News Corp's MySpace plans a global redesign next week in an attempt to widen its demographics and boost user engagement on the site, the social networking site said on Friday.

In what it said would be the largest scale relaunch of a Web site of its size, MySpace will change its home page, navigation, profile editing, search, and MySpaceTV player facilities. Other changes will come during the summer.

The main phase of the relaunch is set for June 18.

MySpace said it had drastically overhauled the look and feel of its searches, which it said currently ranked third in total number of searches by any site.

It said it was working with Lucene Open-Source engine and community, marking the first time MySpace has contributed to the open-source community.

Extending Cuyahoga FullText Indexing (Lucene.NET)

Cuyahoga provides module developers with a simple to use wrapper classes for full text indexing with Lucene.NET.
Although wrapper classes are easy to use these classes are not generic in nature. I mean
we, as module developers, have to convert our custom content (be it static or dynamic)
to a SearchContent object so that wrapper classes can index that content. Another similar limitation is when we perform search on the indexed content we can only get collection of SearchResult objects. I also want to mention that we, as module developers, have no control over which fields will be stored/unstored, which fields will be used as keywords or which fields will not be indexed while wrapper objects build the full text index.

Its purpose is to offer web developers flexible, fast and easy-to-use services which can enhance or replace traditional data storage and access layers.

Hibernate Search brings the power of full text search engines to the persistence domain model and Hibernate experience, through transparent configuration (Hibernate Annotations) and a common API.

Collaborative filtering is the process of computing personalized recommendations by finding users with similar taste. Such techniques have been successfully used to recommend newsgroup articles, movies, music, and e-commerce products. Collaborative filtering is most known for its use on popular e-commerce sites such as Amazon.com or NetFlix.com. Today, most recommender systems are proprietary.

This free server (including source code) allows anyone to easily set up a recommendation system. It should run on any platform that supports Java 1.4. We hope it will enhance academic research and commercial application of such systems by removing the need for developers to create such an engine themselves.

What is Informa?

The goal of the Informa Project is to provide a news aggregation library based on the Java Platform. The idea was born by the authors of two Java news reader applications (HotSheet and Risotto). We intended to unify the common parts into a library which can be used by any developer who needs to address those issues in their application.

With Informa we enable you with a harmonised view on a news channel object model. Both channels and news items do have metadata assigned, it does not make any difference from which channel format they were originally retrieved (RSS 0.9x, RSS 1.0 / RDF, RSS 2.0, Atom 0.3 and Atom 1.0).

To ease finding relevant news items an integration with the full-text search engine (Jakarta's Lucene) may be used optionally.
