It's bad enough that you can't walk around the streets of the United Kingdom with out ending up on closed circuit security camera somewhere, but now the government wants to track every air passenger, domestic and international, with photographs and fingerprints, says the Daily Mail. What's worse is some charge that the move is all in the name of making a buck.

New shopping areas and lounges in British airports mix domestic and international fliers in one area so that all can take advantage of the duty free shopping. But these common departure areas come with a whole new set of security issues to confront, like the possibility that a international terrorist or criminal could arrive on an international flight then meet up with an accomplice in the departure gate and swap tickets for a domestic carrier.

BOSTON, July 21 (UPI) -- A Washington state letter carrier who delivers the mail in a kilt says his fellow male carriers would be a lot more comfortable if they followed his lead.

Dean Peterson, 48, of Lacey, Wash., is asking members of the National Association of Letter Carriers meeting in Boston this week to approve a resolution allowing for a change in the group's uniform regulations, The Boston Globe reported Monday.

Peterson argues that kilts "are far more comfortable and suitable to male anatomy than trousers or shorts because they don't confine the legs or cramp male genitals the way that trousers or shorts do."

The 6-foot, 250-pound mail carrier joined the post office eight years ago after retiring from the Air Force.

The Globe says he has spent his family's $1,800 tax stimulus rebate to send letters about kilts to postal union branches in every state.

"Please open your hearts -- and inseams -- for an option in mail carrier comfort," Peterson wrote.

New service helps callers avoid awkward cell-phone moments

Slydial lets you connect directly with another person's cell phone voice mail, bypassing the traditional ringing process that often results -- sometimes disastrously -- with someone picking up on the other end.

Users call (267) SLY-DIAL from either a cell phone or a landline, and are prompted to enter another person's cell phone number.

Indeed, Nora Rubinoff, 45, who runs an administrative support company, At Your Service Cincinnati Ltd., has found Slydial helpful both for business and personal situations. She has left reminder messages for people one of her clients intends to interview.

The ability to call straight into someone's voice mail is not new. Most major cell phone carriers offer subscribers the option of sending voice messages to other people, but usually only to customers of the same wireless company. What's different here is that Slydial makes it possible to do it with any major wireless carrier's customer.

Wiesbaden, Germany - Government statisticians said Tuesday they think 1 million Germans simply don't exist, with long-time statistics on Germany's population out of sync with reality. Everyone living in Germany, citizen and alien, is meant to register their name and address at a local government office, and de- register themselves and their children when they move away.

The Federal Statistics Office in Wiesbaden uses the comings and goings to alter a 1987 West German census tally and numbers compiled in 1981 in communist East Germany.

The office said Tuesday it believed the current population tally of 82.2 million was too high by 1.3 million because many people had failed to de-register themselves when moving to new homes. They remained on the books as "card-index ghosts."

During the European Union census of 2011, Germany plans to calculate its population using estimates from the registers, welfare records, mail-carrier records and a detailed survey of a small sample of the population.

91-year-old pinned under car for two days

GREENDALE, Wisconsin (AP) -- A 91-year-old woman who had crawled under her car to look for her keys ended up stuck beneath an axle for two days until her mail carrier noticed letters piling up, police said.

Betty Borowski, of the Milwaukee suburb of Greendale, was found Tuesday and remained in a hospital in critical intensive care Friday, her niece Nancy DiMarco said. The hospital would not give an update on her condition Saturday.

Borowski, who lives alone, became stuck June 29 while looking for her keys; her head apparently got pinned by the axle, Greendale Police Chief Rob Dams said.

"She was pretty well wedged in there," Dams said. "It looks like she crawled under headfirst."

Borowski's mail carrier noticed Tuesday that the previous day's mail was still in her mailbox, police said. He rang the doorbell and then asked a neighbor whether he had seen Borowski lately. He hadn't, so they called police.

Talk about being in the right place at the right time.

Lisa Harrell was making a special delivery for the U.S. Postal Service when she caught Niales Morales after the 1-year-old fell out of a second-story window at her family's home in Albany, N.Y.

Police say the little girl was on a bed next to the window when she crawled out of the house and into the postal worker's arms.

