Psychologist Daniel Nettle of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in England and his colleagues recruited 425 British men and women through advertisements in a small town newsletter and specialty lists for creative types. The researchers surveyed this group with questions designed to measure various schizophrenic behaviors, artistic output and sexual success, among other aspects of their personal history.

But the finding, published yesterday in the Proceedings of the Royal Society (B), offers some insights into why schizophrenia, which seems to be passed from generation to generation and affects roughly 1 percent of people, does not disappear from the general population. In the study, even non-creative types who revealed an urge to resist conformity had more sexual success. In short, some of the traits associated with the debilitating mental illness can actually increase a person�s desirability. And sometimes produce major works of art as well.

Judge Must Approve Agreement

INDIANAPOLIS -- Public safety officials have struck a deal to end federal oversight of racial and gender diversity within city's police and fire departments.

If approved by a federal judge, Friday's agreement with the U.S. Justice Department still would require the city to report hiring and promotions statistics to the federal government for two years.

Republican Mayor Greg Ballard's administration plans to meet soon with the police and fire unions to discuss changes in promotions and creating regular performance reviews.

Until then, the city will rely on existing promotions lists.

"People have the right to expect that in the police department and fire department, people will be evaluated in their job, that those evaluations will matter, and that the best people will be promoted to positions of supervision," Public Safety Director Scott Newman said.

Filter Forge is a standalone application and plugin for Adobe Photoshop and compatible 8bf plugin hosts that allows users to apply programmable image processing filters and to define them with a visual node-based filter editor. A similar approach is practiced in such applications as Genetica and DarkTree; Filter Forge's salient characteristics include floating point processing, antialiasing, and support for producing bump maps and normal maps (in addition to textures). Filter usage relies on a simple, non-customizable UI with a list of presets and the input controls (sliders, lists, colour pickers...) that have been included in the filter dataflow.

When I first began my study of magick, almost thirty years ago, I was fascinated and bewildered by the numerous, often conflicting, systems for cataloging entities. Every school of thought and every religion offered a pantheon of entities, avatars, teachers, and earthly representatives. There were catalogs filled with icons, pantheons crowded with gods and goddesses, angels organized in hierarchies more complex than government offices, and demons lined up behind their bigger, badder brethren. Even the most ostensibly monotheistic religions still had lists of saints, prophets, teachers, legendary characters, and further subdivisions of their One True, yet nonetheless divisible, God.

clipper's remarks: There is a risk that is run every time you begin to change the fundamentals of how government does its job. There has been such controversy this year with more than 10 police officers indicted, under investigation or that have resigned under a cloud that calls to reform the department are being made from many quarters. I'm not certain now is the time for our city leadership to move to end Federal oversight when the Justice Department is keeping an eye on these agencies, and after so many recent lawsuits in the past few years involving diversity related issues.

Michael Parenti is barely able to scratch the surface as he lists the human vermin that triumphed on the Age of Bush, but he hit a lot of the highlights.

Was the administration a failure?

Not at all. It accomplished just about everything it set out to do.

Worst of all, or best of all depending on what side of the devastation you're on, there's no indication that anything substantial is going to change with the next president.
