700 strip naked for climate message

Burgundy, France — 700 volunteers posed nude in a French vineyard to send a message about climate change. This human art installation in the South of Burgundy was created by artist Spencer Tunick - to warn about the dangers of global warming.

Dear Obama, Merkel, Jintao, Lula, Sarkozy, Zapatero, Tusk etc.

700 people have stripped naked in a vineyard to warn the world of the effects climate change will have on French wine. And a while ago, hundreds of others were prepared to pose nude on a glacier in Switzerland.

Arrogance Dooms Olympic Dream

Instead of dedicating three days and nights working the IOC members, as we hear Tony Blair did for London in its successful bid for 2012, President Obama figured all he had to do was show up for a few minutes here at Bella Center after an all-night flight on Air Force One.

But Obama was long gone by the time his ripple factor had flattened out. By then, Brazilian President Lula da Silva was wowing the room with his avuncular, rumpled flair.

With his nearest spin doctor as far away as the Amazon, Lula made his counterparts - Obama, Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and new Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatomaya - look like metrosexual façades. And the freshly scrubbed politician just did not resonate the way the guy with a face full of hair did.

Gold for South America as Rio wins Olympic vote

Brazil won the ultimate double last night. Putting itself firmly at sport’s top table for the next seven years, Rio de Janeiro will host football’s World Cup finals in 2014 and the Olympic Games two years later.

The city’s victory, celebrated by more than 100,000 people on Copacabana beach on a declared holiday, was a triumph for emerging nations and reflected a changing world order in sport and global politics.

In choosing Rio over Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago, the IOC bought into President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s message that it was “Brazil’s time”.

Rio had numerous trump cards and the bid team played them to great effect. The first was its visually stunning backdrop that will see beach volleyball on Copacabana, cycling at Sugar Loaf Mountain and rowing in the shadow of the statue of Christ the Redeemer.

Anyway, Obama probably just thinks this a fun, feel-good sideshow, stepping up for the home team. Doesn’t seem like that big a deal. What he probably hasn’t figured out is that, taken with a health-care failure, an Iran debacle, bucking the generals on Afghanistan, and that climate change thing that has “health-care redux” written all over it, being dissed by the IOC is going to make him look like an Olympic-sized loser. Can’t get anything done. Especially since the wife said it’s “gloves off” and “take no prisoners.”

It’s a big gamble. This idea that you can treat not only your own top agenda items but actual serious national security concerns with less apparent interest than a big, expensive party for your hometown, and think there won’t be consequences.

He’s being mocked as “head of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce” for the Copenhagen junket to pitch Chicago for the 2016 Olympics. Kristol at the Weekly Standard bets he’ll get some real work in, with a surprise visit to Afghanistan. Good idea … Afghanistan is just one of the increasingly serious problems he’s facing.

But the Olympics could turn out to be another.

Not just because hanging around with IOC party animals in Copenhagen when you’ve been blowing off your theater commander really doesn’t look very good.

This Reuters article suggests that while the presidential thumb on the scales is weighty, it isn’t a done deal. Flaming Brazialian socialist Lula, flaming Spanish socialist Jose Luis Zapatero and center-left DJP PM Yukio Hatoyama are all coming in to make their own plugs. It’ll be a lefty-palooza. I like Lula in this race. Very third-worldy after London 2012.

Honduran Crisis Explodes: Persecution and Panic Buying Under Coup Crackdown

The Honduran coup has dropped all pretenses of legality over the past few days as it enters into a phase of desperate repression since the return of President Manuel Zelaya on Sept. 21 and the surge in grassroots mobilization against the coup.

Juan Almendares, of the Honduran Center for Torture Prevention, reports that Honduras has become "the largest prison in the world." He notes, "There is a permanent state of siege here. Human rights organizations and medics are not even allowed to attend to the tortured and wounded. The office of the Committee for Families of the Disappeared was bombed with tear gas... Children and the sick in the hospitals are undernourished since with the curfew, which is a death warrant, they do not receive food and are dying of hypoglycemia."