“I was ringing the bell, ringing the bell when I noticed the upstairs window open. Then I saw the baby. Next thing you know I caught the baby in my arms,” Harrell tells the Daily Gazette.

How did this happen?

"[The mother] was in the room, turned her back," Albany Public Safety spokesman James Miller tells WXXA-TV. "We wouldn't advise any parent to put a bed up against a window of that nature."

Letter Carrier Catches Falling Baby

ALBANY, New York (AP) -- A postal worker is credited with saving a 1-year-old girl's life by catching her after the baby fell out of a second-story window in Albany, New York.

Lisa Harrell was delivering mail to a home late Monday morning when she noticed a baby in a window above the front door. Harrell says the next thing she knew, the baby had fallen into her arms.

When the baby's mother realized what had happened, she ran outside and grabbed the girl from Harrell. The woman thanked Harrell and then ran down the street to her mother's house.

Paramedics checked the baby at the scene but found no injuries.

No charges are being filed against the mother, who says she had placed her daughter on a bed that was up against the window. The mother said her back was turned when her daughter crawled out the open window. E-mail to a friend

Some Airlines to Offer In-Flight Internet Service

In-flight Internet access is finally taking off in the United States.

Starting next week and over the next few months, several airlines will begin taking the first steps toward offering Internet service on their planes.

On Tuesday, JetBlue Airways will begin offering a free e-mail and instant messaging service on one of its aircraft, while American Airlines, Virgin America and Alaska Airlines plan to offer a broader Web experience in the coming months.

“I think 2008 is the year when we will finally start to see in-flight Internet access become available, but I suspect the rollout domestically will take place in a very measured way,” said Henry Harteveldt, an analyst with Forrester Research. “In a few years time, if you get on a flight that doesn’t have Internet access, it will be like walking into a hotel room that doesn’t have TV.”

Mail carrier shot for delivering mail 'too late' - Chicago

A Postal Service mail carrier was shot Tuesday evening after a dispute over delivering the mail "too late" in the West Pullman neighborhood on Chicago's Far South Side, authorities said.

Robinson was delivering mail in his pushcart when the shooting occurred about 6:30 p.m. in the 100 block of West 118th Street, police said.

Preliminary reports indicate a witness "heard someone yelling at him for delivering the mail too late," said Chicago Police Capt. Ruth Wedster. "A couple of minutes later, [the witness] heard a shot."

Nobody, however, saw where the shot came from, Wedster added.

Robinson fell to the sidewalk, then jumped up and ran to a nearby home a half-block away, authorities said. From there, an ambulance was summoned for him.

"Our goal is to have all our employees back [from their route] by 5 p.m. But because Monday was a holiday [Veterans Day], volume was heavier than normal on Tuesday," Shipp said.

AT&T Tilt

The good: The AT&T Tilt features a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard and a tilting screen. The Windows Mobile 6 smart phone also offers the full gamut of wireless options, including 3G and GPS, push e-mail, a 3-megapixel camera, and support for AT&TMusic and Video.

The bad: Speakerphone quality wasn't the greatest, and talk-time battery life was on the shorter side. The Tilt was sluggish at times, and picture quality was subpar. We also had problems acquiring a GPS fix.

The bottom line: The AT&T Tilt promises to be the carrier's most powerful smart phone for business users with its full range of wireless options, Windows Mobile 6, and innovative tilt screen.

Rose Buddy founder Fearing dead at 93

Fred Fearing, internationally famous as founder of Elizabeth City?s Rose Buddies, died at Albemarle Hospital this morning. He was 93.

Pat Ruth, Fearing?s daughter, said her father died in his sleep. He had been at the hospital for a minor procedure but otherwise was feeling well, she said.

Fearing, a retired mail carrier, gained international acclaim for cofounding a group of greeters in the early 1980s who welcomed visiting boaters to Elizabeth City. The name originated from Fearing?s practice of issuing roses to visiting female boaters.

Thousands of boaters around the world had met Fearing, primarily through the wine and cheese parties he held in their honor during boating season at Elizabeth City?s waterfront. The good will Fearing showed boaters raised the city?s profile and attracted worldwide publicity. It also boosted tourism across the region.
