Listen long and hard to the talking heads on TV and you'll hear that phrase echoing down through the cable-vision canyons, bouncing off the walls and endlessly repeated by reporters, bloggers, and water-cooler savants: It's the narrative, stupid.

The meaning – and danger – of the narrative was masterfully demonstrated in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. The facts were tossed aside, or else cherry-picked and arranged in such a fashion as to mimic the truth while telling a brazen lie.

Visions of mass death, imprinted on the popular imagination by the events of 9/11, were projected on every surface, and Congress was stampeded by fear – and, for the War Party, a fortuitous episode of anthrax-in-the-mails – into passing the so-called PATRIOT Act

When a good narrative is overused, it becomes counterproductive, and the War Party's story line with a Middle Eastern background is surely getting a little frayed around the edges.

Your will to listen, is the subtle testimony that you leave in the subconscious layers of her mind.

You don’t have to say much – you just have to ask questions that she’d love to answer.

You’re not a listening rock – you’re a listening lake: your whole body is responding, by syncing your nonverbal reactions, to the statements of your counterpart.

You’re saying everything, without saying things vocally.

She can feel that you love to listen - that’s why you'd always get your point across when your time has come.

You’d never give unwanted advice/indirect criticism or direct criticism.

Instead: would you leave ideas in the mind of your counterpart by phrasing them as indirect questions?

Wir haben ja sowieso alle die Nase voll von vorgelesenen Referaten und sinnlos vollgestopften Powerpoint-Folien. Also reduzieren wir den Medieneinsatz auf ein sinnvolles Minimum - dann haben alle Beteiligten mehr davon. Mögliche Vorgaben:

Powerpoint-Präsentation ohne Listen/Aufzählungen (nur mit Bildern, Strukturdiagrammen; keine vollständigen Sätze);
maximal 10 Wörter pro Folie + maximal eine Folie pro 1/2/3 Minute(n);
keine Verwendung von Powerpoint, Entwicklung der Gedanken nur an der Tafel (vor allem bei Kurzreferaten sehr geeignet), alternativ Flipchart o.ä.;
Skript zum Spicken oder Karteikarten entsprechen maximal einer DIN A4-Seite.

Lieber dauert das Referat nur 5 Minuten (statt 20) und ist dafür eingängiger und befriedigender, als ein stundenlanges Wiedergekäue.

clipper's remarks: Suskind's book has provided documentation of evidence and inside witnesses within the CIA and British Intelligence sources that a fake letter was ordered "from the White House" pretending to be from Saddam's Intelligence Chief to Saddam (whom the U.S. relocated and paid $5 million to) which was laden with lies and a claim of ties between Mohammad Atta (supposed 9/11 ringleader), Al Qaeda, and Iraq--back-dated prior to 9/11--which provided deliberately false claims to connect Iraq to 9/11. The White House has denied (see previous clipmark) but award-winning journalist Suskind summarizes his sources and defends his allegations on Democracy Now (see first podcast "listen" link).

The second podcast, Aug. 14, includes House Judiciary Chair John Conyers who has already started an investigation under way which will lead to some kind of action. Conyer's stated the the Senate Intelligence Committee, headed by Jay Rockefeller, has the power to review classified documents to verify this.

When Colorado voters were deciding whether to require that 10 percent of the state's electricity come from renewable fuels, the state's largest utility fought the proposal, warning that any shift from coal and natural gas would be costly, uncertain and unwise.

Then a funny thing happened. The ballot initiative passed, and Xcel energy met the requirement eight years ahead of schedule. And at the government's urging, its executives quickly agreed to double the target, to 20 percent.

"Now is a terrific time for renewables to launch. I hope they get all the capital they need, and all the great minds and talent. But I don't want it to come at the expense of the oil and gas industry," said Meg Collins, president of the Colorado Oil & Gas Association. "As goes Colorado, so goes the West, as far as this energy policy debate."

Pandora: How to Rip and Save Pandoras Music to MP3 Files for Free

You need firefox as well.

1. Go to pandora.com and setup an account.

2. Download and run Pandora's Jar:

3. Click the Extract All Files link to uncompress the files to a directory on your computer. I use c:\pandora
4. Goto the directory that contains your downloaded files (c:\pandora)
5. Double-click on pandora.jar.

6. The file will launch and you will see something like:

Welcome to Pandoras Jar
Attempting to lauch on port 80...OK
[ready, lets grab some MP3'S!!!]

7. Visit http://localhost in firefox
8. Firefox should load with Pandoras Jar version of Pandora
9. As you listen, the mp3s will be created in a directory called mp3 in your original pandoras jar installation directory (c:\pandora\mp3)
