Because polygyny means other men father few or no children, the study, published today in PLoS Genetics, also shows that, on average, women bequeath more genes to their offspring than men do.

The proportion of female to male genes passed on is not yet known. "Our follow-up work is to get a better estimate, but we believe it's at least two to one, if not more," says senior study author Michael Hammer, a geneticist at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

"This is good science, and even more notable is the increasing light it sheds on our own human nature," says David Barash, evolutionary psychologist, University of Washington in Seattle.

<clipSource>http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=the-x-chromosome-and-monogamy&sc=WR_20080930</clipSource>

FINANCIAL WIZZARDS- MAGIC MONEY

clipped by: klippety
clipper's remarks: ....and poof.... money appeared....and disappeared

Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

Words to bear in mind as we bail out banks and buy up mortgages and tweak interest rates and nothing, nothing seems to make any difference on Wall Street or Main Street. Years ago, Mr. Buffett called derivatives “weapons of financial mass destruction” — an apt metaphor considering that the Manhattan Project’s math and physics geeks bearing formulas brought us the original weapon of mass destruction, at Trinity in New Mexico on July 16, 1945.

The Wall Street geeks, the quantitative analysts (“quants”) and masters of “algo trading” probably felt the same irresistible lure of “illimitable power” when they discovered “evolutionary algorithms” that allowed them to create vast empires of wealth by deriving the dependence structures of portfolio credit derivatives.

— poof! — created $62 trillion in imaginary wealth.

silverback males of the financial world, Ben Bernanke and Henry Paulson

<clipSource>http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/12/opinion/12dooling.html?_r=1&th&emc=th&oref=slogin</clipSource>

the come hither voice

clipped by: doodleicious

Clip Source: sciencenow.sciencemag.org

The Come-Hither Voice

Female animals produce a variety of cues to let males know they're fertile and looking to mate. For example, research on humans has shown that women's faces and scents become even more attractive to men as levels of a chemical called luteinizing hormone rise in women, and their ovarian follicles prepare to release an egg. Female lap dancers even appear to earn higher tips when ovulating (ScienceNOW, 5 October). In certain animals, such as cows and elephants, the females moo, bellow, and grunt more during ovulation. But no one had looked for a link between ovulation and women's voices.

Tags: ovulation

<clipSource>http://sciencenow.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/2008/1008/3?etoc</clipSource>

ICE Raids in Election Swing States in Full Swing!

clipped by: nedhamson1
clipper's remarks: Wonder what happens to the families? in the West, according to a leading genetics expert.

Fathers over the age of 35 are more likely to pass on mutations, according to
Professor Steve Jones, of University College London.

Speaking today at a UCL lecture entitled “Human evolution is over” Professor
Jones will argue that there were three components to evolution – natural
selection, mutation and random change. “Quite unexpectedly, we have dropped
the human mutation rate because of a change in reproductive patterns,”
Professor Jones told The Times.

This is because cell divisions in males increase with age. “Every time there
is a cell division, there is a chance of a mistake, a mutation, an error,”
he said.

“For a 50-year-old father, the figure is well over a thousand. A drop in the
number of older fathers will thus have a major effect on the rate of
mutation.”

<clipSource>http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/science/article4894696.ece</clipSource>

Geneticist Claims Human Evolution Is Over

clipped by: rmowery
clipper's remarks: Hey Moses and all the other Bible dudes had tons of younger woman as extended wives

On another note, perhaps it was a built in timer to allow humans to become extinct before we destroy the earth?

Clip Source: science.slashdot.org

Geneticist Claims Human Evolution Is Over

"UK geneticist Steve Jones gave a presentation entitled Human Evolution Is Over. He asserts that human beings have stopped evolving because modern social customs have lowered the age at which human males have offspring, which results in fewer of the mutations necessary to drive evolutionary change. Apparently the fate of our species now depends upon older guys hooking up with younger woman. Human evolution is grinding to a halt because of a shortage of older fathers
in the West, according to a leading genetics expert.

“Human social change often changes our genetic future,” he said, citing
marriage patterns and contraception as examples. Although chemicals and
radioactive pollution could alter genetics, one of the most important
mutation triggers is advanced age in men.

This is because cell divisions in males increase with age. “Every time there
is a cell division, there is a chance of a mistake, a mutation, an error,”

Tags: evolution

<clipSource>http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/science/article4894696.ece</clipSource>

Green candidate claims government killed 5,000

clipped by: rmowery

Clip Source: www.worldnetdaily.com

Green candidate claims government killed 5,000

McKinney: 'Data was entered into a Pentagon computer'

The former Democratic congresswoman from Georgia who now is the Green Party's

But even this august institution has to confront the realities of the 21st century. For more than 300 years, it has been an inviolable rule that neither monarchs nor their spouses can be Roman Catholic. The rules of succession also require that a first-born son gets the top job, bypassing any older sisters. Those restrictions could finally be history, according to a report today in London's Guardian newspaper.

The anti-Catholic rule dates back to the 1701 Act of Settlement, which states that only Protestant heirs of Sophia, granddaughter of King James I, could take the throne and that neither Catholics nor those born out of wedlock could remain in the line of succession. Males were also formally decreed to take precedence over females (although this was already the accepted practice). The preference for males is just as controversial as the religious prohibition among anti-monarchists and feminists.

Tags: monarchy, british, royal, religion

<clipSource>http://www.newsweek.com/id/160865</clipSource>
