The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn't change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care.

Under the bill, headed for a D.C. Council vote next month, religious organizations would not be required to perform or make space available for same-sex weddings. But they would have to obey city laws prohibiting discrimination against gay men and lesbians.

Fearful that they could be forced, among other things, to extend employee benefits to same-sex married couples, church officials said they would have no choice but to abandon their contracts with the city.

Several D.C. Council members said the Catholic Church is trying to erode the city's long-standing laws protecting gay men and lesbians from discrimination.

Former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer will give a lecture Thursday afternoon at Harvard University's ethics center, raising a few questions over what the prostitute-visiting ex-official has to say on the topic.

The engagement drew an objection from the former madam whose escort service provided Spitzer with high-end hookers.

According to The New York Post, Kristin Davis, who reportedly repeatedly supplied Spitzer with an escort, wrote a protest letter to the Edmond J. Safra Foundation Center for Ethics calling Spitzer a "man without ethics."

"I am greatly intrigued as to what Mr. Spitzer could contribute to an ethical discussion when as Chief Executive Law Enforcement Officer of NY he broke numerous laws for which he has yet to be punished," she wrote, according to the newspaper. "As Attorney General he went around arresting and making examples out of the same escort agencies he was frequenting."

clipper's remarks: Perhaps what’s likely to occur, writes the Chron, is a court-martial under Article 2 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, to punish offenses allegedly committed by a man wearing a U.S. military uniform against other military personnel on a military base. The Army’s Criminal Investigation Division is responsible for recommending charges, prompting the military equivalent of a grand jury, known as an Article 32 hearing, where both prosecutors and defense can present evidence.

Those results would be reviewed by the base commander, who would decide whether to convene a court-martial. The 12-person jury would be composed of officers higher in rank than Hasan " lieutenant colonels and above.

The future indeed looks grim for Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the accused Fort Hood gunman, who last week opened fire in a processing center on the base, killing 13. Hasan was injured by gunfire, but remains alive and under heavy guard at Fort Sam Houston. That means, of course, Hasan will presumably be prosecuted for his actions.

But what will the legal proceedings look like for Hasan? The Houston Chronicle attempts to answer the question in a story out Monday.

A key question concerning Hasan’s fate hinges on whether civilian prosecutors conclude he was part of a terrorist plot that might justify moving his case into the federal criminal courts under U.S. anti-terrorism laws. If prosecutors, on the other hand, determine that Hasan acted alone, he could face the death penalty in a military court-martial.

Discrimination is one of the greatest evils to have ever beset mankind. Use of terminology such as "mankind" is sexist, and constitutes hate speech.

Hva er verst?

I forrige nummer av Morgenbladet argumenterte jeg for at politikken på cannabisfeltet er feilslått, og at vi bør vurdere legalisering. Den nye lederen i justiskomiteen, Per Sandberg fra Fremskrittspartiet, sier:

– Skulle vi legalisere mord også, fordi det er så mange av dem?

Jeg smilte litt, men tenkte så: Han er tross alt leder av justiskomiteen. Han bør svare på hvordan han bedømmer alvoret i ulike lovovertredelser.

Per Sandberg er selv straffedømt for vold. Ifølge dommen skallet han ned en mann og ga ham flere knyttneveslag i ansiktet.

Mange studier viser at folk flest har forståelse for kriminalitet som utøves av dem selv og personer de kjenner, og nøler med å kreve høye strafferammer. Kanskje har Sandberg hatt lite kontakt med folk som røyker hasj. På den annen side bør en justispolitiker kunne reflektere mer allment over slike saksforhold

(a) vold mot en asylsøker, (b) bruk og besittelse av cannabis? Hvilke straffereaksjoner er rimelige?

hundreds of years ago in the medival times you would often see wrong does getting pelted with fruit and veg in the stocks but today nomore if the laws iss broken by some wrongdoer then they should be put in the stocks and be pelted with rotten fruit, veg and eggs until they have sefrved the punishment instead of 10 hours of comunnity srvice it should be 5 or 6 hours in the stock this would teach people that it is wrong to break the law and guite frankly its just a bit of fun really for the rest of us so this is why i urge you to bring back the stocks because i think we all no pelting people qwith fruit is the way forward into the future.

Muslim jurists consider citizenship (or visa) to be a covenant (aqd) held between the citizen (or visa holder) and the state, one which guarantees safe passage/security (amaan) in exchange for certain obligations (such as obeying the laws of the land); covenants are considered sacredly binding in Islam. The Quran commands:

An Indian team game, Kabaddi calls itself a cross between tag and wrestling.

Two teams of 12 (seven playing, five in reserve) face each other on a court just over half the size of a basketball court. One team sends a raider into the opponents territory, who must not draw breath whilst he is there (laws dictate the raider must constantly chant 'Kabaddi,' thus eliminating any "hey, I saw you breathe!", "No, my mouth is closed!", "You breathed through your nose, I saw you!" arguments).

The raider' job is to 'tag' his opponents and get out without being caught. Tagged opponents are out, but if the raider is wrestled to the ground until he draws breath, then he is out the game. Traditional garb for teams is socks and boxer shorts, or sometimes briefs.

No one quite knows when Kabaddi started, though Indians claim they have concrete evidence the game was played 4,000 years ago, presumably in the form of primitive drawings of men chasing each other in their underpants.

Lower IQs Measured in Spanked Children

Children who are spanked have lower IQs worldwide, according to new research.

An investigator for the study acknowledged that at least part of this effect is due not to spanking itself, but to socioeconomic status: wealthier families both spank less and manage to raise higher-IQ children, though the first doesn’t necessarily cause the second.

Nonetheless, the researcher, the University of New Hampshire’s Murray Straus, said at least part of the explanation for the findings is that the stress of corporal punishment affects brain function. This stress eventually produces fearful, easily startled children, Straus said; these factors in turn are associated with lower IQ, the most widespread measure of general intelligence.

Straus is calling for laws against spanking. Twenty-four nations have already passed such laws

Please tell me why you would oppose the following provision in the heath care reform bill:

1. Creates a government-run plan, or "public option," to offer insurance coverage to compete with private sector insurance companies.

2. Sets up health insurance "exchanges," or marketplaces, where consumers can easily compare coverage and rates.

3. Ends blanket exemption for insurers from anti-trust laws.

4. Provides federal financial help for lower and middle income consumers so they can obtain coverage.

5. Bars insurers from denying or limiting coverage because of pre-existing conditions.

6. Bars insurers from imposing lifetime limits on coverage.

7. Expands Medicaid coverage to more people.

How are these provisions anything but beneficial to The Average Working American Family?

Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy's was always saying, "all children deserve a loving, permanent home". I do agree but it always seemed to me that Dave did not care about the children beyond that. It is like he never gave thought to the children becoming adults and being curious about their origins or possibly needing to know birth family medical history. Now that Dave is deceased his Foundation seems to be continuing on just as he. I found Dave to be pathetic and the same goes for his Foundation. Please don't take me as a person that does not think it important for children in foster care to be placed in homes. I strongly believe in it. But why can't those with money like Dave's Foundation be helpful with trying to get state laws changed so these children as adults will have access to their original birth certificate?
