Here's the big news: Sarah Palin has mainstreamed the political wink! She's not just a winker, she's a twinkler. And a champion smile-talker. She would flash that same smile even if she were telling you that she'd just burned down your house. What other expressions can she do? Libby Copeland had a great line in her deconstruction of Palin's expressiveness: "Palin is all emoticons."

A gaffe-free night for Biden is like Lucy letting Charlie Brown kick the football: We didn't think we'd ever see it.

One moment jumped out: After Biden choked up, talking about not knowing if a child would make it, Palin didn't react at all -- as if she weren't even listening to him. Warm-and-fuzzy Palin seemed suddenly rather Arctic.

I also wondered about Palin's comment on the constitutional role of the vice president. In common practice, as I understand it, the vice president doesn't go anywhere near the Senate except to break a tie vote on an important bill. Here's what Palin said:

Wait, did you see that? There! She did it again: wrinkled up her nose in a way that either looks like a sneer or is adorably reminiscent of Samantha from "Bewitched." Depending on whom you talk to.

Next time you see a clip of the Republican vice presidential nominee, try this exercise. Mute your TV and just watch that face. How often do you see someone in political life so extravagantly expressive? The eyebrows go up, the shoulder leans in, the thumb jauntily gestures backward, the tongue actually fixes in the cheek. To mock Barack Obama, she licks her finger and holds it to the imaginary wind! And that smile, that nearly ever-present smile, which either indicates -- oh, dear, here we go again -- that she's sarcastic and dismissive or that she's letting you in on a very clever joke.

clipper's remarks: Among their findings were an estimated 130 new species of soft corals, several undescribed shrimp-like species - some with claws larger than their bodies - and dozens of tiny crustaceans. They also collected around 100 small organisms called isopods that are believed to be new to science. Some isopods are parasites and burrow into fishes' mouths and nibble their tongues away.

The expeditions, which are part of a four-year effort to build up a detailed picture of marine life around the sites, will feed into a global census that will release its first report in 2010.

Sometimes, the irony is so overwhelming, I have to wonder if it’s some kind of satirical performance art, and I’m just not in on the joke. Consider this fascinating exchange between Bill O’Reilly and Karl Rove on Fox News last night:

There are two key angles to this. First, the NYT article did, in fact, identify the CIA interrogator who questioned Khalid Shaikh Mohammed. The article characterizes him as one of the good guys, gaining information through non-abusive means. Indeed, the interrogator, who refused training on how to waterboard a detainee, established a rapport with the terrorist — which “astonished his fellow C.I.A. officers” — by talking and bringing KSM food. The article, in other words, wasn’t a slam job.

But for Karl Rove to have the chutzpah to lambaste the Times for this is extraordinary.

WASHINGTON — A House committee issued a subpoena Monday for FBI reports from interviews with President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney in the CIA leak investigation.

The subpoena to Attorney General Michael Mukasey from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is the latest move by Congress to shed light on Cheney's precise role in the leak of Valerie Plame's CIA identity.

On Friday, former White House press secretary Scott McClellan is scheduled to testify to the House Judiciary Committee.

He is expected to talk about White House higher-ups directing him to publicly deny that Cheney's chief of staff and White House political adviser Karl Rove played any role in leaking the CIA employment of Plame, who is married to Bush administration war critic Joseph Wilson.

John McCain’s Chilling Project for America

John McCain has long been a major player in a radical militaristic group driven by an ideology of global expansionism and dominance attained through perpetual, pre-emptive, unilateral, multiple wars. The credo of this group is “the end justifies the means,” and the end of establishing the United States as the world’s sole superpower justifies, in its estimation, anything from military control over the information on the Internet to the use of genocidal biological weapons. Over its two terms, the George W. Bush administration has planted the seeds for this geopolitical master plan, and now appears to be counting on the McCain administration, if one comes to power, to nurture it.
