The rationale behind torture is that pain will make the guilty confess, but a new study by researchers at Harvard University finds that the pain of torture can make even the innocent seem guilty.

Participants in the study met a woman suspected of cheating to win money. The woman was then "tortured" by having her hand immersed in ice water while study participants listened to the session over an intercom. She never confessed to anything, but the more she suffered during the torture, the guiltier she was perceived to be.

"Those who feel complicit with the torture have a need to justify the torture, and so link the victim's pain to blame," says Gray. "On the other hand, those distant from torture have no need to justify it and so can sympathize with the suffering of the victim, linking pain to innocence."

"Those who initially advocate torture see those harmed as guilty, unlike those who initially reject torture and its methods."

That’s why the scientific consensus established in the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change refers to ‘change’ and not ‘warming.’ I’m happy to be a ‘changer,’ and not a ‘warmer,’ nor a denier who was bought and paid for by the energy companies who bankroll groups you cite like the Heartland Institute, which also happily took money from the tobacco industry to prove that cigarettes don’t make people sick. Monsanto and the FDA refuse to acknowledge research directly linking elevated levels of IGF-1 to increased risk of breast and prostate cancer. To make matters worse, Monsanto and the FDA colluded in '93 and '94 to block labeling requirements for rBGH milk (even today Monsanto and the FDA block labeling of genetically engineered food). So, the average dairy consumer has no idea that they are increasing their own risk of getting cancer.

I am thinking that journalism needs more of a scrubbing – a good clean-up, more about getting to journalist ethics. A report, co-authored by a former executive editor for the Washington Post, doesn’t go there.

Len Downie, in a report commissioned by the Columbia University Journalist School, wants “nonprofits” (philanthropists) to step in and help financially, as well as lobby for government tax codes granting nonprofit status – and how about that suggested fee for telecom and internet users?

What about feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, getting children who need medical assistance to the right hospital, donating to DARE and diabetes, the Ronald McDonald House, AIDs, various adult cancers and heart associations and our local church and missions? Where do these elitists get the brass to ask nonprofits to siphon off monies given by the “givers” in America?

Did I mention there is a tax in this plan?

Is there anything left in life that isn't linked in some way to cancer?

Not hot tea apparently. An international group of scientists has now connected it with esophageal cancer. The problem doesn't appear to be the tea itself, but the temperature at which it is consumed, their study found.

Residents of Golestan province in northern Iran have one of the highest rates of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in the world. They don't drink alcohol or smoke -- the two primary risk factors for the disease in the West -- but they do consume tea. Lots of it. Nearly 1.2 liters per day, on average. So local researchers set out looking for a connection.

The study didn't assess the mechanism linking hot tea to esophageal cancer, but the researchers said the temperature of the liquid was almost certainly to blame rather than the compounds in the tea itself.
