Democrats Post Big Gains In Voter Registration

CLAIRTON, Pa. — Five days a week, Linda Graham trolls tattered neighborhoods of this once thriving steel city outside Pittsburgh for unregistered voters she can sign up as Democrats _ one of thousands of unknown volunteers whose work outside the limelight has already altered the basic arithmetic of the November election.

The epic nomination battle between Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton helped put millions more Democrats on the voter rolls while Republican registration declined. Now Graham, 45, has taken three months of unpaid leave from her job at Pittsburgh's Central Blood Bank in the hope of adding to those gains before the presidential vote.

She's encouraged by the response here. "They're all feeling the crunch" of lost jobs and a sagging economy, Graham said. "But people are feeling empowered. They're feeling like, you know what, I hold a little bit of power in this."

The road Abraham travelled passed through villages and cities whose names have changed or been lost to the ages.

One of those is the ancient city of Anbar.

Persians, Romans and Arabs all fought battles over this ancient city.

The Roman leader Gordian died at Anbar.

The Arab General Khalid wrested the city from the Persians.

Centuries later, U.S. Marines and Soldiers fought house to house in the same city. We know it now as Fallujah.

Scarsely two years ago, Al Anbar province was thought to be lost. But just yesterday, control of the province was handed over to the Iraqi government.

This victory will not be splashed across the headlines above the fold. It will be buried under a hurricane, a Vice Presidential nominee and the Republican Convention.

But it is a victory worthy of the ages as the coalition and Iraqi citizens defeated one of the greatest evils of our time.

Like Abraham, Gordian and the others of history who tread the banks of the Euphrates river--they have made their mark.

The incident occurred only one day after a weak Japanese bombardment of an oil facility in Santa Barbara. The objects in the LA sky were never identified.

The Battle of Los Angeles is the name given by contemporary news agencies to a sighting of one or more unidentified flying objects which took place from late February 24 to early February 25, 1942 in which eyewitness reports of an unknown object or objects over Los Angeles, California, triggered a massive anti-aircraft artillery barrage. The Los Angeles incident occurred less than three months after America's entry into World War II as a result of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Initially the target of the aerial barrage was thought to be an attacking force from Japan, but it was later suggested to be a lost weather balloon, a blimp, a Japanese fire balloon or psychological warfare technique, staged for the benefit of coastal industrial sites, or even an extraterrestrial aircraft. The true nature of the object or objects remains unknown.

Pittsburgh’s City Council approved a new green building incentive, and entertained a second which it will vote on sometime

The Lost City of Gold that Bingham was after is said to actually exist. There have been many who claim to have seen this city deep in the jungle. For those of you who are already packing their bags, you might be interested to know that it is guarded by an ancient tribe which supposedly loves tearing up and examining the entrails of white people. The tribe is said to allow only those with high spiritual growth to pass through the jungle. How they measure spiritual growth is still not known, so the careless traveler may end up dead before he even gets to prove his spiritual growth.

LOS ANGELES — The estranged husband of a Camarillo woman stabbed to death in a Century City parking garage last month lost a round Friday in his federal case, when a judge refused to release money his attorney said was necessary to preserve evidence that could exonerate him.

U.S. District Court Judge Philip Gutierrez said there was no evidence to show that the complex computer network used by James Fayed's money transmitting business held information that could clear the Moorpark man. With that determination, he turned down the defenses request for government to release $300,000 to maintain the computer system.

"It seems more like it's preserving a business rather than preserving data," Gutierrez said about the defense motion.

Gutierrez's decision, however, did leave the door open for the defense to revise the request and file it again. Fayed's attorney, Mark Hathaway, said all options would be considered.

Piercing blue eyes undimmed by the passing of 1,300 years, this is the Lady of the Mask – a mummy whose discovery could reveal the secrets of a lost culture.

She was found by archaeologists excavating a pyramid in Peru’s capital city Lima,
alongside two other adult mummies and the sacrificial remains of a child.

It is the first time a tomb from the region’s Wari culture has been discovered intact and gives historians the chance to pin down exactly how the pre-Incas buried their dead.

The mummy - assumed to be a noblewoman because of the ornate mask - was found in a crouching position surrounded by ceramics and textiles associated with female weavers.

Earlier in the week, workers at the Huaca Pucllana site removed two adult mummies found lying near the lady of the mask.

Archaeologists have been excavating the area for three years and while they found plenty of artefacts, the 30 other tombs uncovered had been looted.

To the Russian embassy in Tbilisi they brought old refrigerators, toilets, rolls of toilet paper, irons, bottles of vodka, forks and spoons, clothes and other objects that [looters from the Russian army] took interest in during their visits to private houses of Georgians, state institutions, military bases and army barracks.
People are coming up to have a closer look, shake their heads, laugh. Cars that are passing by are honking…

Speaking of philanthropy, Georgians haven’t lost their sense of humor, it seems. In response to Russian looters, Tbilisi residents set up a fine display of modern art and world-class snark in front of the city’s Russian embassy (click photos to get larger versions).

BEIJING (AFP) — South Africa's Natalie du Toit says she wants to inspire others to realise their dreams after fulfilling her ambition to compete at the Olympic Games despite having her leg amputated seven years ago.

The 24-year-old finished 16th in the women's 10 kilometres marathon swim here on Wednesday, prompting gold medal winner Larisa Ilchenko, from Russia, to insist du Toit deserved a medal just for competing.

Having lost her lower left leg in a motor accident on the way to training in her home city of Cape Town, the South African, who won six medals in the Athens pool at the 2004 Paralympics, said it had been emotional to be an Olympian.

"I think for me to come to an Olympic Games is a dream come true, my message isn't just to disabled people, but to everyone out there - you have to work hard to make your dreams reality.

"You have to keep your dreams and never give them up."

Memorial 2007 wants to commemorate the millions of Africans enslaved during the Transatlantic slave trade.

A design of the statue is being exhibited at London's City Hall from Monday until 1 December.

The exhibition at City Hall will mark International Slavery Memorial Day on 23 August.

The park's Rose Garden has been chosen as the location for the statute, which will be created by the sculptor Les Johnson.

"Hyde Park is a fitting site for a permanent memorial to the millions who lost their lives and the courageous people who fought to end the brutal transatlantic slave trade."

Be they rich, poor, rural, suburban or city, missing white women and white teens are valued. They are cherished. When violence befalls them it is “news”. It is a surprise that it happened to them—where they live. Theirs are the tragedies that must be covered. They are the victimized who must be championed. Their families are the ones deserving of justice and closure. Their families cannot be left to cope alone. They are the lost that must be found.

Nancy Grace doesn’t have an aneurysm on camera when LaToya goes missing. Dan Abrams doesn’t get outraged when Marcus or Jamar vanishes. Katie Couric and Barabara Walters don’t break down in tears when kids from South Central are murdered.

Why We Want Our Kids Back Too

I grew up in the inner cities of Chicago—places where buses hate to stop, and cabs hate to come. My parents worked hard. Most of our neighbors worked hard. Some people tried. Some people just gave up. Others gave up while they tried and vice versa.
When there was violence, we cried and tried to stop it. When there was death we cried, wondered why and tried to deal with it. But we had to do these things alone.
There were no crush of grief counselors when our 11 year olds got shot by strays or on purpose. There were no pundits filling column space and air time when our girls got raped or became pregnant too soon. And when our children came up missing… when our children came up missing…
When our children came up missing there was silence. Silence and indifference. There still is.
I saw enough missing and dead black kids coming up that it taught me something about black folks, or at least the way black folks are perceived:
Black children are disposable expectations.