Second Guarani village burned in Mato Grosso do Sul

On the morning of Sept. 18, the Guarani community of Apyka’y was violently attacked by a group of ten armed men.

The attackers are believed to be security guards, hired by the ranchers that occupy the Guarani’s land. According to Survival International, “the Guarani-Kaiowá of Apyka’y have tried several times to return to their tekoha or ancestral land, which they were forced to leave a decade ago when it was occupied by ranchers. After the Indians’ latest attempt to reoccupy their land, the rancher got an eviction order from the courts, and the community was evicted in April 2009.”

Venezuela's Chavez welcomed like star in Venice for Stone film / PHOTO

Chavez received a movie star welcome at the Venice Film Festival, where he walked the red carpet with director Oliver Stone for the premiere of the documentary "South of the Border."

"What's happening in Latin America is like a Renaissance," the Venezuelan leader told reporters. Chavez landed in Venice after visiting Iran and Turkmenistan.

Stone said he wanted to illustrate changes that put in power in many South American countries' leaders who represent the majority of their populations, a movement exemplified by Chavez. He cited Bolivian President Evo Morales, the first Indian to be elected president, and Brazil's Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a well-known trade unionist.

"If you look now, there are seven presidents, eight countries with Chile, that are really moving away from the Washington consensus control," Stone said. "But in America, they don't get that story."

France and Brazil sign nuclear deal

France's partially state-owned electric and gas utility has signed a nuclear co-operation with two Brazilian companies during a state visit to Brazil by Nicolas Sarkozy, France's president.

GDF Suez will provide assistance to Eletronuclear and Eletrobras to develop Brazil's nuclear power industry under the deal signed on Monday.

The agreement came on the same day Sarkozy was hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at an Independence Day military parade attended by thousands of people in Brasilia, the capital.

Sarkozy's visit is a sign of the developing military and technology ties between France and Brazil.

Dassault, a French aerospace company, is one of three aircraft makers who are under consideration by Lula for a $2bn contract to build 36 fighter aircraft for the Brzailian air force.

'French choice'

The Rafale fighter jet is considered to be Lula's preferred choice over the US F/A-18 Super Hornet and the Gripen NG, built by Saab, a Swedish company.

Why is Obama siding with Chavez and Castro on this matter?

I believe that, on the one hand, Obama is beginning to show his socialist tendencies, which were denounced during the American presidential campaign. On the other hand, Obama is letting himself be influenced by several presidents of Latin America, particularly Lula of Brazil, who is the real power behind the São Paulo Forum.

Can Honduras be saved from Chavez?

I think it can, but it requires the participation of all citizens, not only of Latin America, but of the U.S. as well. Honduras is facing tremendous pressures, and will not be able to bear them without the help of the world public opinion. Every article, every interview, in favor of the Honduran democracy helps to defend their institutions against Chavez’s assault.

UnoAmerica is an Alliance of Latin-American Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs), created to defend democracy and freedom, both currently in danger in our continent. We decided to recognize the new Honduran government because the ousting of President Manuel Zelaya was actually an impeachment. Zelaya wanted to change the Constitution, without the approval of the Supreme Court and the Congress, in order to stay illegally in power. As in all democratic governments, there are three branches of power in Honduras. In this case, the Executive wanted to stage a coup against the Constitution, and the other two powers (Legislative and Judiciary) did not let that happen. It is very simple.

Why is the world allied against the new government?

Obama's Deafening Silence on Honduras

The strategy of the coup regime is obviously to run out the clock on President Manuel Zelaya's remaining months in office. A presidential election, in which Zelaya is not eligible to run because of Honduras' one-term limit, is scheduled for 29 November.

In response to that strategy, the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) issued a declaration on 10 August that it would not recognise any government elected under the coup regime. It is worth noting that this was a unanimous decision. Even close US allies Colombia and Peru approved the declaration.

Then on 17 August, President Lula da Silva of Brazil, who has grown increasingly impatient with the delaying tactics, issued a joint statement with President Felipe Calderon of Mexico saying the same thing. Calderon is a rightwing president and was one of President George Bush's few allies in the region.

In fact, the US state department has still not even determined that a military coup has taken place.
