Beer

The newest bad kid on the block, beer has long been overshadowed by its healthier alcoholic cousins. While no one's suggesting you switch that glass of antioxidant-rich Pinot Noir for a tall glass of lager-there's still that beer gut to worry about-new research has suggested that moderate beer intake can actually improve cardiovascular function. Now if only a scientist will discover the health benefits of ballpark franks and chicken wings. Heaven.

Kevins's Beer Battered Fish(I copied directly)

ngredients:
1 bottle beer- I used a light lager
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 large egg (lightly beaten)
1 pound cod fillets (or halibut, or haddock, etc., cut into serving sized pieces)
salt and pepper to taste
1/2 cup flour

oil for frying

Directions:
1. Mix the beer, flour, baking powder, salt and egg into a batter in a bowl.
2. Season the fish with salt and pepper.
3. Dredge the fish in the flour and shake off any excess.
4. Dip the fish into the batter.

5. Fry the fish in preheated 375F oil until cooked, about 4-5 minutes.

For chips , we prefer oven chips. I pre-cook the potatoes for about 7 minutes and slice it is wedges. Drizzle with olive oil and your favorite seasoning and bake in a hot oven (200C) until brown and crispy

Den grandiosen Bildern von Barack Obamas Europa- und Nahosttour hatte das gegnerische Lager eine Woche lang nur wenig entgegenzusetzen: Beinahe genüsslich zeigten in den USA TV- Sender den republikanischen Kandidaten John McCain in der Käsetheke eines Supermarkts, als der schwarze Senator in Berlin 200.000 Menschen begeisterte. Während der Demokrat mit dem Hubschrauber telegen über Bagdad flog, sich mit Spitzenpolitikern in Kabul, Amman, Tel Aviv, Paris und London traf, zuckelte sein Rivale bieder an der Seite von George Bush senior im Golfwägelchen umher.

US-Medien meldeten "Verzweiflung" aus dem Republikaner-Lager über Obamas medienwirksamen Trip, und die Gegenwehr ließ nicht lange auf sich warten: Als "kriecherisch" beschimpft McCain-Sprecher Tucker Bounds plötzlich die Deutschen. In den Blogs der amerikanischen Zeitungen wird es auf einmal heftig: "Deutsche lieben es, Faschisten zuzujubeln (...) Heil BO (Barack Obama)", schreibt da jemand im Forum des "San Francisco Chronicle".

Bitter and muddy, thick with creamy foam, too meaty for the heat but a blessed lubricant for a foggy night and a tearful chorus of "Carrickfergus," Guinness is Ireland's best-selling beer. Sixtysomethings like McCutcheon and Winter, weaned on its thick roasted-barley essence as teenagers, wouldn't even consider drinking a wispy lager in its place.

Even as sales have boomed elsewhere, Guinness has seen its business decline in Ireland over most of the last seven years, a trend that eased only slightly last year with a growth rate of 3.5%

After he was warned he was at-risk for bowel cancer, Neil King of Essex England took action. No, he didn't add fruits and vegetables to his diet, and there's no mention of a regular exercise routine. Instead, he started eating baked beans, six cans a day to be exact.

He eats them with rice at lunch and with a potato for dinner. The "diet" has helped him lose 140 pounds. There's nothing special about beans though, except for the fact that they are low in fat and high in fiber. His weight loss likely came from dropping his daily eight pints of lager and meals that included sausage and bacon.

Though no one would ever recommend a diet with such restrictions, some weight loss experts do say that in the beginning stages of weight loss, dieters do better when they limit their choices. The fact that he gave himself so few options may be what helped King take the weight off.
