For 94 years Lillian Asplund refused to speak about the tragedy that claimed the lives of her father and three brothers.

Instead, the spinster kept the final moments of her family locked in her memory and the poignant possessions of her father Carl hidden in a shoebox in her bureau.

It was only after her death aged 99 the box was found along with the collection of Titanic-related items that, pieced together, tell the tragic story of the family's demise.

"She never married and the tragedy must have left a huge emotional scar on her.

Barbara West Dainton, believed to be one of the last two survivors from the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, has died in England at age 96.

Dainton died Oct. 16 at a nursing home in Camborne, England, according to Peter Visick, a distant relative. Her funeral was held Monday at Truro Cathedral, Visick said Thursday.

Elizabeth Gladys "Millvina" Dean of Southampton, England, who was 2 months old at the time of the Titanic sinking, is now the disaster's only remaining survivor, according to the Titanic Historical Society.

The last American survivor, Lillian Gertrud Asplund, died in Massachusetts last year at age 99.

Dainton returned to England after the accident. She married in 1952.

She avoided publicity associated with the Titanic and even insisted that her funeral take place before any public announcement of her death, Kamuda said.

"We respected her privacy," Kamuda said. "We're so open with everything and our emotions nowadays, but people at that time, they just didn't talk about it."

Barbara West Dainton, believed to have been one of the last two survivors from the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, died Oct. 16 in Camborne, England. She was 96.

Elizabeth Gladys Dean of Southampton, England, known as Millvina, who was 2 months old at the time the Titanic sank, is now the only remaining survivor, according to the Titanic Historical Society. The last American survivor, Lillian Gertrud Asplund, died in Massachusetts last year at the age of 99.

Ms. Dainton, born in Bournemouth, in southern England, in 1911, was too young to remember the night when the huge liner hit an iceberg and sank in the Atlantic on April 14 and 15, 1912, killing 1,500 people, including her father, Edwy Arthur West.

Titanic's Last American Survivor, 99, Dies

BOSTON - Lillian Gertrud Asplund, the last American survivor of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, has died, a funeral home said Sunday. She was 99.

Asplund, who was just 5 years old, lost her father and three brothers — including a fraternal twin — when the "practically unsinkable" ship went down in the North Atlantic after hitting an iceberg.

At least two other survivors are living, but they were too young to have memories of the disaster. Barbara Joyce West Dainton of Truro, England, was 10 months old and Elizabeth Gladys "Millvina" Dean of Southampton, England, was 2 months old.
