You Never Been Married? 10 Insights Into Why He Hasn't Wed."

Sometimes he will even respond, "I forgot to get married."

Weisman, 49, surveyed 1,533 single men in their 40s or older to provide insight about men's feelings and to dispel myths that they hate women, are selfish or have a disdain for marriage.

He found that money plays a significant role as to why men choose not to commit.

Weisman says men in their 40s who are not doing well do not feel that they have anything to offer. Men who have done well are terrified about what a divorce could do to their finances.

Weisman says he also finds that men are terrified of choosing the wrong woman. He says men who have had the courage to make a different choice than the stereotype of settling down should be considered heroes.

"These single men hold marriage so high that they don't want to screw it up," he says.

Sen. McCain opposes ANWR drilling. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal in June, Gov. Palin said that when she met with Sen. McCain at a governor's conference in Washington, they discussed energy but parted company on the issue of drilling in ANWR, which he has opposed.

And in regard to her position on a social issue:

she supports abstinence-until-marriage programs, where teens are taught to refrain from sex until marriage and contraception is discussed only to explain its failings.

....."Christian conservatives" should see she did not do a very good job in her own family on that issue (i.e. Bristol's pregnancy and open under-age drinking), instead of giving her blind praise.

Focus Turns to Palin Record

In the five days since Sen. John McCain announced Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential running mate, she has been embraced by the right and pilloried by the left as a staunch conservative on social and economic issues.

But a look at her record as mayor of the small town of Wasilla and as governor of Alaska shows a politician more flexible in her ideology as she has juggled the needs of governing.

Gov. Palin has supported abortion restrictions and floated the idea of pulling books she considered offensive from a local library. But she also drew the ire of the religious right by shelving calls for new abortion limits, when she worried it would distract from her bipartisan deal to push through a new gas pipeline. She forced through property-tax cuts, but also raised taxes on oil companies. She has close relations with organized labor, backing union contracts on a state pipeline.

But Gov. Palin has also at times pushed more taxes and more spending.

During the RNC convention in St. Paul, Minn., delegates passed the party platform, which contained a few references to LGBT people. The platform mentioned “the incompatibility of homosexuality with military service,” which means the party continues to support the military policy “Don't Ask, Don't Tell.”

The platform also mentioned the party's continued support of a Federal Marriage Amendment, which would ban same-sex marriage across the nation. The platform also went after activist judges who rule in favor of advancing LGBT rights.

One of the most talked about news coming out of the RNC was the announcement of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as McCain's running mate. Palin supported a 1998 Alaska constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. Also, one of the first things she did when elected to office was veto a bill that would have granted same-sex partners of state employees domestic partner benefits.

Same-sex marriage does not diminish marriage between a man and a woman. It's a basic civil right that everyone - regardless of gender - should have. The time has come. Therefore, we oppose Proposition 8.

Proposition 8 is a constitutional amendment that would overturn the state Supreme Court's decision to legalize same-sex marriage. If passed, the measure prohibits legal same-sex marriage. We would never support any amendment of the Constitution that would serve to take fundamental rights away from people.

A Field Poll taken in July shows that 51 percent of voters are against the proposition.

An Aug. 27 Public Policy Institute of California survey shows that 54 percent of California voters oppose the measure.

It says you are not good enough, not right enough to join the rest of society and live among the masses with your heads held high. That was the wrong message decades ago. It's certainly the wrong message to send now. In California, we're more progressive than that.

Both sides in a legal case over same-sex marriage benefits say recent developments in similar cases could prompt a resolution for an Ontario County couple.

David Harmon, an associate professor of history at Finger Lakes Community College, is suing the college for refusing to grant health benefits to his spouse, Kevin Mayer.

Gov. David Paterson’s counsel told state agencies in May that a recent state appellate court ruling required them to recognize gay marriages legally performed elsewhere — or risk discrimination claims.

Paterson was responding to a Feb. 1 ruling by an appellate court that backed giving spousal health benefits to a Monroe County couple. Patricia Martinez had sued Monroe Community College after the college refused to provide health insurance to her spouse, Lisa Ann Golden. Martinez and Golden were married in Canada, where same-sex marriage is legal.

Patrick Sammon, president of the national gay Republican group, Log Cabin Republicans, said he has no doubt that two top McCain campaign leaders visited the group during the convention because they know the race with Democrat Barack Obama will be another very close contest.

