Purchase A Kindle 2.0, For How Much?

There is a buzz this coming holiday season folks, the Kindle 2.0 International version has dropped it’s original price. Introduced at $399, now it is available at $259. But why you might ask? I think it has to be it’s popularity. Many people who have purchased the latest Kindle have enjoyed the choice and value the device brings.

Being able to use the Kindle Internationally is a big bonus and have seen the increase in people purchasing it. In Europe the demand has really increased.

The book publishers are in the process of picking a fight with Amazon and other sellers over the pricing of e-books. If the publishers are lucky, they'll lose. Here's why.

Publishers generally sell e-books to Amazon and its competitors for the same price they sell paper books to retailers—about half the list price of the paper version. Amazon and the others insist on selling most e-books for about $9.99, which pleases the publishers when the e-book retail price is close to that of the paper edition: Currently, Amazon is selling the $14 list paperback of The Big Sleep for $10.98 and the electronic Kindle version for $9.99.

Bridgestone Corp announced an electronic paper (e-paper) device based on its "Quick-response Liquid Powder" Oct 26, 2009.

The company expects that the device will be used for browsing electronic books and electronic data. It will be tested with the assistance system for liaison officers at Kansai Urban Banking Corp from the spring of 2010.

A new electronic book reader is expected Tuesday from bookseller Barnes & Noble Inc. that will challenge devices from Amazon.com Inc. and Sony Corp. with a color touch screen and $259 price, according to a planned ad for the device.

The price for the reader, called the Nook, matches that of Amazon's Kindle. The Kindle controls about 60% of the burgeoning e-book market, according to Forrester Research.

Australian Kindle users will have to pay about 40 per cent more than Americans for books on the Amazon e-book readers and the local publishing industry has expressed serious reservations about supporting the gizmo.

International users already have to pay $US20 ($22) more for the device itself, which begins shipping on October 19 for $US279.

And despite promising on its website that there are "no additional charges" for delivering books to overseas users, an Amazon spokesman told The Guardian that the average e-book would cost $US13.99 for foreign customers, 40 per cent more than the American price of $US9.99.

"International customers do pay a higher price for their books than US customers due to higher operating costs outside of the US," the Amazon spokeswoman said.

The Kindle has a six-inch screen and can store up to 1500 books at a time, out of a range of about 200,000 titles that will be available to Australians.

Barnes & Noble E-Reader Could Come Oct. 20 With Lending Options

But B.&N. has been talking to publishers about a new model, whereby users are granted a license to “lend” an e-book to a friend. This could help the bookseller market the device to members of its book clubs program. However, publishers are pushing back on this feature and the two sides are currently engaged in discussions about how many loans a year publishers will allow.

The bookseller also hopes to make e-book lending a centerpiece of its device, according to two people in publishing who asked not to be named because talks were confidential. Readers can not lend digital books on the Kindle, although books can be read on up to six separate devices linked to the same Amazon account.

The comment presumes that a Barnes & Noble e-reading device will have Wi-Fi access built in which, again, would distinguish it from the Kindle, which only accesses 3G cellphone networks.

Australians will finally be able to buy a Kindle – Amazon.com’s electronic ink display that wirelessly downloads and displays books, magazines, newspapers and personal documents – on October 19.

It’s available for pre-order from www.amazon.com/kindle for US$279 (about $314).

The press release says “readers living in or travelling to Kindle’s 3G wireless coverage areas can wirelessly shop at the Kindle Store, download books in less than 60 seconds, automatically receive newspaper and magazine subscriptions, and receive personal documents – all without a PC, Wi-Fi hot spot, or syncing.”
