It isn't surprising that the conventional wisdom is that the news media have turned on Sen. John McCain.

decades of attacks from conservatives have conditioned reporters to believe that they are biased against Republicans -- even when there is scant evidence in the reporting to support such claims.

the McCain campaign has launched an all-out assault on the media, complaining relentlessly about the coverage its candidate has gotten.

The truth is that when John McCain says "jump," the media still ask, "How high?" Think about this: When was the last time McCain or his campaign has wanted the news media to focus on something, and they have refused?

Just as it wouldn't be inappropriate to raise questions about McCain's association with G. Gordon Liddy, the convicted Watergate burglar whose colorful history includes telling listeners to his radio show in 1994 to shoot federal agents in the head. When McCain went on Liddy's radio show in November 2007, he told Liddy, "I'm proud of you, I'm proud of your family... It's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great."

McCain's Chilling Dance With the Dark Side

So the McCain camp is trying to raise doubts about Barack Obama -- even though the Illinois senator has been on the national stage for four years and has been under the presidential campaign microscope for the last 20 months. They seem to have no qualms appealing to the cultural fears of their agitated, and now energized, base by practically branding Obama as un-American or anti-American. And this is eliciting an ugliness at McCain-Palin events that is justifiably raising alarms that some nut job is going to act on the Republican ticket's cynical campaigning.

For two days now, there have been stories about boisterous McCain-Palin supporters screaming inflammatory words at the very mention of Obama's name. Words like "terrorist" and "Kill him!" and "treason." And at no point has McCain or Palin called on those folks and others who would imitate them to stop.

If they keep doing what they're doing, they'll deserve to lose.

clipper's remarks: If McCain wants to bash Obama for his occasional appearances on the same board with Ayers, a 1970's political activist who Obama disclaims friendship with, then he needs to examine his admitted long-time friendship to a government operative who was in the thick of the biggest political scandal in American history - and one of the greatest threats to the rule of law, G. Gordon Liddy.

Both Ayers and Liddy say they have no regrets for what they did. Both served prison terms for their actions.

Liddy, a radio talk show host, gives the advice: "if the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms comes to disarm you, resist them with arms. Go for a head shot, they're going to be wearing bulletproof vests. Kill the sons of bitches."

Ayers, since imprisonment, has spent his time helping the poor and disadvantaged.

McCain thinks Obama should apologize for associating with a criminal extremist. To which Obama might reply: After you.

Can a presidential candidate justify a long and friendly relationship with someone who, back in the 1970s, extolled violence and committed crimes in the name of a radical ideology -- and who has never shown remorse or admitted error? When the candidate in question is Barack Obama, John McCain says no. But when the candidate in question is John McCain, he's not so sure.

Obama has been justly criticized for his ties to former Weather Underground member Bill Ayers, who in 1995 hosted a campaign event for Obama and in 2001 gave him a $200 contribution.

McCain minced no words: "I think not only a repudiation but an apology for ever having anything to do with an unrepentant terrorist is due the American people."

What McCain didn't mention is that he has his own Bill Ayers -- in the form of G. Gordon Liddy.

Far from repudiating him, McCain has embraced him.

The Fuhrer was G Gordon Liddy's first political hero. Liddy was a sickly, asthmatic child when he grew up in Hoboken, New Jersey, in the 1930s. The town was full of ethnic Germans who idolized Hitler. Liddy was made to salute the Stars and Stripes Nazi-style by the nuns at his school; even now, he admits, "at assemblies where the national anthem is played, I must suppress the urge to snap out my right arm.

When he listened to Hitler on the radio, it "made me feel a strength inside I had never known before," he explains. "Hitler's sheer animal confidence and power of will [entranced me]. He sent an electric current through my body."

Given Liddy's record, it's hard to see why McCain would touch him with a 10-foot pole. On the contrary, he should be returning his donations and shunning his show. Yet the senator shows no qualms about associating with Liddy -- or celebrating his service to their common cause.

