Special Delivery: N.Y. mail carrier catches falling baby

Talk about being in the right place at the right time.

Lisa Harrell was making a special delivery for the U.S. Postal Service when she caught Niales Morales after the 1-year-old fell out of a second-story window at her family's home in Albany, N.Y.

Police say the little girl was on a bed next to the window when she crawled out of the house and into the postal worker's arms.

“I was ringing the bell, ringing the bell when I noticed the upstairs window open. Then I saw the baby. Next thing you know I caught the baby in my arms,” Harrell tells the Daily Gazette.

How did this happen?

"[The mother] was in the room, turned her back," Albany Public Safety spokesman James Miller tells WXXA-TV. "We wouldn't advise any parent to put a bed up against a window of that nature."

ALBANY, New York (AP) -- A postal worker is credited with saving a 1-year-old girl's life by catching her after the baby fell out of a second-story window in Albany, New York.

Lisa Harrell was delivering mail to a home late Monday morning when she noticed a baby in a window above the front door. Harrell says the next thing she knew, the baby had fallen into her arms.

When the baby's mother realized what had happened, she ran outside and grabbed the girl from Harrell. The woman thanked Harrell and then ran down the street to her mother's house.

Paramedics checked the baby at the scene but found no injuries.

No charges are being filed against the mother, who says she had placed her daughter on a bed that was up against the window. The mother said her back was turned when her daughter crawled out the open window. E-mail to a friend

Plaintiffs in the lawsuit condemned the ruling.

"I think history will hold them in contempt," plaintiff Lisa Polyak said of the judges. "To create a legal solution in a vacuum, that doesn't recognize that the constitution is there to support the people, is to create an ignorant and irrelevant solution."

State Sen. Richard Madaleno, who is openly gay, said he plans to introduce a bill to allow same-sex marriage. He also expects a proposal to create civil unions.

"I think we'll have a lengthy discussion next session about what the options are for legal recognition for gay people," Madaleno said.

When will these conservatives ever realize that we in no way threaten their pathetic little marriages or their warped religion of hatred.

Court Upholds Md. Gay Marriage Ban

BALTIMORE (AP) — Maryland's highest court on Tuesday upheld a state law defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman, ending a lawsuit filed by same-sex couples who claimed they were being denied equal protection under the law.

Maryland's 1973 ban on gay marriage does not discriminate on the basis of gender and does not deny any fundamental rights, the Court of Appeals ruled in a 4-3 decision. It also said the state has a legitimate interest in promoting opposite-sex marriage.

"Our opinion should by no means be read to imply that the General Assembly may not grant and recognize for homosexual persons civil unions or the right to marry a person of the same sex," Judge Glenn T. Harrell Jr. wrote for the majority.

Legislators on both sides of the debate predicted action on the issue in the next session.
