McCain's "Judeo-Christian Values" References Troubling

On a frozen winter evening at a Town Hall meeting in a school in the Manchester, N.H., suburbs, John McCain expressed surprise and irritation with an intelligence report downplaying the threat of Iran's nuclear program.

At the end of a long list of reasons to be suspicious of the Iranians, McCain declared: "And they sure don't share our Judeo-Christian values."

It seemed at the time to be an odd thing to say about a Muslim country. After all, even if there were no nuclear program, no oil, and no rabble-rousing president, Iran still wouldn't have Judeo-Christian values. And it's troubling to wonder if that alone would be a reason for suspicion.

Over the following years my impression of Britain as an expensive place was confirmed, especially when I compared it with Germany and Australia, the two countries where I had previously lived. Unfortunately, the Ikea price hikes were not the worst difference. Train tickets were bad, too: London to Manchester and Cologne to Hanover are about the same distance, yet a standard second class single will set you back £115 in Britain but only £49 in Germany. A trip from Berlin-Alexanderplatz to Schönefeld airport costs the equivalent of £1.67. A similar journey from central London to Heathrow, however, is £4 on the tube and £14.50 on the Heathrow Express.

Britain is one of the most expensive countries on the planet and London its rip-off capital. Filling your car, eating out, staying at a hotel or just doing the weekly shopping are all more costly undertakings than in other industrialised countries around the globe – even without taking house prices into account.

A bizarre Government-funded campaign is being launched to encourage people to exercise while they’re waiting for a bus.

According to the campaign’s organisers, those minutes spent at the bus stop watching the traffic go by could be spent more usefully – by standing on one leg, pointing your toes or clenching your buttocks.

But the latest attempt to get Britain fit has been slammed by an MP as ‘a shocking waste of taxpayers’ money’.

And one angry passenger said last night: ‘Fares are ridiculously high as it is. So why don’t they use the money they’re spending on this nonsense to cut the cost of bus travel?’

Leaflets and posters setting out six Pilates-style exercise moves to do at the bus stop are being distributed to passengers travelling on buses between Blackburn and Manchester.

Organisers claim it will help people with busy lives to fit exercise into their day and avoid health problems such as heart disease and obesity.

Using animals to research pain has "limited value" and should be replaced by newer technologies, argues a panel of medical experts from across England.

Animal tests can only simulate some aspects of chronic pain and are too simplistic, their report says.

With newer brain-imaging techniques, more studies could be done in humans, they write in the journal Neuroimage.

It is critical that these often simplistic experiments are replaced with more advanced techniques that don't involve inflicting animal suffering

Ministers said at present "licensed animal use remains essential to develop improved healthcare technologies".

There are few effective and safe treatments for chronic pain, such as that suffered by people with osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia, the researchers from London, Manchester, Liverpool and Oxford say.

"New and highly sophisticated brain-imaging technology is providing vital insights that animal research has failed to produce.

Woman impaled on statue of Hindu goddess

A woman had to be cut free after impaling her arm on three-inch metal spikes attached to a statue of the Hindu goddess Kali.

The 30-year-old victim fell onto the spikes at her home in Salford, Greater Manchester.

It took firemen 30 minutes to free her by cutting through the spikes with a hacksaw.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "The woman had fallen onto the statue within the house. We had to cut through the part that she had impaled her arm on.

The victim has not been named. It is understood she "fell onto the statue while staggering around".

Kali, the goddess of time and change, is generally associated with death and destruction.
