Google’s much talked about Google Wave is here and every day new people are receiving their much sought after invite. Now that you are a part of the Wave here are five things you absolutely can’t miss:

1. Read the Extensions Gallery Wave and install all of the Extensions. (Except the Extensions installer unless you are a über geek developer).

2. Add the following contacts that will never talk to you but are worth having around:

3. Find people near you or from that dream land you always wanted to live in. Just add yourself to the “Where is everyone from? The Mapping Way” wave and add yourself to the map (or just snoop around).

4. Add Sound and Video to your wave and share it with others.

Invite up to 6 friends to a wave and have a video conference with them.

8. ApE
ApE is an all-in-one plasmid and sequence workbench. Sequences can be uploaded to ApE manually, direct from the NCBI database or from ABI chromatogram traces. ApE can be used for sequence annotation, restriction mapping, primer design and sequence alignment. A great all round tool.

9. Cn3D
Cn3D… say it out loud… “see in 3D”. This great piece of software from NCBI is a sequence viewer with a difference. Not only does it perform 2D alignments, it also allows the user to see the position residues in the 3D protein sequence. Great for mutagenesis studies.

10. BioToolKit
This is one packed toolkit! Primer design, antibody design, microarray analysis, calculators for molecular weight, molar concentration and OD, centrifguation speed converter, label printing templates… and much more! Phew!

At TechCrunch, we’ve always been big fans of mobile social networks, particularly on the iPhone. In fact, Loopt, one of the first location-based iPhone apps and social networks to gain popularity, was offered a feature, called Mix, that acts as a social compass that allows people to connect with and learn about others around them. Mix turned out to be such a popular feature that Loopt is breaking the feature out into its own free iPhone app.

Loopt is basically a social-mapping app that allows you to discover the world around you on your mobile phone. Mix was the part of the app that let you meet new people (who also have the app) nearby. You see a list of people, profiles/interests, their latest status, ranked by their approximate distance to you and can message the people who you find compelling. While Mix can be used for any type of connection with users, Loopt’s co-founder and CEO Sam Altman says the feature is primarily used for dating and love connections.

Described as the Wikipedia of mapping, OSM will see groups of volunteers (200 will take to the streets in Atlanta) armed with global positioning devices, spread out to map the city.

"If you are an iPhone developer and you want to make a map of pizza joints in San Francisco or Atlanta, you basically have two choices," said Mr Coast.

"You can use Google maps but there are restrictions on what you can do with the data or you can pay tens of thousands of dollars to license the data from other organisations.

Speaking to the BBC, Frank Howell from the Office of Research and Policy Analysis said, "We aim to map everything from bike paths to emergency phones and police precincts,"

"With OpenStreetMap, it's basically plug and play. We want you to take that data for free and use it how you see fit," added Mr Coast.
