In a surprising admission that could become a major scandal in the presidential race, Barack Obama’s 40-page so-called “rebuttal” to Jerome Corsi’s book, The Obama Nation, acknowledges for the first time that the senator once had a personal relationship with identified Communist Party USA (CPUSA) member Frank Marshall Davis, a key high-level operative in a Soviet-sponsored network in Hawaii.

But the 40-page report, advertised and sold to the media as a refutation of Corsi’s “lies,” doesn’t identify Davis as a hard-core communist and it dishonestly edits an article about Davis to eliminate references to his admitted involvement in CPUSA activities and make the black revolutionary writer and “poet” look like a civil rights activist.

In fact, Davis was a secret CPUSA member who continued his involvement in the CPUSA or its front activities into the 1970s, when he became Barack Obama’s mentor in Hawaii.

Russians will relish the apparent victory in what is presented to them as a righteous war. Russia’s leadership will expect many benefits: a compliant state at its southern border, dismembered with the loss of key provinces and disabused of its ambitions to join the EU and NATO; a surge of popular support at home; a bloody thumb in the eyes of those Western leaders who had pushed the expansion of NATO, the independence of Kosovo, missiles on Central European turf and the support for a democratic revolution and an uncompromising leader in Russia’s own backyard; and finally, the sweet irony of playing out a sick parody of recent U.S. international actions and watchwords: from support for “self-determination” and “independence” (as in Kosovo) to “regime change” (as in Iraq) and a “fight against genocide” (as in Darfur), with “unilateralism” and “exceptionalism” as the hallmark of the intervention in Georgia.

Humans have an in-built ability to do mathematics even if they do not have the language to express it, a research team has suggested.

A study in Australian Aboriginal children, whose languages lack number words, found they did just as well as English-speaking children in numeracy.

The findings contradicts other research which found having "counting words" was the key to developing number skills.

They compared those who lived in remote areas and only spoke Warlpiri or Anindilyakawa - two Aboriginal languages with very few number words - with those who lived in Melbourne and spoke English.

The children were asked to "copy" the number of objects the researchers placed on a mat.

"We're born with the ability to see the world numerically just as we're born to see the world in colour."

"This may help explain why children in numerate cultures with developmental dyscalculia find it so difficult to learn arithmetic.

POTI, Georgia (AP) - Russian soldiers took about 20 Georgian troops prisoner at a key Black Sea port in western Georgia on Tuesday, blindfolding them and holding them at gunpoint, and commandeered American Humvees awaiting shipment back to the United States.

The move came as a small column of Russian tanks and armored vehicles left the strategic Georgian city of Gori in the first sign of a Russian pullback of troops from Georgia after a cease-fire intended to end fighting that reignited Cold War tensions. The two countries on Tuesday also exchanged prisoners captured during their brief war.

However, Russian soldiers took Georgian servicemen prisoner in Poti—Georgia's key oil port city—and commandeered the U.S. Humvees.

Russian forces blocked access to the city's naval and commercial ports on Tuesday morning and towed the missile boat Dioskuria, one of the navy's most sophisticated vessels, out of sight of observers. A loud explosion was heard minutes later.

Cyberattackers shut down one Georgian government site and defaced another with images of Adolf Hitler.

Instead, such an assault may be carried out in cyberspace by shadowy hackers half a world away. And Internet security experts believe that it could be just as devastating to the U.S.'s economy and infrastructure as a deadly bombing.

Experts say last week's attack on the former Soviet republic of Georgia, in which a Russian military offensive was preceded by an Internet assault that overwhelmed Georgian government Web sites, signals a new kind of cyberwar, one for which the United States is not fully prepared.

New evidence of the earliest known ritual behaviour

The python-head rock in the Tsodilo Hills, Botswana

Evidence for possibly the earliest known ritual activity has been uncovered in Ngamiland, Botswana. Archæologists investigating the Tsodilo Hills there found a secluded cave, the “Rhino Cave”, next to a rock resembling a python’s head. Hundreds of man-made indentations peppered the rock, known to the San (Bushmen) as the “Rock that Whispers”.

A test pit dug in front of the python simulacrum revealed many stones that had been used to make the indentations. Together with these tools, some of which were over 70,000 years old, more than 13,000 artefacts were unearthed, including burnt spearheads and possible ritual articles. The rock’s natural pythonesque appearance had been enhanced by human carving and grinding – the python is a key figure in San mythology.

Summit targets world water issues

clipper's remarks: The U.S. is sending millions every year to developing countries in food and medical supplies. It seems it would be more beneficial to build wastewater treatment plants to produce water for farming.

Currently 85% of of cities in developing nations discharge water without any treatment and many people are using this water to grow food crops.

The situation is getting worse as more and more people move to urban areas. This creates a higher demand for farmers to produce more food and with clean water becoming more scarce the problem just becomes more compounded.

While global attention has recently focused on energy and food, a global summit this week in Stockholm, Sweden, will tackle the key issue of water.

The World Water Week meeting starts on Sunday and will hear renewed calls to solve growing challenges of sanitation, climate change and drinkable supplies.

The organisers say lack of adequate sanitation is a scandal that costs the lives of 1.4m children every year.

Investing in this area, say scientists, is the most cost effective health intervention the world could make.

While global concerns about energy and food are real, experts say that tackling key water issues is more fundamental to the world and long-term sustained action is needed urgently.

By 2025, 1.8bn people will be living in regions with absolute water scarcity.

Any discussion on water issues will also have to address climate change.
