Over 22,000 pieces of sheet music (songs and instrumental works), contributed primarily by the Bagaduce Music Lending Library and the Bangor Public Library, and dating from the late nineteenth century to the late twentieth century, have been scanned as sets of high-resolution images.

AMERICA'S Amish — a quiet, reclusive people who disdain trappings of the modern world such as electricity and who travel in horse-drawn buggies — have seen their population nearly double in the past 16 years.

Members of the Anabaptist Protestant sect moved from Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries and founded communities in the north-eastern states of Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana.

Today there are Amish communities in 28 US states and the Canadian province of Ontario, according to a new study released by the Anabaptist and Pietist studies department at Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania.

While in 1992 the researchers put the Amish population at 125,000, that figure rose to 231,000 in 2008 — an 86% increase.

During that period, Amish communities were founded in the states of Arkansas, Colorado, Maine, Mississippi and West Virginia.

Meanwhile, the Amish population grew 400% in Virginia, 200% in Kentucky, and 150% in Montana.

The photos look as if they are paintings from another time and place -- a look Bradford achieves via his artful mix of flash and a shutter speed designed to either freeze his subject or to allow its movement to paint through the flash exposure. But his "exotic location" is in Maine in the northeastern US, right next to his house.

Picture 400 super-size windmills spinning in a steady, stiff ocean breeze miles off the coasts of California, New England, the mid-Atlantic, Washington state, the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico.

Even as Congress is embroiled in a sharp debate over whether to allow increased offshore oil and gas drilling, others are seriously working to develop a green source of energy along the outer continental shelf.

The winds blowing 15 miles or even farther off the U.S. coasts potentially could produce 900,000 megawatts of electricity, or roughly the same amount as nearly all the nation's existing power sources combined, according to Department of Energy estimates.

"This is a slam dunk," said George Hart, chief technical officer at the Ocean Energy Institute, a Maine-based research center. "None of this is high-tech. It can be done."

George Orwell, in his novel “1984,” described Oceania, a society in which the prime motivating force for controlling the populace was fear, both fear of its own government and its enemies. He wrote of continual war, of enemies so horrendous that the public was constrained to rigid compliance with its rulers in order to demonstrate its patriotism. Much of Orwell’s description is found again in the teachings of University of Chicago Professor Leo Strauss, who died in 1973.

Our government and news media must keep painting him as a terrible threat, not only to Israel, but also to world peace. Our administration has distorted many of Ahmadinejad’s talks into violent threats, and the media has repeated them endlessly, making them seem truthful, just as Orwell described in his novel.

Passions is the up and coming soap brought to us by James E. Reilly, the same man who pulled Days of our Lives out of a ratings slump in the 1990s. Centered around the inhabitants of Harmony, a small seaside town in Maine, Passions excels at creating romantic triangles on the show, and controversy in the fans off the show. The show is based around five core families: the Standish/Bennett clan, the Winthrop/Crane clan, the Lopez/Fitzgerald clan, and the Johnson/Russell clan. Every other character can be directly (and romantically) connected to someone in one of the other clans.

Passions premiered on July 5, 1999, and last aired on NBC on September 7, 2007, before being picked up to air on DirecTV starting September 17, 2007. Most recently, DirecTV canceled the show, but will continue airing it until August 11, 2008.

Georgia finished in the top 10 in four of the six categories we examined (economic climate, growth prospects, labor supply and regulatory environment). Just two other states, Virginia and third-ranked Washington, managed this feat.

Our rankings measure states on six main areas of importance: business costs, labor supply, regulatory environment, current economic climate, growth prospects and quality of life. Business costs are weighted the most, but low costs were not enough to keep Louisiana and West Virginia from being the bottom two in our ranking. We look at a total of 32 data points to compile rankings of the six main categories.
