Washington Post Ombudsman Andrew Alexander acknowledges that his newspaper doesn’t give enough credit to conservative media.

“Fox News, joined by right-leaning talk radio and bloggers, often hypes stories to apocalyptic proportions while casting competitors as too liberal or too lazy to report the truth,” he wrote in the paper Sunday.

“But they're also occasionally pumping legitimate stories. I thought that was the case with ACORN and, before it, the Fox-fueled controversy that led to the resignation of White House environmental adviser Van Jones.”

Alexander points out that “Jones had issued two public apologies before The Post finally wrote about him. … Conservatives had attacked Jones for more than a week before the first Post story appeared Sept. 5. He resigned the next day.”

So why was the establishment paper so slow?

In the 501-page tome " to be released later this month " Frank is described by people who know him well as a masterful legislator, an impatient boss, and “socially handicapped.”

One of the most riveting parts of the book is Frank’s recollection of his ethics scandal, when he paid a male prostitute for sex. Various media outlets called for Frank to resign, but he persevered by admitting his mistakes and asking the ethics committee to investigate him in 1989. Many Republicans, including then-Rep. Larry Craig (Idaho), called for serious sanctions against Frank, who was ultimately reprimanded by the House, 408-18. (California Democratic Reps. Nancy Pelosi and Henry Waxman both voted against the measure.)

Rep. Barney Frank is interested in capping his political career as a member of the president’s Cabinet, according to a new biography of the Financial Services Committee chairman.

Frank (D-Mass.) told author Stuart Weisberg that he would like to be Housing and Urban Development secretary. However, the 69-year-old lawmaker stresses that his departure from Congress is not imminent.

He first wants to pass more legislation on affordable housing, saying, “I want at least two years with President Obama and a solidly Democratic Senate so that we can get the federal government back in the housing business.”

No president has ever appointed an openly gay man or woman to the Cabinet.

Weisberg, who used to work for Frank on Capitol Hill, spent five years on his authoritative book, titled "Barney Frank, The Story of America’s Only Left-handed, Gay, Jewish Congressman". He interviewed over 150 people, including compiling 30 hours of interviews with Frank.

Twenty years ago this Tuesday, Distefano, then a hanging-on major leaguer, served as a left-handed catcher in a major league baseball game. No one has done so since. Like Ladies Night and pitchers named Wilbur, left-handed catchers are effectively extinct — for reasons on which there is bizarrely little consensus.

In the last 100 years, Dale Long caught two innings for the Chicago Cubs in 1958, Mike Squires the same for the 1980 White Sox.

And since Aug. 18, 1989, when Distefano caught for the last time, baseball has embraced retro uniforms and even revenue sharing — but not the likes of Distefano. The minor leagues do not have one left-handed catcher right now.

As he gets older – and I say this with the caveat that he has yet to hit nine months old – it’s looking increasingly like my son has inherited a trait of mine that won’t exactly do him any favors in life. It’s one I got from my dad, and that two-thirds of my immediate family have. (Those of you shouting “a funny looking nose,” please pipe down.) I’m left-handed, and it looks like he will be too. Apparently you can’t tell for sure until a child is about a year old – in some cases 3 to 6 years old – but for some kids there’s a definite left hand bias from the very start.

Seeing as today is International Left-Handers’ Day, I felt it was my duty as a lefty geek, and possibly the father of a lefty, to keep you informed about the uh… condition.

Anderson and Williams's research began by studying laterality in flamingoes: whether they show any preference over which side of their bodies they use for various tasks, just as a human may be right or left-handed.

It was once thought to be the devil's hand, but today lefthanders are uniting to show the rest of the population what makes them special.

Today is International Lefthanders Day, and righthanders worldwide are being encouraged to go leftie so they can get an idea of just how many products are designed without much thought for the remaining 15 per cent of the population.

Scissors, shovels, fridges, golf clubs, mouses for computers, and doors all favour right-handers.

International Lefthanders Day has been celebrated annually since 1976, when it was first declared by Lefthanders International.

It stems from the fact that not too long ago being lefthanded was thought to be "abnormal" and something that should be fixed.

But studies have found that on average, left-handed people are more likely to be intelligent, creative and homosexual.

Steve McGuirk, who runs and owns Lefty's Lefthanded products in Blacktown in Sydney, says living left in a righthanded world is hard.

Is your cat a righty or a lefty? The question's not as kooky as it sounds. A new study reveals that domestic cats are right- or left-handed, just like us.

Psychologists at Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland gave cats small jars with bits of tuna tucked inside. They found that female cats tend to be righties, while the boy cats fell to the left. The gender divide was clear: Among 21 lady kitties, 20 nabbed the fish with their right paws. On the flip side, 20 of 21 males proved left-handed. One nimble-fingered male turned out to be ambidextrous, reports New Scientist magazine.

Hormone levels might be responsible for the difference between the sexes, the researchers say. Other studies have linked testosterone to left-handedness in people; men are more likely to be left-handed than women, notes the Daily Mail. Similar gender differences have also shown up in dogs and horses.

In a stunning turn of events, the New York Yankees are reportedly "very close" to signing highly sought-after left-handed pitcher Barack Obama to a multi-year contract.

Said one of the scouts, "He has all the tools to eventually become a top-of-the-rotation starter. He has a nice changeup that he likes to throw low in the strike zone—that's his money pitch."

Despite questions about his ability to pitch deep into games—both of his previous outings mysteriously lasted only one pitch—Obama sounded confident that he can turn the Yankees' rotation around.

"I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors," said Obama in a recent statement in Washington, D.C.

No word yet on whether George W. Bush has received any offers, however.
