The Carlsbad, Calif., City Council approves a plan for a 254-room Lego-themed hotel outside the park entrance. The California Coastal Commission also must approve the proposal.

Only two months after announcing plans to add a water attraction at the theme park in Carlsbad, Calif., Legoland has won approval from the city of Carlsbad to build a Lego-themed hotel on the property.

The Carlsbad City Council approved a plan last week to build a 254-room hotel outside the entrance to the park. The plan must also win approval from the California Coastal Commission, which regulates construction along the state's coast.

A final price tag and a construction timeline are pending approval by the commission, said Julie Estrada, a spokeswoman for Legoland.

But she said the hotel would adopt the Lego theme throughout the building, including Lego-designed carpeting and wallpaper.

"You'll feel like you are staying in Legoland," she said of the hotel.

It's remarkably easy to hack LEDs into Lego minifigures to make awesome, creepy, and tiny decorations for Halloween.

In what seems like a miraculous coincidence, a standard LED fits exactly into the head of a Lego minifigure. It's that easy: grab an LED and a head, slip it in, and it fits perfectly.

The modern Lego minifigure dates to 1975-8. Since LEDs were already coming in 5 mm packages (also called T 1 3/4 packages) by the mid 1970's, it's clear that Lego minifigures were made to fit LEDs in their heads. It's a sign from above: The little yellow guys are simply meant to have light-up noggins. Who are we to argue with fate?

At our Halloween party last year the best costumes were definitely Bloody Mary and the Boy-with-pencils-stabbed-into-his-head-and-body (also extremely bloody). They were the kids of a frugal and creative friend of mine, who proudly made the costumes herself, spending very little and putting the rest of our store-bought outfits to shame. I admit that I love surfing the web (months in advance, like an obsessed woman) for Halloween costumes, but when I think about how much I actually spend for these costumes to be used once or twice (or more if you get the younger siblings to re-use), it really isn’t funny.