The Human Rights Campaign responded to the endorsement by pointing out that the Republican Party "has declared in its platform that they want to pass the federal marriage amendment."

"Their party’s platform also calls gay and lesbian Americans unfit for military service, supports policies that would allow faith-based organizations to deny us jobs and services using federal dollars, and attacks judges who acknowledge our equality under the law," said HRC.

Sammon acknowledges that the GOP platform is "awful" but he says it’s also irrelevant.

Kitzen and Jeni Branting have been in a committed lesbian relationship since high school and plan to get legally married in Oregon next spring.

True, voters amended the state Constitution in 2004 to allow marriage only between a man and a woman. And Congress outlawed gay marriage more than 10 years ago.

But Kitzen Branting, 25, is a member of the Coquille Indian Tribe on the southern Oregon coast, and as a federally recognized sovereign nation, the tribe is not bound by the state Constitution.

The tribe recently adopted a law that recognizes same-sex marriage and extends to gay and lesbian partners -- at least one of whom must be a Coquille -- all tribal benefits of marriage.

The Coquilles are probably the first tribe in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage, says Brian Gilley, a University of Vermont anthropology professor and the author of the book Becoming Two-Spirit: Gay Identity and Social Acceptance in Indian Country.

The Log Cabin Republicans endorsed candidate George W. Bush in 2000 but rejected him in 2004 after his campaign used gay marriage as a wedge issue in an effort to win over conservative voters, said Jimmy LaSalvia, the organization's programs and policy director.

McCain was among a small group of conservatives who opposed the amendment, calling it "antithetical in every way to the core philosophy of Republicans."

Log Cabin Republicans are optimistic but admittedly in the dark about Palin's positions on gay and lesbian issues. They cite Palin's veto as governor of a bill that would have denied benefits to gay state employees and their partners. However, her reasons for vetoing the legislation are complicated.

On a personal level, we don’t give a hoot whether Sarah Palin abstained or not. From a voter’s perspective, one of the most important issues is whether or not the candidate is honest, open and virtuous. If Sarah Palin did not abstain as a teenager, why is she the authority on abstinence? It’s bad enough she’s trying to tell our nation’s children they have to abstain when she couldn’t even get her own daughter to listen to that simple message.

It’s called hypocrisy. You can do whatever you want because you’re a Christian and can be forgiven and supported for your sins. BUT, and this is a very big but, you expect something more of others. If you can’t live up to the standards you hold for others, then you are a hypocrite. It’s plain and simple logic.

I'd heard of foot-binding from reading Pearl Buck, but I'd never seen what the results looked like.

As to the photos, I see no reason to disbelieve them. Foot binding was formerly practised in China, the woman looks old enough to have been subject to it, and the pictures of her feet are consistent with what I've seen of bound feet in the past.

In 1911, the Republic of China government banned foot binding; women were told to unwrap their feet lest they be killed. Some women's feet grew 1/2 - 1 inch after the unwrapping, though some found the new growth process extremely painful and emotionally and culturally devastating. Societies developed to support the abolition of footbinding, with contractual agreements between families promising their infant son in marriage to an infant daughter that would not have her feet bound. When the Communists took power in 1949, they maintained the strict prohibition on footbinding, which is still in effect today.

A 17-year-old Pakistani girl forced to marry a 45-year-old when she was only nine was reportedly killed by her parents, according to the Weekend Australian.

The murder has intensified despair among human rights workers in Pakistan over a recent spate of "honor killings," in which two women and three teenage school girls were buried alive in Baluchistan Province because they wanted to marry the men of their choice.

Saira Nusrat Bibi was successfully fighting a legal battle to have her marriage annulled. As she left court in the Punjabi city of Sahiwal, she was surrounded by a group of men reportedly sent by her parents, and shot in front of police, The Australian reported.

The Baluchistan case was worsened by an attempt by a member of the country's national parliament, Senator Israr Ullah Zehri, to defend it, telling colleagues that "these are centuries-old traditions and I will continue to defend them,” The Australian reports.

Father, brothers shoot girl in court

LAHORE: A 17-year-old girl was shot dead by her brothers and father while in police custody in Sahiwal on Wednesday. According to Dawn News, Sara alias Nusrat Bibi had appeared in the Sahiwal Sessions Court to seek the dissolution of her marriage. She was married in 2001 when she was just a 9-year-old. However, she had subsequently filed a petition in the court seeking to dissolve her marriage, against the will of her brothers and father. The court had given the decision in her favour.
