Butterfly Totems

Butterfly spends the first part of its life crawling the earth, before metamorphosis leads it to spin a home for stasis (known as a cocoon). After transforming, Butterfly is reborn as various beautiful colored winged creatures of the air.

This insect is extremely sensitive to the Harmony of Earth, and is the first creature to leave a damaged ecology. Butterfly's graceful dancing-like appearance on flowers reminds us to find the joy in nature and make it a part of our life.

Butterfly enters our life as a messenger for change. If it comes to us hurt or ill, Butterfly asks us to stop keeping our joy at bay. It may take some time being alone with ourselves to listen to Butterfly's gentle requests that we allow the natural transformation of things in our lives.

Carbon specks push back origins of life

Tiny traces of carbon trapped inside the oldest diamonds ever found, suggest life started on Earth 700 million years earlier than previously thought, say Australian researchers.

Dr Alexander Nemchin and colleagues from Curtin University's Department of Applied Geology in Western Australia report their findings in this week's issue of Nature.

The team analysed carbon isotopes trapped inside the 4.2-billion year old diamonds that formed inside zircon crystals discovered last year in the Jack Hills region of Western Australian.

Associate Professor Ian Fitzsimons, who heads the department that Nemchin and colleagues belong to, says the ratio of carbon isotopes provides clues on whether the carbon came from a life form.

"When plants take in carbon from the atmosphere they much prefer carbon-12 and don't like carbon-13," says Fitzsimons.

"So the carbon in the plants has a different ratio and anything that eats the plants inherits that ratio."

Working on Green Day, Time of Your Life Guitar Song

Working on the song Time of Your Life by Green Day. Actually i have been practicing this one for awhile now. It's not to hard of a song because most of the chord changes are pretty easy. I still play it a little slower than the original version but i'm sure in time i'll get up to speed. If you can learn to play this one then it's almost the same for the song Every Rose Has its Thorn by Poison. Even a beginner like me can learn these two fairly well.

The only theory that can really make sense of these needless imperfections is Darwin's theory of natural selection, which holds that humans (and all other life forms) evolve through a blind process known as descent-with-modification, in which new life forms represent random modifications of earlier life forms -- with no central overseer to guide the process. Such a random process can, over time, lead populations of creatures to become more adapted to their environment, but it is also vulnerable to getting stuck, in the sort of good-enough-but-not-perfect solutions that mathematicians call local maxima.

Lost amid all the recent discussions of intelligent design -- including Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal's decision this past Friday to sign a bill that allows teachers in his state to "supplement" classes on evolution with talk of creationism -- is one simple basic fact.
