Artist Builds Temple of Science

At a time when the gulf between religion and science is growing ever greater, an artist has erected a temple for scientific worship.

Jonathon Keats, designer of the petri dish God, built The Atheon to get people thinking about what a scientific religion (or religious science?) would look and feel like.

Keats' conception of that idea took shape as a two-story building complete with stained-glass windows patterned after cosmic microwave background radiation and a liturgy based on the sounds of the Big Bang. The Atheon opened Sept. 27 at the Judah L. Magnes Museum in Berkeley, California.

But, could science replace religion?

The question has intrigued both rationalists frustrated at the persistence of what they see as superstitious dogma, and religious believers — as well as all-purpose skeptics — unwilling to promote science, with its mixed and messy history, to a position of absolute authority.

he just wants to give people a chance to think. In December, he'll host a public discussion at the Atheon, with people invited to bring their own models.

I'm much more attracted to science for its questioning quality, and this overlaps with a respect for mystery in religion

A third of Brits don't know Shakespeare wrote plays - and many of them think he was King of England.

A new survey also reveals 25% didn't realise John Keats was a poet, with some saying his famous Odes were written by Robbie Williams.

Others believed poet Sylvia Plath was lead singer of the Black Eyed Peas. Less than a third knew Winnie the Pooh author A A Milne was a writer.

Our ignorance about our famous authors was revealed in a poll of 3,000 people. It also showed almost two thirds did not know Oscar Wilde wrote The Importance of Being Earnest.

Some 70% have never written a poem to a loved one though two thirds would like to receive one.

Poet laureate Andrew Motion, 55, said: "Although most people accept that poetry has a vital role in personal as well as national life, these findings show a depressing level of ignorance.

"The good news is that 61% said they would like to have poetry play a role in their lives - in which case we hope they might also want to write one."

Isabella mourns the murder of her lover (by her brothers–they want her to find a wealthier suitor) by planting his head in a pot of basil. Hunt has her lover’s hair flowing out a head-sized pot with skull reliefs on it, contemplatively embraced by the longing Isabella. Tragic.

John Keats' "Lamia", written in 1819, is a ballad about a young man from Ancient Greece who unwittingly falls in love with a serpent disguised as a beautiful woman. Lycius, the title character, and Lamia, the serpent, carry on a love affair and are engaged to be married; their relationship, however, is destroyed when a cunning old sage reveals Lamia's true identity, whereupon she returns to her serpent state and Lycius dies of grief. The poem explores Keatsian themes such as the tension between reason and sensation, and the illusory but potentially redemptive quality of poetry and love.

Artist opens first plant porn theater

An American artist has come up with a new form of movie -- pornography for plants featuring uncensored pollination.

Conceptual artist Jonathon Keats said he came to appreciate the impact of entertainment on non-human audiences while choreographing a ballet for honeybees last year, selectively planting flowers among hives to direct the bees' moves.

He filmed a six-minute long video of plants getting pollinated then edited his uncensored footage into a gritty black-and-white porn video. The result was what he claims to be the world's first plant porn movie, "Cinema Botanica."

"It is very boring but that is part of the essence of pornography, that it is very repetitive," he said.
