Russia to Cut Oil Supplies to Europe In Response to Sanctions

Russia’s government may prompt at least one oil company to cut supplies of crude oil to Europe in response to the threats to impose sanctions in the wake of the conflict with Georgia.

It is rumored that supplies via Druzhba pipeline that meets oil requirements of Poland and Germany will be probably reduced and that the LUKOIL leadership has been given the notice.

The reduction might happen already starting from September 1, the sources speculate. People in LUKOIL, however, say they know nothing about the plans to cut down supplies, and people in the Kremlin declined to comment.

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner declared yesterday that the EU was deliberating whether to impose sanctions on Russia in the wake of events in South Ossetia and Georgia.

The results of a recent election held for one of Hamas's key decision-making bodies are likely to hinder efforts to free kidnapped IDF soldier St.-Sgt Gilad Schalit, sources in the Gaza Strip told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.

The secret ballot was held about 10 days ago for the Shura (Consultative) Council, which is made up of Hamas's senior political and religious leadership and is tasked with discussing all important issues.

The names of the Shura Council members are kept secret, although it is believed that some of them are based in a number of Arab countries.

The sources told the Post the vote resulted in a major victory for representatives of the "young guard" in Hamas, most of whom are affiliated with the movement's armed wing, Izzadin Kassam.

Moscow's decision to recognize Georgia's breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia has made it clear that the current Russian leadership places no great value on ties with the West. That, at least, seems to be the tenor of the response by world leaders to Tuesday's announcement by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Still, despite the harsh words, there seems little the West can do to confront a confrontational Moscow.

Medvedev said on Tuesday that Georgia had forced Russia's hand by trying to reassert control over the two regions, both of which had run their own affairs since wars with Tbilisi in the early 1990s. Georgian troops launched an attack on South Ossetia on Aug. 7 but were quickly forced out of the region by a huge Russian counter-attack which then pushed deep into Georgia proper.

MOSCOW, August 25 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's upper house of parliament voted unanimously on Monday for a resolution calling on President Dmitry Medvedev to recognize the independence of Georgia's two breakaway regions.

Senators said that after Georgia's act of military aggression against South Ossetia, which also reignited the conflict with Abkhazia, Georgia has lost the moral right to seek control of the breakaway provinces.

The offensive "definitively deprived the Georgian leadership of the right to push for the South Ossetian and Abkhazian peoples' dependence on their adventurist polices, which have led to a humanitarian catastrophe," the address to the president said.

"In view of the repeated requests from South Ossetia and Abkhazia to recognize their independence, including those made on August 22 and 24, the Federation Council proposes that Russia support their independence,"

The lower house of parliament, the State Duma, is expected to approve a similar resolution later on Monday.
