Snow Leopard Update Blocks Intel Atom, Kills Hackintoshes

Mac OS X Leopard 10.6.2 will break your hackintosh. The forthcoming OS update will not run on the Intel Atom processor, a rather petty move from Apple which, if true, will break many netbooks which have been hacked to run as more than passable Macs.

This news comes from Stellarola, the hacker who helped us out extensively with the original (and still the best) Gadget Lab hackintosh. Here’s what he has to say:

In the current developer build of 10.6.2, Apple appears to have changed around a lot of CPU related information. One of the effects of this is Apple killing off Intel’s Atom chip.

The important word there is “current”. The latest seed could change before being released as an actual update. But Stella knows what he’s talking about (he’s one of the guys behind the OSx86 method for easily installing the Mac OS on non-Apple machines), and recommends keeping your frankenmacs loaded with 10.6.1 for now.

After spending a few weeks with both new operating systems and exposing each to my geek's gauntlet of everyday tasks -- e-mail, instant messaging, Web surfing, blogging, creating and editing Office documents, Web page creation, and audio, video, and photo editing -- I have to call Snow Leopard the winner. All considered, from starting up to backing up, Mac OS X still offers the best overall user experience. The competition was close, though -- far closer than it's been in quite a while.

(Newser) – The leader of the free world may have been masquerading as a frumpy suburban dad and handing out dried fruit, but it was still a pretty cool treat for a couple thousand DC-area kids who went trick-or-treating at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave last night. With the first lady dressed as a leopard, President and Michelle Obama handed out White House M&Ms, White House-shaped sugar cookies, and the aforementioned dessicated fruit.

A brass band in skeleton costumes pumped out gypsy music as makeup artists from a Chicago theater company painted faces and a Rhode Island farmer showed off his 1300-pound pumpkin, reports the Washington Post. Some 2,600 schoolkids chosen at random happily passed through the White House gates, but, professed one 9-year-old: "I'm not a fan of dried fruit."

To reverse the changes, you just need to change the last word of the command and run it again. If the last word is YES, change it to NO, change 1 to 0, and change TRUE to FALSE and vice versa for all.

1. Folder previews in Quick Look

This is my favourite hidden feature in Snow Leopard. When enabled, using Quick Look (hit the space bar) on a folder will show you a preview of the folder's contents inside a translucent folder icon. The previews of the files inside the folder also cycle through so you can see all of them. Just use the following command:

defaults write com.apple.finder QLEnableXRayFolders 1

You will need to restart the Finder, either by typing killall Finder into the Terminal or by Control-Option-clicking on the Finder in the Dock and choosing Relaunch.

For those who are new to Terminal Commands, here's a quick run down of how to use them. Don't worry, it's really easy. Start by opening up Terminal, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. In the window that appears, paste in one of the lines provided below, and then hit return. For the changes to take effect, you need to restart the application concerned. For applications like the Dock or Finder, it is easiest to just type killall Dock or killall Finder into the Terminal to restart them.

Man tries to smuggle 14 snakes and 10 lizards

Customs officers in Norway were amazed to find 14 royal pythons and 10 albino leopard geckos taped to a man's body.

The 22-year-old Norwegian was stopped in a routine check by Kristiansand customs after arriving on a ferry from Denmark, the Faedrelandsvennen newspaper reported.

After finding a tarantula in the man's bag, customs officials decided to give him a full body search that revealed 14 stockings - one for each snake - taped around his torso.

Reptile smuggling is not uncommon in Norway but Helge Breilid, the office manager at Kristiansand customs, said customs officers had been "horrified" by the case.

"Customs officers quickly realised the man was smuggling animals, because his whole body was in constant motion," Mr Breilid said.

When the man dropped his pants, the officers found 10 cans taped to his legs, each containing a lizard, he said.

OSLO, Norway - A man has been arrested for trying to smuggle two dozen snakes and geckos by duct taping them to his body.

Customs agent Helge Breilid said Monday the 22-year-old Norwegian citizen was apprehended in the southern town of Kristiansand after getting off a ferry from Hirtshals, Denmark.

He said the man had 14 royal pythons and 10 albino leopard geckos under his clothes.

Breilid said the non-venomous snakes - the smallest species in the python family - were hidden in stockings duct-taped to the man's abdomen.

The geckos were in boxes taped to his thighs.

Customs officials found the reptiles, which are not endangered, Sunday during a search following the discovery of a tarantula in one of the man's bags.

Tom Leppard, more widely known as Leopard Man
was thinking of becoming a monk
but decided to become a hermit instead.

He was formerly considered by the Guinness Book of World Records
to be the world’s most tattooed man after spending £5,500
to have his body covered in leopard-like spots.

He moved to Scottish island of Skye in 1987 where he
lived alone in small hut which he made from beach combed materials.
With no electricity or creature comforts, he would canoe three miles
when he needed to get food and supplies.

In 2008, at the age of 73, he came to the decision
that it was time to take things easier and once again joined civilization.