How does McCain explain his howling hypocrisy on the subject? He doesn't. I made repeated inquiries to his campaign aides, which they refused to acknowledge, much less answer. On this topic, the pilot of the Straight Talk Express would rather stay parked in the garage.

That's an odd policy for someone who is so forthright about his rival's responsibility. McCain thinks Obama should apologize for associating with a criminal extremist. To which Obama might reply: After you.

The ones that inspired him to plan the murder (never carried out) of an unfriendly newspaper columnist

Liddy was in the thick of the biggest political scandal in American history -- and one of the greatest threats to the rule of law. He has said he has no regrets about what he did

All this may sound like ancient history. But it's from the same era as the bombings Ayers helped carry out as a member of the Weather Underground. And Liddy's penchant for extreme solutions has not abated

Here is what AIG is putting on the block: the U.S. life, retirement and pensions businesses, the personal-lines property-casualty business and at least a minority stake in its foreign life insurance business. All of AIG’s non-insurance businesses, including aircraft leasing, consumer finance division, U.S. auto insurance, a reinsurance business and asset manager, are also likely to be put on the block.

Nearly every major private equity firm with an interest in finance, including Hellman & Friedman, TPG and Corsair Capital, are expected to pore very closely over AIG’s portfolio. AIG CEO Edward Liddy knows that this has been the sale that many have been waiting for. On a conference call today, he said “dozens and dozens” of acquirers would step up and that “demand for these properties will be very high.”

AIG will sell nearly its entire life insurance business, which includes its life insurance operations in the U.S., Latin America and Japan, but will keep a controlling stake in AIA, its life insurance division in China, India, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. The company expects earnings growth of around 20% in those developing markets.

(Reuters) - American International Group Inc's (AIG.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) former Chief Executive Robert Willumstad has rejected a $22 million severance payment, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a person familiar with the decision.

Willumstad e-mailed his successor, Edward Liddy, of his decision to forego the severance since he was not able to execute the restructuring plan he had developed, the paper said.

AIG's Willumstad May Get $7 Million After Three Months as CEO

Sept. 17 (Bloomberg) -- American International Group Inc. head Robert Willumstad, named chief executive officer in June amid record losses from the housing slump, may get a $7 million exit package after a Federal Reserve takeover forces him out.

Willumstad, 63, is entitled to keep a $4 million cash bonus, 1 million shares, six months' severance salary and life insurance and other benefits worth about $40,000, said David Schmidt, a senior consultant at New York-based executive pay firm James F. Reda & Associates.

``To most people, that would seem to be a lot of money, given he was only there a few months,'' Schmidt said in an interview. ``I'm sure when they negotiated this contract they never thought he'd only be there three months.''

She warned that state-led climate legislation unfairly burdened the South and would lead to “another Civil War here in a short period of time”:

So yet again, the South has to pay on its back the cost of using coal in this country to the northern states. We’re going to have another Civil War here in a short period of time, because the cost is going to go up. So the Southeast has not bought into this because they understand that they’re going to have to pay a very high price. Maryland has decided to sort of stay out of it because they have coal, as is Pennsylvania. They don’t necessarily want to pay Yankee taxes, right?

I like this little town too, lotsa hippies, little old professor types and little ol' ladies in tennis shoes walkin' the neighborhood which is very quiet and crime freeeee! NO Wal-Mart (but a few yuppie coffee bars), Oregon State University, real nice library, community pool, ballfields, farmers market, food co-op. 50 miles to the ocean, where we'll go next weekend.

It's really a JOY to be back with Matt and the grandkids, Kamolluck, Daughter-in-law, too, she's a great comfort.... At 5, Aelfie is talkin' like he's already in school and Kaelli is always huggin' and smiling at me and tells me she loves me every day...what a joyous little charmer...my special li'l girl...

anyway, it's such a relief to have that military vibe of Fairbanks outta my head...my apt. building was becoming a hip-hop soldier's ghetto...
