Nearly everyone has a good idea of what Washington looks like now — broad avenues, columned porticos, the tree-lined Mall, the Capitol, the Washington Monument. But what was here before all that? Turns out that’s been a tough question for scholars to answer, according to an article in The Washington Post Magazine. Early maps are scarce, early drawings are unreliable, and the original landscape has been significantly altered as the city has grown up.

Satellite Imaging Firm Depends on Successful Launch for Rebound, Chief Says

On Thursday at 11:50 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time, GeoEye chief executive Matthew O'Connell plans to be at Vandenberg Air Force Base, watching a Boeing Delta II rocket roar into the California sky, carrying GeoEye's new imaging satellite -- and the hopes of his company's future. If all goes well, he'll hand out cigars.

From its orbiting height of 425 miles, GeoEye-1 will have fine enough resolution to pick out home plate at Nationals Stadium. It will sell photographs to its biggest customer, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and commercial customers including Google Maps.

The Dulles company has a lot riding on Thursday's mission. It has postponed the launch twice. And earlier this summer, the company announced it would restate accounting from 2005 to 2007.

Galactic hitchhikers visiting our solar system, if they exist, would probably love to get their hands on a new guide that puts GPS to shame.

A planetary scientist has made the most detailed maps of our local planets, moons and asteroids yet by combining hundreds of spacecraft images to chart all the nooks and crannies of numerous surfaces, including the asteroids Phobos, Itokawa and Eros. Upcoming targets for mapping include the planet Mercury and eight of Saturn's moons, such as frozen Enceladus with its icy geysers, as well as Earth's moon.

"I have three computers crunching away right now," said Robert Gaskell, a planetary scientist based in Altadena, Calif., who works at the Planetary Science Institute. "One's working on the moon, one's working on Eros, and another's working on Mercury."

Calibration of a device location measurement system that utilizes wireless signal strengths

An architecture for minimizing calibration effort in an IEEE 802.11 device location measurement system. The calibration technique is based upon a regression function that produces adequately accurate location information as a function of signal strength regardless of gaps in the calibration data or minimally available data. The algorithm takes a set of signal strengths from known room locations in a building and generates a function giving (x,y) as a function of signal strength, which function may then be used for the estimation of new locations. Radial basis functions, which are simple to express and compute, are used for regression. The fact that the algorithm maps signal strength to continuous location makes it possible to skip rooms during calibration, yet still evaluate the location in those rooms.
