10 Years Later, Shepard Case Haunts Reporters

Weekend Edition Sunday, October 12, 2008 · On the night of Oct. 6, 1998, Matthew Shepard, a gay college student at the University of Wyoming, ran into locals Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson at a bar in Laramie, Wyo.

The men decided to rob Shepard. They drove him to the edge of town, tied him to a wooden fence and struck him 18 times in the head with a .357-caliber Magnum handgun before leaving him to die. He was found the next day and died in the hospital on Oct. 12.

Vote to Decide on Lethal Meds for Dying Patients

The emotionally charged battle over end-of-life decisions has taken to the airwaves as Washington state voters decide whether to allow doctors to prescribe lethal medication to terminally ill patients.

Recent TV and radio ads by opponents feature actor Martin Sheen, who calls the measure a "dangerous idea" that could be used by the most vulnerable in society. Supporters are on TV with an ad spotlighting a widow who says it lets those who are suffering have control over their final days.

The measure would allow physicians in Washington state to help terminally ill patients end their lives. Oregon, where voters first approved the idea in 1994, is the only state with such a law.

"It really is a matter of personal decisions and having the freedom to make your own decisions about end-of-life care," said Anne Martens, spokeswoman for Yes on I-1000.

The measure is strongly opposed by religious groups, and Catholic church officials said their opposition shouldn't surprise anyone.

The typewriter symbolized the golden age of writing in the last century. It not only helped produce great literature, but often became part of the story itself.

Redolent of Parisian garrets on the left bank of the Seine, with writers like Joyce, Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald, the humble typewriter helped produce great literature. Invented in the 19th Century, it dominated the writing scene of the last century, but was made obsolete by the advent of word processors and computers.

Man-eating catfish discovered in India

The monster fish is called a goonch and can grow to six foot, regularly weighing more than 11 stone.

It lives in the Great Kali River, between India and Nepal - a stretch of water which is often used to dispose of human bodies after Hindu funeral rites.

Some think this may have lead the goonch to start poaching live human victims.

"There will be a few freak individuals that grow bigger than the other ones and if you throw in extra food, they will grow even bigger."

Mr Wade managed to snare one goonch which weighed 161lb and was nearly 6ft long - the biggest of its species ever caught.

He said: "If that got hold of you, there would be no getting away."

The goonch is thought to be responsible for the disappearance of an 18-year-old Nepali last year, who was dragged under the water by a creature described as a "elongated pig".

Two earlier mysterious river deaths are also considered to be the work of the killer fish.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The California panel that oversees the Golden Gate Bridge voted on Friday to install netting to catch would-be suicides throwing themselves off the famous span.

The 4,200-foot-long (1,280-meter-long) suspension bridge, which crosses the entrance to San Francisco Bay, is a tourist magnet that also draws people trying to end their lives.

There were 39 confirmed suicides from the bridge in 2007, with seven unconfirmed cases, and 19 confirmed so far this year, bridge officials said.

The netting would be set 20 feet below the sidewalk and extend out 20 feet from the bridge. Officials estimate the barrier will cost $40 million to $50 million.

A suicide barrier beneath the link between San Francisco and Marin County has been debated since the 1970s, said Mary Currie, a spokesperson for the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District.

Building the barrier will take several years, and the project needs additional environmental study, she said.

A bug which lives entirely on its own and survives without oxygen in complete darkness underground has been discovered in South Africa.

Desulforudis audaxviator, or bold traveller as it is known in English, relies on water, hydrogen and sulphate for its energy.

Because it gets by without oxygen, it could offer clues as to whether life exists on other planets.

The loneliest living species known to science was found inside a gold mine.

The rod-shaped bacterium was found 2.8km (1.74 miles) beneath the surface of the Earth in Mponeng's Driefontein mine near Johannesburg, living in complete isolation, total darkness and 60C (140F) heat.

The find represents the first known ecosystem with a single biological species, scientists say.

It was identified in DNA extracted from water-filled cracks in the mine.

Rocking second season- Review

I found second season as rocking, due to major changes brought in the storyline. How beautifully, the creators have changed the basic characters and introduced wonderful twists in their lives. The main attraction of the entire second season was Denise. I must appreciate the writers who transformed her house wife kind of image into a young girl in love with spontaneity. She behaves in this season like; a bird has just got out of cage and is anxious to fly for the first time.

Chicago Sheriff Won't Evict in Home Foreclosures

CHICAGO — The sheriff here said Wednesday that he's ordering his deputies to stop evicting people from foreclosed properties because many people his office has helped throw out on the street are renters who did nothing wrong.

"We will no longer be a party to something that's so unjust," a visibly angry Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said at a news conference.

"We have to be sure that when we are doing this — and we are destroying some people's lives — we better be darned sure we're talking about the right people," Dart said.

Dart said he believes he's the first sheriff in a major metropolitan area to stop participating in foreclosure evictions, and the publisher of a national foreclosure database said he's probably right.

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — The Latin class at Isaac E. Young Middle School here was reading a story the other day with a familiar ring: Boy annoys girl, girl scolds boy. Only in this version, the characters were named Sextus and Cornelia, and they argued in Latin.

“I can relate, but what the heck are they saying?” said Xavier Peña, a sixth grader who started studying Latin in September.

Enrollment in Latin classes here in this Westchester County suburb has increased by nearly one-third since 2006, to 187 of the district’s 10,500 students, and the two middle schools in town are starting an ancient-cultures club in which students will explore the lives of Romans, Greeks and others.
