No kissing girls in Ohio

You know you've made it big when others start making covers of your songs. But this remix is a bit different.

It seems that the people at a church in Blacklick, Ohio, aren't too thrilled with Katy Perry's catchy I Kissed A Girl song.

So…..they've decided to change it up a bit.

The Havens Corners Church now has a sign outside with the new lyrics they've added to the song.

It says, "I kissed a girl and I liked it" and adds, "Then I went to hell."

The church pastor, Rev. Dave Allison, says that the sign is intended as "a loving warning to teens" since the Bible states that homosexuality is a sin.

He did admit that the sign has confused some people who don't know the song or get the message.

Guess Katy isn't that big in Ohio.

There is something quite strange for someone bored by details of the privacy of others, to see the media, starting with those "serious", enjoyed with things, which are nothing else than gossip. What is surprising is the implacable march of something incredibly reactionary and normalizer.

It's not only that we know that this one (John Edwards) has cheated on his wife with this one, nor even that we know when and how... It's not only that we know that the daughter of this other one (Sarah Palin) is pregnant before to be married or that her husband was arrested more than 20 years ago for driving under the influence of alcohol... It's not only that there are people to peel biographies, investigate, reveal or create "scandals", and others to buy them, "friends" to be paid for their secrets and bargain their betrayal... in short, a whole system implying

clipper's remarks: I obviously don't know how this will play out, but i would think that to some extent McCain and Palin's direct assault on the media for its treatment of Palin (which seems so unjustified considering the importance of the issue) could actually backfire. Rather than backing off, could this actually instigate the media to do even further digging as a means to justify their behavior?

There is a tendency in the media to kick ourselves, cringe and withdraw, when we are criticized. But I hope my colleagues stand strong in this case: it is important for the public to know that Palin raised taxes as governor, supported the Bridge to Nowhere before she opposed it, pursued pork-barrel projects as mayor, tried to ban books at the local library and thinks the war in Iraq is "a task from God." The attempts by the McCain campaign to bully us into not reporting such things are not only stupidly aggressive, but unprofessional in the extreme.

Is the McCain-Palin Campaign Violating Operational Security?

But, more disturbing, and definitely in violation of security, are an explosion of stories that say specifically where in Iraq Track is deploying to, which have been dutifully eaten up by right wing websites, and reprinted. I will not reprint it here, because I would only be compounding the issue. But, unfortunately, it is very easy to find on the web at this point.

It is simply impossible that any reporter could figure this out on their own. Just by knowing Track's name and the date he is heading to Kuwait, one could not figure out specifically where Track and his company would be going in Iraq. There's a reason it's impossible to figure that out - because the military doesn't want that information out there.

When Sarah Palin was announced as John McCain's Vice Presidential pick, I found it a little disturbing that she told the public that her oldest son, Track, would be deploying to Iraq on September 11. Generally, disclosing the date of deployment is against Operational Security (OPSEC) and illegal.

Calling around to a couple of Public Affairs Officers (PAO) who would be handling the flow of information about Track and his unit, VoteVets.org found out that, first, Track is not deploying on September 11. He may be part of a deployment ceremony that day, before going to Kuwait, though one Public Affairs Officer said that any details of the upcoming ceremony hadn't been made public yet by the military.

Governor Palin may have spilled the beans on that one, while showing she doesn't know the difference between a soldier deploying to Iraq vs. one preparing to deploy to Iraq.

In Denver, the Democrats fashioned an energy plank in a piteous platform embracing failure as a foregone conclusion and caustically cautioning Americans that the time had come to live on less. Declaring outright, “We know we can’t drill our way to more energy independence,” the party of Big Government and small dreams gave up the ghost and gave in those who counsel defeat.

In Minneapolis, the Republicans took a decidedly rosier view of the world of tomorrow. While spouting the now obligatory denunciation of “fossil fuels” (which have helped make America the most advanced civilization in the history of mankind), the GOP nonetheless declared outright, “We must draw more American oil from American soil.” And thereby hangs a tale.

The fact is, Democrats and Republicans alike—at least those that care to be honest with themselves and those around them—know that America can “drill our way to more energy independence.”

