The Supreme Court showed extreme and troubling deference to the views of the military, deciding to lift two restrictions on the Navy’s use of sonar in training exercises off the California coast.

The sonar is used to detect extremely quiet diesel-electric submarines that might threaten a fleet. But the noise is earsplitting — as loud as 2,000 jet engines, according to environmental groups — to acoustically sensitive whales and other marine mammals.

Most disturbing was the majority’s strong statements of deference to the professional judgments of military officers. A district court and appeals court in California had shown much more willingness to probe behind the military’s claims.

the restrictions would impair realistic training that is of the “utmost importance to the Navy and the nation.” Chief Justice Roberts downplayed the likely harm to marine life and said the public interest in military readiness tipped the scales “strongly in favor of the Navy.”

Spirit has been operating on Mars for nearly five years in an exploration mission originally planned to last three months. The recent dust storm is clearing, but a coating of dust on Spirit's solar panels is reducing the rover's ability to generate electricity even when the sky is clear.

JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, manages the Mars Exploration Rover project for the NASA Science Mission Directorate, Washington.

PASADENA, Calif. -- NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit communicated via the Mars Odyssey orbiter today right at the time when ground controllers had told it to, prompting shouts of "She's talking!" among the rover team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.

"This means Spirit has not gone into a fault condition and is still being controlled by sequences we send from the ground," said John Callas of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., project manager for Spirit and its twin, Opportunity.

The solar-powered rover still has low energy, a condition worsened by a dust storm in recent days. Today's communication confirmed that Spirit had received commands sent on Tuesday and that the battery charge had not fallen low enough to trigger a pre-programmed fault mode.

Callas said, "The baby is crying, which means it is healthy enough to communicate normally.

Carr, the author of the piece, illustrates his point using a scene from 2001: A Space Odyssey, where HAL, the supercomputer, begs Dave not to terminate him. Ironically, as I was reading the article, a car commercial came on TV, parodying that same scene to advertise its GPS. And I had only just seen the ending to 2001: A Space Odyssey for the first time a few days ago--just that one scene--so I fully appreciated his point. Talk about deja vu! Or maybe I just imagined it all...

Over the past few years I’ve had an uncomfortable sense that someone, or something, has been tinkering with my brain, remapping the neural circuitry, reprogramming the memory. My mind isn’t going—so far as I can tell—but it’s changing.

Once I was a scuba diver in the sea of words. Now I zip along the surface like a guy on a Jet Ski.

Bruce Friedman, who blogs regularly about the use of computers in medicine, also has described how the Internet has altered his mental habits. “I now have almost totally lost the ability to read and absorb a longish article on the web or in print,”

“I can’t read War and Peace anymore,” he admitted. “I’ve lost the ability to do that. Even a blog post of more than three or four paragraphs is too much to absorb. I skim it.”

Emergency landing for Ryanair plane hit by birds

A Ryanair flight was forced to make an emergency landing at one of Italy's busiest airports yesterday after it flew into a flock of birds.

The aircraft, which was carrying 166 passengers, suffered "substantial damage" and engine problems as it came in to land at Ciampino airport in Rome at 8am.

The airport, Rome's second-largest, was forced to close and was not expected to reopen until today. Some passengers had to exit the aircraft using inflatable chutes after the landing gear on one side of the Boeing 737 collapsed, preventing it from being towed away. Two cabin crew members and eight passengers were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The German, who was travelling from Budapest to Dublin, suffered a severely swollen neck.

NASA says the Phoenix Lander -- depicted here in an artist's rendering -- has been silent since last week.

(CNN) -- A dust storm and the onset of Martian winter have brought the Phoenix Mars Lander's mission to an end, NASA announced Monday.

"We are actually ceasing operations, declaring an end to mission operations at this point," project manager Barry Goldstein with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory told reporters in a teleconference.

Mission controllers last heard from the vehicle on November 2.

Despite ongoing efforts to re-establish contact using NASA satellites in orbit around Mars, the spacecraft is silent.

"We'll constantly turn on the radio and try to hail Phoenix to see if it is alive, but at this point nobody on the team has any expectations of that happening," Goldstein said. "But we do hope the vehicle will surprise us once again."

Jim O'Neill was flying his Cessna plane at 15,000 feet when he suddenly lost his sight while suffering a stroke last Friday.

The 65-year-old, who had taken off from Prestwick airport and was on his way to Colchester in Essex, radioed for help and the RAF responded, sending a jet to his aid.

The military aircraft flew alongside Mr O'Neill and guided him down to land at RAF Linton-on-Ouse in north Yorkshire.

He was taken to hospital where doctors discovered that the stroke had caused blood the back of his head to put pressure on the optic nerve, blinding him.

BROWNSVILLE, Wis. — Not long after the wind turbines began to spin in March near Gerry Meyer's home, his son Robert, 13, and wife, Cheryl, complained of headaches.

They have trouble sleeping, and Cheryl Meyer, 55, sometimes feels a fluttering in her chest. Gerry is sometimes nauseated and hears crackling.

The culprit, they say, is the whooshing sound from the five industrial wind turbines near the 6-acre spread where they have lived for 37 years. "I don't think anyone should have to put up with this," says Gerry Meyer, who compares the sound to a helicopter or a jet taking off.

As more turbines are built, the noise they create is stirring debate. Industry groups such as the American Wind Energy Association say there's no proof they make people sick, but complaints of nausea, insomnia and other problems have surfaced near wind farms across the USA.

Abortion: Not really an option since we lost 2/3 of the world's population.

National Security: How about international security. We need to protect our world from any future invasion. There won't be another alien attack under Whitmore's watch.

Education: It looks like education is free too. We need all the smart people we can get. Due do the disaster we only have a few college campuses to choose from.

We want a President who doesn't believe in red or blue states, but one who believes that we should spend every single dollar on a pending alien attack. He should be a single dad who's sort of kind of looking for a woman. These are the things I need to see in my candidate.

My Vote 4 President!

There has been a lot of talk about who is best fit to run this country in the midst of a financial crisis, two wars, global warming, and healthcare crisis. I don't think any of our candidates are qualified. I wrestled with who I was going to vote for until it finally hit me.

I'm voting for President Thomas Whitmore.

You may remember he was our President during our Independence Day attack in 1996.

McCain and Obama like to talk about how they "reach across party lines". Whitmore reached across the universe. He tried to strike a deal with the aliens even after they bombed our cities. That's the type of leadership we need in Washington.

To top it all off, he shows his true patriotism by flying a fighter jet in the last battle to help save the world from an vicious alien attack. Did you see him handle that fighter jet? He's like a real life Luke Skywalker.

But the flying car could become a reality in two years, claim its makers.

Called the Autovolantor, it is being marketed as the perfect way for the rich and famous to avoid traffic jams, simply by taking to the skies.

Its creators say it will cost £500,000 and allow drivers to reach speeds of 100mph on the ground and 150mph in the air.

Designer Bruce Calkins says the car, based on the £200,000 Ferrari 599 GTB, will be powered by eight fans mounted in its fuselage.

He said: 'On the ground these fans push the vehicle around with a firm but not-too-powerful thrust of deflected air.
