Last time when we published such a list on Linux Desktop; we received a lot of flak for showing mockups and not actually showing how the themes can be replicated by users. Anyone can go to gnome-look and go through thousands of available theme, but we have decided to make a list of ten themes that we thought are a cut above the others, with a link to download and you can try them yourself. Feel free to share your favorite Linux Desktop theme on the comment.

2009 is a bold release which brings the new KDE 4.1 as the default desktop, along with a re-designed installer and Mandriva Control Center and many other new features. Other significant updates include GNOME 2.24, OpenOffice.org 3, Mozilla Firefox 3, and kernel 2.6.27. Key features include new graphical in-line upgrade capability, netbook compatibility, class-leading hardware support, and support for working with mobile devices.

On September 23 VMware released the much awaited Workstation 6.5 (which includes Player 2.5 and ACE 2.5 products).

With Unity any program running inside a Windows or Linux guest OS can be seen as part of the underlying host OS (Windows only).

Kiosk mode (disable any access to the host OS)

detection of (some) malicious keystroke loggers inside the guest OS

Virtual machine streaming (a VM can be downloaded from a Web Server and run immediately)

Integration with VMware Converter 3.0.3

Support for accelerated 3D graphics on Windows XP guest OS (only when DirectX 9 physical GPUs are available)

Integrated Virtual Debugger for Microsoft Visual Studio (an application running inside the guest OS can be recorded through the Record/Replay feature and the replay can be debugged at a later time)

Microsoft, Linux & TCO

Microsoft admits that TCO for education students in developing nations is about the same with their products and Free Software. They further admit that the initial TCO costs of hardware and software are lower with Linux, and that Linux technical people in developing nations command a higher salary than their Microsoft counterparts due to scarcity.

Microsoft recently released a study on "Total Cost of Ownership" (TCO) for schools installing large numbers of computers in developing nations.

This latest study, done by a company called "Vital Wave Consulting" (published August 15, 2008, and funded by Microsoft, then posted in Microsoft's "Unlimited Potential" (UP) Blog)

Microsoft thought so much of this report that in the blog written by James Utzschneider, General Manager of Marketing and Communications for Microsoft's "Unlimited Potential" program, he acknowledged that the initial cost of the Microsoft software and hardware was "slightly higher" than that of Linux and Free Software.

Next find the cheapest processor that uses the same socket.

You're looking for a board that supports the latest processor, the latest video card standard, latest hard drive technology etc. But you're not looking for the latest model of this board.

Buy two steps down fromt he top in terms of hard drive sizes

one or two steps down from the top in terms of Video card.

What you end up with is a very capable system that costs a lot less than today's state of the art, but that may have been state of the art a year or so ago.

for some applications (photoshop comes to mind) nothing improves performance like a killer fast Hard Drive. Except those are killer expensive. The on-the-cheap solution is to buy VERY FAST but cheap hard drives and set them up for RAID 0 (striping).
