Pack animals suffer when they are rejected by the pack. They know instinctively that they need to belong. It’s in their DNA

Could this be the basis of our suffering? I think I’m on to something here. I think that we are pack animals, and that our insanity is that we have lost the ability to identify with our pack. Families don’t form packs anymore. Neighbourhoods seldom do. Nations have quasi-packs, and belonging to something helps a person feel better, to suffer less. But there is always the fear and obsession of rejection because these packs lack solidity and loyalty.

It’s so ephemeral for humans, belonging to a pack. The glue that binds a pack together has broken down, lost in childhood and never regained.

I think this is why we suffer, because we have forgotten how to be loyal to our pack, which in the first instance is our family.

Do I Love My Wife? An Investigative Report

How do I love thee?
I love thee with serotonin produced by my raphe Nuclei. I love thee with testosterone receptors deep in my hypothalamus. I love thee with dopamine that floods my primitive lizard brain.

Actually, I hope I love my wife with all my major brain parts — but who knows? The truth is, I don't know how I love her. That's the whole point of today's experiment. We'll see.

Right now, I'm stuck inside a whirring, clunking MRI machine at New York University. Six inches above my nose hovers an image of my smiling wife wearing a black spaghetti-strap dress.

Inside the MRI tunnel, the image of my wife vanishes from the screen. And up pops another female face. This woman has the tip of her pinkie perched alluringly on her lips. Huge lips.

It's Angelina Jolie. That's another part of the experiment. The scientists and I want to see how my love for my wife compares with my feelings for Angelina Jolie.
