Shapiro has spent much of his life trying to explain his adopted home to the West, first by translating Chinese literature into English, then by writing books of his own. In 1963, he traded his US passport for a Chinese one. Twenty years later he became a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, a prestigious body that makes recommendations to the Party leadership. He is not the only foreign-born member of the CPPCC, but he is the only one to have had a bar mitzvah (which took place when Calvin Coolidge was the American president).

The literature is rife with examples of doctors making money, sometimes discreetly or even under the table, from the treatment recommendations they make.

I do not believe a doctor would knowingly recommend a treatment that would harm you just to make money. But, I do believe there are times when, all else being almost equal, the first consideration would be money, followed by your success or with little regard to the expense to you.

we need to find someone who can help us consider the evidence much more objectively. That means we either have to find someone who can help us with all the options, or — even preferably — someone who won’t handle any of the options.

If you are in a position to need difficult, invasive or long term treatment, make sure you get at least a second opinion. Then find someone who either can provide you with ALL the choices, or someone who doesn’t have a stake in ANY of the choices to help you get more objective advice before you make your final decision.

"The study at least suggests that the marriage is a place where women can exert some power," said lead author David Vogel, a psychologist at Iowa State University (ISU). "Whether or not it's because of changing societal roles, we don't know.”

Wives were more demanding—asking for changes in the relationship or in their partner—and were more likely to get their way than the husbands. This held regardless of who had chosen the issue.

Wife power could signal a harmonious couple. "There's been research that suggests that's a marker of a healthy marriage—that men accept influence from their wives," Murphy said.

The results counter past research.

“Most of the research literature in psychology has suggested that women have less power,” Vogel told LiveScience. “They have largely based that on the fact that traditionally men earn more money and so therefore would have the ability to make big decisions in the relationship.” That wasn’t the case in this study.

Three months after Dispatches: Undercover Mosque won a police apology and libel damages, Channel 4 has announced it is returning to the subject in Undercover Mosque: The Return.

The documentary, an undercover investigation into extremism in mainstream British mosques, featured preachers calling for homosexuals to be killed, espousing male supremacy, condemning non-Muslims and predicting jihad.

In one scene, as hundreds of women and some children come to pray, a preacher calls for adulterers, homosexuals, women who act like men and Muslim converts to other faiths to be killed, saying: "Kill him, kill him. You have to kill him, you understand. This is Islam."

The

reporter also "films inside a key Saudi-funded Muslim organisation, which claims to promote tolerance and integration yet distributes literature which promotes intolerance for non-Muslims

Michael Coates, in his piece about call centres, depicts a universe where employees are required to follow procedure, at all costs. That procedure is intended to help customers; but when the employees are presented with a scenario where the best way to solve a problem will be to break with that procedure, it's not the customer's day.

Which is good news for call centre managers, as a generation of youngsters learns that sticking blindly, rigidly to a syllabus or a procedure is the way to success and contentment. WB Yeats said that education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire. From many students today, proudly clutching their A* grades in English literature, the only response will be: "Yeats? Nah, we haven't done him."

Post Modern Romanticism

Romanticism is a complex artistic, literary, and intellectual movement- a reaction against the scientific rationalization of nature, and was embodied most strongly in the visual arts, music, and literature. Most of the images of the movement evoke a sence of awe from nature. Funnily enough, pinup art has a distinct link to these aesthetics and emotions. Only instead of exhibiting an introspective awe, through the allegory of nature, they seem to elevate the woman, depicted in the painting, to the status of goddess, using awesome imagery of nature.

The idea for readme.cc Virtual Library grew - without wanting to sound presumptuous - from the desire to mediate between book culture and Internet culture. The world of literature and e-communities were to be considered on one common plane in order to demonstrate that individualism and the growth of a community have never been incompatible: the intimate experience of reading a book has always been followed by an exchange with other readers.

Since its inception, the aim of the Virtual Library has been to create a playful instrument for conveying information. It aspires to establish a book forum where, whenever they please, readers can give tips for books they believe will also be worth reading in the future.

Bigfoot's body has been found, according to two Georgia men who, with much media fanfare, showed reporters three blurry photos said to depict the creature at a press conference held today at a hotel a few miles from Stanford University

The promised evidence for Bigfoot DNA turned out to be an e-mail from Curt Nelson, a University of Minnesota scientist who analyzed DNA samples provided by the two men. Nelson said one of the samples came from a human, the other from an opossum. The presenters sidestepped the issue by saying that is what their Bigfoot must have recently consumed

photographs of the body, supposedly stored in a freezer, resemble a widely available Halloween costume

So here these men are in Georgia, which is home to the world-renowned Yerkes Primate Center, and what do they do? They turn to a charlatan instead
