Wayne County Circuit Judge Robert Ziolkowski ruled the Detroit City Council does not have authority to move forward with proceedings to remove Kilpatrick under the city charter.

Detroit Mayor Charged With Assaulting Officer

DETROIT — Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick’s already debilitating legal troubles compounded here on Friday as Michigan’s attorney general charged him with two felony counts of assaulting police officers.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kilpatrick sat in a county jail serving time for violating a bond agreement on an unrelated charge. He had to be arraigned in the afternoon via video, although he had an earlier court appearance Friday in person.

Mike Cox, the attorney general and a frequent critic of the mayor, accused Mr. Kilpatrick of shoving and shouting expletives at two officers who were trying to serve a subpoena to one of Mr. Kilpatrick’s friends about two weeks ago while Mr. Kilpatrick was in the man’s home.

Despite Kilpatrick's humble apologies to the court, Judge Ronald Giles sent Kilpatrick to Wayne County Jail for failing to notify the court of his trip to Canada and violating the terms of his bond. He also revoked Kilpatrick's bond and suspended all travel.

RICHMOND | Preservationists are expected to announce Tuesday a state and federal initiative to protect more land in the Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, where nearly a third of roughly 50,000 acres of Civil War battlefields are unprotected.

The effort follows the recent announcement by the National Trust for Historic Preservation that a quarry expansion threatens the Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Park battlefield, which is in the valley.

Kathleen S. Kilpatrick, director of Virginia's Department of Historic Resources, said that the announcement will be made at a news conference in Middletown and that the initiative involve a state-federal partnership to preserve additional acres within the core area of the battlefield.

"Broadly speaking, we see any battlefield that is not protected as threatened," she said.

Miss Kilpatrick declined to give further details until the formal announcement, sponsored by the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation.

Elected at age 31 in 2002, Kilpatrick was supposed to bring youthful vitality to his job, and he talked about reform. Now, he’s just another tragedy to befall Detroit, a city whose decline is — as psychologists put it — overdetermined, but stands as a stark statement of the failure of urban liberalism.

Detroit suffers from every possible malady except a plague of locusts, and that’s only because they find urban living uncongenial.

Forbes magazine declared Detroit “America’s Most Miserable City,” on the basis of its unemployment and crime rates, among other things.

The city has lost 1 million residents since 1950.

Detroit compounded them with disastrous governance, personified by Mayor Coleman Young, who held office for 20 years beginning in 1974.

His record raises the question why, if it wanted to engage in a nefarious plot to hurt blacks, the federal government would invent the AIDS virus when it could simply emplace mayors like Coleman Young instead.

Detroit mayor charged with perjury

DETROIT - Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, a one-time rising star and Detroit's youngest elected leader, was charged Monday with perjury and other counts after sexually explicit text messages contradicted his sworn denials of an affair with a top aide.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy also charged the popular yet polarizing 37-year-old mayor with obstruction of justice and misconduct in office.

Kilpatrick's lawyer, Dan Webb, predicted that the mayor would be exonerated on all charges and said he has recommended to the mayor that he not resign.

It's the first major political sex scandal of 2008 (aside from Detroit's Kwame Kilpatrick) and it involves a Democrat. So of course the Associated Press failed to note Gov. Eliot Spitzer's (D-NY) party affiliation. Via the LATimes.com Web site, published at 2:28 p.m. EDT:

Mr. Spitzer, a first term Democrat who pledged to bring ethics reform an end the often seamy ways of Albany, is married with three children.

Update (14:54 EDT): A review of the Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN Web sites shows only Fox noting Spitzer's Democratic party affiliation in teaser headline content appearing on the front page. MSNBC.com and CNN.com also give the Spitzer story prominent play on their Web pages, but his party affiliation is not listed on the front page itself. Screencaps to follow.

Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick was at age 31 the youngest elected Mayor in the history of Detroit, the Motor City. Now, at 38, he is also the Vice President of the National Conference of Democratic Mayors as well as that organization's representative to the Democratic National Committee. He also seems to have a problem with appropriate behavior… then lies about it to try to cover it up. But one thing he doesn't seem to have to worry about is the MSM telling people he's a Democrat!

we get the story in the Detroit Free Press (Here and several other stories), the Associated Press, and the Lansing State Journal (with a report from the Free Press), as well as TV station WDIV's repost of another AP report, and The Detroit News version.

But, not one source so far identifies the Mayor as a Democrat, and a prominent one at that.

If this were a Republican who was a prominent member of a Republican Mayor's Association and a major player in the RNC, would the news be so silent on his party affiliation?

There were 81 Democrats who voted to have an impeachment debate when they were pretty sure it would be tabled, then turned around and voted to prevent a debate when it was clear one might occur. Those opportunists are:

4:31 Update: Looks like the Democrats successfully regrouped after that first vote surprised them. The House just voted 218-194 to send Kucinich’s impeachment resolution to the Judiciary Committee. This effectively kills the bill, preventing a debate on impeachment.

It’s interesting that on such a weighty question as impeaching the vice president of the United States, votes can change so quickly. While the roll calls are not yet available, it seems there were plenty of Democrats who voted to go forward with impeachment when they thought it would fail, who suddenly voted against impeachment when it mattered. I guess it was all just about politics after all — even for the supposed ‘true believers.’

An oral surgeon who temporarily implanted fake boar tusks in his assistant's mouth as a practical joke and got sued for it has gotten the state's high court to back up his gag.

The employee, Tina Alberts, felt so humiliated when she saw the pictures that she quit and sued her boss.

Woo's insurance company, Fireman's Fund, refused to cover the claim, saying the practical joke was intentional and not a normal business activity his insurance policy covered, so Woo settled out of court. He agreed to pay Alberts $250,000, then he sued his insurers.

A King County Superior Court jury sided with Woo, ordering Fireman's Fund to pay him $750,000, plus the out-of-court settlement. The insurance company won the next round, with the state Court of Appeals saying the prank had nothing to do with Woo's practice of dentistry. On Thursday, the state Supreme Court restored Woo's award.

He was delighted with the high court's decision, Kilpatrick said.

NAACP holds symbolic funeral for the N-word

There was no mourning at this funeral. Hundreds of onlookers cheered Monday afternoon as the NAACP put to rest a long-standing expression of racism by holding a public burial for the N-word during its annual convention.

Delegates from across the country marched from downtown Detroit's Cobo Center to Hart Plaza. Two Percheron horses pulled a pine box adorned with a bouquet of fake black roses and a black ribbon printed with a derivation of the word.

The coffin is to be placed at historically black Detroit Memorial Park Cemetery and will have a headstone.

"Today we're not just burying the N-word, we're taking it out of our spirit," said Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. "We gather burying all the things that go with the N-word. We have to bury the 'pimps' and the 'hos' that go with it."

He continued: "Die N-word, and we don't want to see you 'round here no more."
