Dozens of UN peacekeepers punished for abuses

The United Nations says at least 50 peacekeepers have been punished by national authorities in the last three years for committing sexual abuses while on UN missions.

The data, released Thursday, comes after repeated requests from media for the punishments meted out to peacekeepers accused of rape and other abuses in conflict areas such as Congo, Haiti, Sudan and Ivory Coast.

The UN said the punishments ranged from reduction in military rank to eight months imprisonment.

No data on the nationalities or identities of the peacekeepers were revealed.

The UK arm of the human rights charity Save the Children released a report in 2008 that found more than 50 per cent of 250 boys and girls living in towns in Haiti, Sudan and the Ivory Coast said they knew of at least one incident of coerced sex and sexual touching involving boys and girls in their communities.

Occasionally the peace prize has gone to actual peace negotiators but usually, per Teddy Roosevelt, when there was nothing left to negotiate. Carlos Saavedra Lamas got his in 1936 for mediating between Bolivia and Paraguay in the Chaco War (1932-35). Both nations were exhausted, 100,000 soldiers were dead, and the Chaco was--as it had been and remains--a vast, useless weed patch. Likewise, Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan (1976) and John Hume and David Trimble (1998)--the four of them were standing around when, after 500 years, the fool residents of my ancestral homeland ran out of ammo and beer.

Of course, if you go around giving prizes left and right (mostly left) for more than a century, you're bound to give some to worthy people once in a while. With the Nobel committee this usually involves the Red Cross (1901, 1917, 1944, 1963). But the Red Cross doesn't bring peace . . .

Nobel left most of his huge fortune to an endowment that funds the prizes named after himself. Beginning in 1901 five Nobels have been awarded pretty much annually. They are given for chemistry, physics, medicine, literature "of an ideal tendency," and peace. Since 1969 there's been a sixth prize, for economics--to no good effect, judging by my 401(k). I don't know enough about chemistry, physics, medicine, or literature of an ideal tendency to say whether these prizes have done harm. But the peace prize stinks.

Theodore Roosevelt got the 1906 prize for ending the Russo-Japanese War after it was over. Never mind his role in starting the Spanish-American War, an altogether less worthwhile conflict. We conquered Puerto Rico! And the 1919 honoree, Woodrow Wilson, gave us America's participation in World War I, and then, with his Versailles Treaty, he gave us everybody's participation in World War II. "Woody's World" is with us right down to the present day in places such as Kosovo.

Depleted Uranium Haunts Kosovo and Iraq

Iraq and Kosovo may be thousands of miles apart, but they share the dubious distinction of contamination with radioactive residue from depleted uranium (DU) bullets used in American air strikes. After several years of silence, US officials finally admitted that 340 tons of DU were fired during the Gulf war. In Kosovo, American delays in providing details of quantities and target points have frustrated international efforts to assess health risks. Despite repeated requests, NATO waited almost a full year after the start of bombing in March 1999 to say that 31,000 DU bullets--a fraction of the number fired in Iraq--were fired by A-10 "tankbuster" aircraft over Kosovo

The high-density bullet is made of low-level radioactive waste left over from manufacturing nuclear fuel and bombs

When DU smashes into a hard target, it pulverizes into breathable dust that remains radioactive for 4.5 billion years.

clipper's remarks: Halfdan Rasmussen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark January 29, 1915. He was a resistance fighter during the German occupation of Denmark in W.W.II and became a well known poet often writing about social issues and human rights. Halfdan Rasmussen was also loved for his nonsense verses written for children. Halfdan Rasmussen almost became a national-poet of Denmark. He died in 87 years old on 2nd March 2002.

In 1979 Amnesty International (Denmark) published a small book with poems about Human Rights (ISBN: 87-980852-2-0). Among the best were a small poem from Halfdan Rasmussen titled "Ikke Bødlen".

The English Translation of Ikke Bødlen:

A few years ago, an Italian journalist from a Florentine newspaper, involved in the Iniziativa contro la tortura, which is the initiative against torture in Northern Italy, sent some lyrics written by a South American man who had been tortured. The English translation (which represents the first stanza of the song) proved to be very moving, and was set to music. The words remained untouched.. Until Kosovo.

