Over 65 and living with depressiom

Seniors are healthier, more affluent, more independent and living longer than ever before.

We do our elders a great disservice by clinging to stereotypes of them as a burdensome army of aging, sickly patients with bad hearts, cancerous tumours, weakening bones, bothersome bladders and faltering memories.

Far too many seniors struggling with mental illness remain isolated, lonely and disabled. And according to new research released this week, most aren't getting the help they need.

About one in five people over the age of 65 living in the community suffer from diagnosable mental illnesses such as depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia - about the same rate as the general population.

But the data exclude residents of nursing homes, retirement homes and long-term-care facilities, where rates of mental illness range from 40 to 90 per cent.

Reaching out for help when you are depressed is difficult at the best of times, but seniors face additional barriers.

through the internet
for example there are loads of apps for the iphone/ipod touch that have location aware social networking which in a city area the possibility of making connections would be massive I presume.
If we could make this type of technology available more widely say in libraries or even community iniatives would could bring more people together and help people from becoming isolated

Every year in the UK, there are some funerals which are attended by no-one. Emily Ford hears how Lucy Cohen went searching for stories of the unmourned dead to find out how, in a world of social networking, people are still dying alone.

Lucy, 27, cuts a small, unassuming figure. She speaks slowly, dreamily, looking around at no one in particular as she peels the sticker off her beer bottle. "I was thinking about whether it would be possible to find someone that no one knows, in this world of social networking and Facebook."

She had read an article on unattended funerals and the questions played on her mind for months after. "These people - is it a choice that they make, to know no one and be cut off from the world? Or is it that once you start to slip between the cracks it's difficult to come back up again?"

I like exploring the minutiae of things, things that aren't necessarily newsworthy," she says.

Why are most Americans so utterly willing to have an essential part of their hearts sliced away and discarded like so much waste?

Surely all this happiness can't be for real. How can so many people be happy in the midst of all the problems that beset our globe — not only the collective and apocalyptic ills but also those particular irritations that bedevil our everyday existences, those money issues and marital spats, those stifling vocations and lonely dawns?

Doctors offer a wide array of drugs that might eradicate depression forever. It seems truly an age of almost perfect contentment, a brave new world of persistent good fortune, joy without trouble, felicity with no penalty.

Don't we fear that this rabid focus on exuberance leads to half-lives, to bland existences, to wastelands of mechanistic behavior?

This brand of supposed joy, moreover, seems to foster an ignorance of life's enduring and vital polarity between agony and ecstasy, dejection and ebullience.

I had seen a picture of a woman banging her head on the wall and was crying for her dead man!

I had seen the pictures of the advancing army, the erupting buildings due to the bomb blast, the bewildered children and of the lonely senior citizens…

I had seen pictures and more pictures of agony, bitterness, utter disbelief and absolute madness!

Why so much of hurt all around the world?

When this violence and the destruction contributed by the mad terrorists, the mad neighborhood and the mad countries shall come to an end?

How can someone hurt the other people? How can any one hurt the others?

What kind of a psychological make up that is and why?

Why we shall have to look at pictures after pictures of blood, ruthlessness, hurts and violence day after day?

Is this the fault of the genes, the fault of the society, and the fault of the government or that of the great God?

What is the answer and where is the answer?

How to resolve this and when to resolve this?

A lonely life can lead to developing Alzheimer’s in the later stages of life, according to a Swedish study. Widowed, divorced and never remarried people are more at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

The study reveals that fifty per cent of the people who have lived alone in their 40’s and 50’s were likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease in their later years. The persons who were not middle aged when their life partner died and had lived their entire life all alone has six times more risk of developing the Alzheimer’s disease than the married ones. While the people who lived alone for their entire adulthood faced twice the risk of developing the disease, it was thrice the risk in people who were divorced in their middle ages.

Strangers talk to one another here, people who'd never strike up a conversation when touring London or Rome. It's one of those clues that tell you this Mekong River town in northern Laos is an outpost. The atmosphere is part "Star Wars" bar, part "Casablanca." Backpackers descend from the surrounding mountains or step ashore off slow boats, clutching tattered Lonely Planet guides. Europeans, Australians, Thais and a few Americans wing in on prop planes. Members of ethnic hill tribes, particularly the Hmong, appear at sunset, spreading their wares along the street. And everywhere you turn there are Buddhist monks in blazing-orange robes.

A town of 26,000, Luang Prabang is shaped like a tongue, formed by the Nam Khan River as it curves to meet the Mekong.

Luang Prabang's architecture catapulted it onto the World Heritage list in 1995. The sublime mix of old Laotian wooden houses, half-timbered buildings, stalwart French structures and ancient Buddhist temples can be found nowhere else

Chocolate's bitter sweet relationship with the rainforest

(CNN) -- "I think that in 20 years chocolate will be like caviar," says John Mason, executive director and founder of the Ghana-based Nature Conservation Research Council (NCRC).

The problem is that cocoa is naturally a rainforest plant that grows in shady conditions surrounded by a high biodiversity, but recently hybrid varieties have been grown on cleared land as mono-cultures and in full sun.

While this will give higher short term yields, the soil quickly becomes degraded and the lifespan of plants can be cut from 75 or 100 years, to 30 or less. When the trees die and the land is exhausted the farmers must move on and clear more rainforest to plant cocoa.

"Sometimes I feel like a lonely voice, and more people need to engage with these problems, soon. Otherwise, I fear my grandchildren may only ever know the taste of artificial chocolate."