If People Paid More Attention This Wouldn't Be An Issue

clipper's remarks: I can feel for the people in this story who were charged large fees for overdrafts of their accounts - but I can only feel so much.

To me, this problem is mainly due to people trying to pass responsibility for themselves and their actions onto someone else.

If you know you're close to being out of money in your account, you should be paying more attention to your balance - you should actually be doing this anyway. If you paid more attention, you'd know how much you had to spend, and wouldn't spend more than that. It's that simple people.

Now I can understand the issue with banks forcing you into overdraft protection and not allowing you to opt out. It should be optional.

But as for the fees themselves - it's an individual's responsibility to understand their accounts, know what they have available to them, and only spent what they have.

Getting upset is just failing to take responsibility for your actions.

You incur overdraft fees when a bank approves a transaction even though you don't have enough money in your account to cover it. The bank is basically charging you a flat fee for a temporary loan - usually between $25 and $35 - regardless of how much the overdraft was. Even a few pennies over your balance are enough to trigger the fees.

College student Miguel Carreon, for example, wrote in to tell us how he recently made eight payments (including charges as small as 99 cents) over the course of one weekend, which left him with overdraft charges totaling $264.

Amber in Raleigh, N.C. wrote in our talkback blog: "When I was 20, I balanced my checkbook wrong. One day I saw that I was $764 negative in my account. $704 of that was all from overdraft fees. $704!!!"

Lynn from Syracuse, N.Y. writes on our blog: "We tried to opt out of this 'convenience' and they would not allow it. That is the fact I find disturbing."

Or she may bomb. I think she'll do ok, but in the end her radical positions like no birth control even for married couples will be her undoing with a broad swath of the electorate. She'll talk middle but she's a George Bush in a skirt, a radical right wing ideologue.

Unlike the shrill pundits on cable news, I don't have a crystal ball. I don't know if Palin will turn out to be an asset to the McCain campaign or a liability or, like so many vice presidential candidates before her, a non-factor. I don't know what kind of leader she might be. But I do know that, on all these fronts, she is a big, big risk if her ticket wins and something bad happens to John McCain. And that the risk isn't just McCain's. Or the Republican Party's. It's all of ours now.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Food and milk from the offspring of cloned animals may have entered the U.S. food supply, the U.S. government said on Tuesday, but it would be impossible to know because there is no difference between cloned and conventional products.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said in January meat and milk from cloned cattle, swine and goats and their offspring were as safe as products from traditional animals. Before then, farmers and ranchers had followed a voluntary moratorium on the sale of clones and their offspring.

While the FDA evaluated the safety of food from clones and their offspring, the U.S. Agriculture Department was in charge of managing the transition of these animals into the food supply.

"It is theoretically possible" offspring from clones are in the food supply, said Siobhan DeLancey, an FDA spokeswoman.

How to properly answer questions

When we as pros answer questions, we must give answers so complete, forthcoming, and informative that the questioner is somewhat taken aback — positively.

The change in the way they look at you. You gave them a real answer with an impeccable explanation, and instead of getting served instant pudding, you gave them filet mignon. Talk about separating yourself from the crowd.

Of course, this requires that you actually know the answers. That’s always the challenge, isn’t it?

Here’s something I left out from that original post. When you’ve built of your ‘account’ with excellent answers, the occasional ‘I don’t know’ tends to add to your credibility. However, this only occurs when the client or prospect has already decided you indeed know what the hell you’re talkin’ about.

Here’s what I learned that day.

If possible, give the short answer at first.

Follow that up with an explanation for that answer.

Ensure that explanation is pure substance, with no guessing on your part.

Give an example if possible, illustrating your explanation.

Allow for chronological context if appropriate.

Finally, ask them if your answer was sufficient.

You’ll be surprised how many times that last one generates very solid follow-up questions. When this happens it’s often an indicator they now have more confidence in your expertise and real world knowledge and experience.

Why?

Because in the end, you can’t fake solid substantive answers to real questions. Especially when they’re from folks who are asking those questions in part to ascertain whether you actually know more than they do.
