Speaking of priests, economies started getting out of control once they appeared on the scene. Archeological excavations at sites such as Catal Huyuk in Turkey have unearthed evidence that priests were the first class of people to live entirely off the efforts of everybody else. They managed this feat thanks to advances in horticulture, which meant there was surplus food kicking about. From there it was a mere hop to an economic system based on agriculture, one with numerous new wrinkles built into earlier notions of exchange.

I’ve been kicking this idea around for a few years, and have never really gotten it to settle.

It once occurred to me that buildings could cast a digital shadow.

Imagine an old building still in use, or an old shop location recently renovated

Imagine walking past this place, and, say, the place finds a bluetooth connection on your phone and pings you a message

Which leads to, for example, a history of the building you’re just passing, structured in blog format. Or maybe

a building being used as offices for several start-ups, and they all contribute to a groupblog for the building.

This actually occurred to me on a walk

where lots of old buildings were being re-rented

And I was looking up at one of them and trying to remember what it’d been

And I got to thinking — why aren’t I being pinged a link to the history of this structure?

Can you imagine what a walk

would be like, if almost every building you saw was capable of talking to your internet device?

Ukraine leader dissolves parliament

Yushchenko blamed the collapse of the country's ruling coalition on Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, citing "the dominance of personal interests over national ones."

The country's pro-Western ruling coalition collapsed Sept. 16 after the pro-presidential Our Ukraine bloc withdrew from the alliance.

Earlier, Tymoshenko's bloc joined the opposition Party of Regions, led by Russia-friendly Viktor Yanukovych, to pass legislation substantially cutting presidential powers.

Yushchenko labeled the move a "constitutional coup."

Way back in early July, we made note of a little video aggregation engine called ScrapeUp, an offshoot of VideoSift. It turns out both are still alive and kicking. The news today is that the folks who brought you those services are out with another public beta. It’s name is Dwigger. And while it doesn’t quite roll of the tongue, it is for sure an interesting bit of kit. Twitter feeds plus threaded replies plus voting. It’s Twitter, Diggnified.

Moving quickly past the terrible Diggnified coinage that is mine and mine alone, Dwigger is, in short, both a useful and playful application. How it operates: You can paste a pre-published Twitter message URL and submit it to Dwigger, to be voted and commented on. You can also write a fresh post directly within Dwigger

140 characters long. And if you want to write items exclusive to Dwigger, you may add info as needed.

My obsession with ancient Roman history is still alive and kicking! I simply can't get enough of it... I have bought couple of more books on the subject, including The Fall of the Roman Empire: A New History, a re-visit to one of History's most complex enigma.

Where (the Western) Roman Empire ends, there is another millenium of the Byzanthine Empire for me to get my teeth into!

I discovered these series of free lectures by accident while browsing iTunes. Lars Brownworth's narrative is simply great, well structured and and a joy to listen to.

clipper's remarks: With the DNC news the last ten days and all the clipmarkers I follow, I've been Popping and Commening till my fingers wore out.

This has probably been the most incredible convention in USA America since the radical days and riot at the Democratic convention of 1968 -- when the Vietnam War and recent killings of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King had shattered the nation.

This time the excitement is for a lot more better reasons and the thousands of protesters are at the Republican National Convention, where they belong.

With all the clipping and popping and comments swirling around this I thought that perhaps my web page summary of the DNC might be of some value.

It has video links to all major speeches, all live music performances, a few video tributes, a quick clip of kicking out Fox News, etc. -- all the good stuff.