The London Times had a piece which told the story of a Serbian soldier who saw an Albanian woman lying wounded in a burned-out building. He left his platoon, went over and helped her, and then joined his men and marched off. There was sense in that image. The rest of the song is about that.

Pair accused of plotting to attack Marines in Quantico, Va.

Two men charged in North Carolina last month with plotting terrorist attacks overseas also planned to strike a Marine Corps base in Quantico, Va., authorities said

The two were among seven suspects arrested in July on accusations that they conspired to provide material support to terrorists and conspired to murder, kidnap, maim and injure people overseas.

The statement offered no details, except to say that Boyd had undertaken reconnaissance of Quantico and obtained maps of the base in order to plan the attack.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said that Boyd also possessed armor-piercing ammunition, and that he had stated that it was "to attack the Americans."

"These additional charges hammer home the grim reality that today's home-grown terrorists are not limiting their violent plans to locations overseas, but instead are willing to set their sights on American citizens and American targets, right here at home,"

Always think before you vote. Your politicians are responsible for the lads deaths as they change the role of the Forces. Initially it was to destroy the Axis of Evil, now it's womens rights????

Who is the unnamed defence minister in press reports who is behind the smearing of General Dannatt? Step forward Kevan Jones.

On one side we have an honourable soldier who has seen action in Belfast, Bosnia and Kosovo, serving his country for the last forty years. On the other we have a graduate of Newcastle Poly who has never had a proper job in his life. A degree in Government & Public Policy helped him to become political and legal officer of the GMB Union, a local councillor and then an MP, where he has distinguished himself only by being one of Brown’s lickspittles. He was one of the signatories of the “Tony Must Go” letter – that saw him eventually rewarded by Gordon with the position of Parliamentary Under Secretary of State and Minister for Veterans at the Ministry of Defence.

Ben Smith notices something new regarding the arrest of terrorist suspects in North Carolina yesterday:

The Bush White House trumpeted every arrest and disrupted plot -- in some cases, ones that were nowhere close to fruition -- as a major win in the War on Terror and a reminder of the need to be vigilant. The Obama administration, by contrast, keeps them relatively quiet. There hasn't been a statement from the White House, or any comment save a Justice Department press release, on the arrest of seven men on charges that they helped raise money and provide training for attacks in Israel, and trained to participate in attacks in Israel and Kosovo.

The decision not to talk about terrorism is just that -- a choice, with the goal of ending the "politics of fear" that Obama denounced during the campaign.

This is a great thing.

One of the men -- Hysen Sherifi from Kosovo -- arrested in the cell is here as a permanent resident, so technically only six of the men are American citizens and therefore traitors.

The ringleader? It seems to be Daniel Boyd. What a surprising name, eh?

Not surprising? That he likes to be called Saifullah.

And don't call his son(?) Dylan. Instead call him Mohammad.

Why does that old country song come to mind? Mamas don't let your babies grow up to be Muhamads!

Truly, Sarah Palin has come a long way. When she ran for vice president, she frequently became disjointed and garbled when she departed from her prepared remarks. Now the prepared remarks are incoherent, too.

Smiling manically, she looked like a parody of the woman who knocked the Republicans dead at their convention. She babbled about her parents’ refrigerator magnet, which apparently had a lot of wise advice. And she recalled her visit with the troops in Kosovo, whose dedication and determination inspired her to ... resign.

The timing of Palin’s announcement was extremely peculiar. Not only did she interrupt the plans of TV newscasters to spend the entire weekend pointing out that Michael Jackson is still dead, she delivered her big news just as the nation was settling into Fourth of July celebrations. You’d have thought she didn’t want us to notice.

The U.S. Air Force has spent an estimated $25 million training combat pilot Lt. Col. Victor Fehrenbach but is about to discharge him involuntarily because he is gay. Born of military-officer parents, Fehrenbach has earned 30 awards and decorations, with tours flying F-15Es in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq, and was one of the elite fighters called on to patrol the air space over Washington, D.C., on Sept. 11, 2001.
