Files give McCanns new hope in Maddie search

(CNN) -- Madeleine McCann's parents still believe their missing daughter is alive as files from the Portuguese police probe into her disappearance do not reveal any evidence she has been killed, a family spokesman said Tuesday.

Portuguese authorities released almost 30,000 pages of documents from the 15-month investigation on Monday after lifting the period of judicial secrecy in the case.

The three-year-old child vanished in the Algarve region in May last year after being left in the holiday apartment of Kate and Gerry McCann while her parents were having dinner in a restaurant nearby.

Police consider dropping Madeleine McCann inquiry

Portugal's attorney general today confirmed reports he was considering winding down the investigation over missing Madeleine McCann.

Earlier, Portuguese media reports claimed a lack of evidence had forced officers to abandon the inquiry, nearly 14 months after the three-year-old went missing.

The Correio da Manha paper said sources within Portugal's judicial police said they did "not have sufficient evidence to allow formal charges to be brought against the McCanns in the disappearance of their daughter".

Madeleine, from Rothley, Leicestershire, disappeared from the resort of Praia da Luz in the Algarve during a family holiday on May 3 last year.

Detectives later named her parents, Kate, 40, and Gerry McCann, 39, as well as a local man Robert Murat, 34, as formal suspects or "arguidos" in the abduction.

The McCanns remain classified as "arguidos" in the inquiry but have not been charged by authorities.

In the letter, Kate and Gerry thanked the people of Praia da Luz for their initial and ongoing support, as well as their efforts to help in the search to find their daughter, when she went missing one year ago.

The letter spoke of Gerry and Kate’s hope that they will one day find their daughter and that their family can once again be complete.

A SPECIAL service was held to remember Madeleine and all missing children at the Nossa Senhora da Luz church in Praia da Luz at 6.30pm today (Saturday).

The emotional service, in both English and Portuguese, was conducted by the local catholic priest José Manuel Pacheco and resident Anglican Church priest Father Haynes Hubbard.

Yellow and green candles were handed out to the congregation to be lit during the service to serve as a light of hope.

Members of the McCann family, including Gerry McCann’s brother John, who arrived in Portugal earlier this morning, were present at the service and read a letter from Kate and Gerry to the congregation.

After the service, members of the McCann family stood outside the church with members of the congregation around them in a large circle and released yellow and green balloons.

John McCann told The Resident that this evening, members of the family would all be taking part in a private and symbolic lighting of candles.

A private investigator said Madeleine McCann was kidnapped by a pedophile ring and is being held in the Iberian Peninsula or northern Africa, The Daily Mail reported.

Francisco Marco, who was hired by Kate and Gerry McCann to find their daughter, said he knows who kidnapped the 4-year-old and hopes she will be returned to her family by Christmas, the newspaper reported.

Can you have too much information? Yes, I think so. Who of us hasn't had "information overload" at some point in time, but given the choice, I would rather have too much information, than too little. (There is a big difference between information and infotainment too.)
If only the media would apply the same journalistic *zeal and drive for the truth* to other issues such as wars, poverty and stuff like that as well. Would that be too much to ask?

Madeleine is dead: Law chief's cruel outburst

Madeleine McCann was almost certainly killed by any kidnapper because of her parents' intense publicity drive, Portugal's law chief said yesterday.

In a cruel blow to Kate and Gerry, Attorney General Fernando Jose Pinto Monteiro said: "Imagine, would an abductor with all this publicity and with the whole world having Maddy's photo still demand a ransom?

"If she was kidnapped, it's natural that her abductor has already killed her."

"There's a greater possibility of the girl being dead than being alive. If you asked me at this time if I was going to discover anything, I'd have to say 'I don't know'.

Sources say detectives are convinced Kate and Gerry, both 39, accidentally killed three-year-old Madeleine, then disposed of her body.

A FAMILY friend of Kate and Gerry McCann has described for the first time why she is convinced that she saw their daughter Madeleine being abducted shortly before she was reported missing.

Jane Tanner, 36, saw a man carrying a child wearing pink and white pyjamas away from the McCanns’ holiday apartment on the Algarve in Portugal.

The sighting was considered so significant by the McCanns that they commissioned their own artist’s impression, which they released last week.

At the time Tanner attached little significance to the sighting, assuming that Madeleine had recently been checked. She instead returned to the tapas bar where the McCanns and other friends were eating.

Tanner told the police as soon as they arrived about the sighting but details have only now been made public by a friend.

When she was formally interviewed by police at 3am that night, Tanner realised that the pyjamas on the child she had seen were an exact match with Madeleine’s.

The picture shows a light-skinned, blonde-haired girl being carried in a sling on a Moroccan woman’s back near the town of Zinat. It is the fourth reported sighting of a girl fitting Madeleine’s description in Morocco since she disappeared on May 3 but the first published picture.

A Spanish newspaper reported yesterday that another tourist saw a girl resembling Madeleine as she drove through the town of Zaio in northern Morocco at the end of May.

Clarence Mitchell, a spokesman for the McCanns, said last night: “The picture poses serious questions. The child does appear to look like Madeleine. Kate and Gerry are keen to establish what exactly we are seeing here.”

The woman said that Portuguese police were not interested in her report because they assumed that Madeleine was already dead.

Clara Torres, a tourist from Albacete, Spain, who took the picture published last night, said that she had thought immediately of the missing toddler.

A Spanish newspaper reported yesterday that another tourist saw a girl resembling Madeleine as she drove through the town of Zaio in northern Morocco at the end of May.

The woman said that Portuguese police were not interested in her report because they assumed that Madeleine was already dead.

“Although it’s not 100 per cent certain, there’s a strong possibility it could be Madeleine and if it is it could provide a twist to everything that has happened.”

It is expected that it will now be analysed by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection centre using face-mapping technology.

Mrs McCann has always believed that her daughter could have been smuggled to Morocco within hours of her disappearance. The 30-minute ferry crossing from Spain to Tangiers is a five-hour drive from Praia da Luz, where the family were holidaying when Madeleine disappeared.

Holidaymakers travelling across Europe were today urged to look into the distinctive eyes of little Madeleine McCann as her parents stepped up international efforts to find the abducted four-year-old.

Gerry and Kate McCann insisted today they believe their daughter is safe and well. Speaking in Portugal this morning, the couple insisted that until the family saw "concrete evidence to the contrary" they would remain convinced that the four-year-old was being looked after.

Photos of the youngster show her distinctive right eye where the pupil runs into the blue-green iris.

It is this distinguishing mark that her family hope will identify Madeleine to those on the look-out for her across Europe.
