Every week, it seems a scientific study appears disproving what last week's study showed. Yesterday saw a classic medical volte face: aspirin, which has been prescribed to millions of people over the decades as a protective measure against heart disease

After years of headlines about the benefits of aspirin,

In the last couple of weeks, we have also learnt that a father's presence at childbirth is bad for the mother, that drinking three cups of coffee a day protects against liver disease (for people with hepatitis C) and that consuming alcohol cuts a woman's chances of conceiving by IVF. Yet fathers have been encouraged to attend childbirth for decades, coffee has been implicated in umpteen health scares, and alcohol is known to be good for the heart.

Researchers from the University of Wisconsin, Manitoba in Canada are also under investigations. However, some researchers have long fled the country after realizing that charges may be brought against them.

As a result, proposed stem cell project between Stanford University and Nairobi University has already been postponed due to the various abuses that are going on in Kenya.

Apart from kidnappings, abuses have involved embryo destruction at alarming levels.

Savage, 40, is due to give birth to a boy within the next two weeks via cesarean section. When it happens, biological parents Paul and Shannon Morell, of Michigan, will be nearby, waiting to meet their son.

"How do you thank somebody for what they've done?" Shannon Morell said. "I could say thank you a million different ways."

The Savages say the fertility clinic transferred the wrong frozen embryo to Carolyn's womb in early February. Ten days later, Sean Savage got a call from a doctor saying his wife was pregnant with someone else's child.

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Carolyn Savage didn't know what to think, what to say, where to look as the ultrasound wand glided over her belly. It was supposed to be her baby inside. Not someone else's.

Yet here she was in her doctor's office with the baby's biological mother, both brought together by a terrible error at a fertility clinic. A doctor, they said, had given Savage the wrong embryo, and now she was carrying the other woman's child.

"The wand is on my abdomen and the technician's talking to someone else: 'There's your baby's nose. There's your baby's head,'" she said. "It was surreal."

Embryo mix-ups at fertility clinics are extremely rare. In those few instances, they've degenerated into custody battles, ugly lawsuits and at least one abortion. But not this time.

For men with fertility problems, some doctors are prescribing a very conventional way to have a baby: more sex.

In a study of 118 Australian men with damaged sperm, doctors found that having sex every day for a week significantly reduced the amount of DNA damage in their patients' sperm. Previous studies have linked better sperm quality to higher pregnancy rates.

The research was announced Tuesday at a meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Amsterdam.

Dr. David Greening of Sydney IVF, a private fertility clinic in Australia, and colleagues looked at 118 men who had damaged sperm. Greening and colleagues told the men to have sex every day for a week. After seven days, the doctors found that in 81 percent of the men, there was a 12 percent decrease in the amount of damaged sperm.

Many fertility experts suggest men abstain from sex before their partners have in-vitro fertilization, to try to elevate their sperm counts.

It is well known that having too few sperm can cut a man's chances of fatherhood.

But some may be suffering because they are producing super-sperm which are too fast and powerful, scientists believe.

Evolutionary biologist Oren Hasson believes they race past the defences thrown up by a woman's body so effectively that more than one sperm penetrates the egg.

This process, known as polyspermy, ruins the egg - and the chances of fertilisation.
In Britain, around one in six couples has trouble conceiving naturally and almost 35,000 women a year resort to IVF.

Dr Hasson believes stressful lifestyles, infection and pollution alone cannot explain the high levels of infertility.

His research suggests they result from an 'evolutionary arms race' in which male and female bodies undergo subtle changes to improve fertility.

If both make improvements at the same time, fertility will benefit. But if the two are out of step, trouble ensues.

Four baby monkeys created in a laboratory in the United States could hold the key to the eradication of a class of incurable genetic diseases, scientists revealed today.

In an experiment that brings the creation of babies with three biological parents a step closer, Spindler, Spindly and twins Mito and Tracker were born through IVF using a technique that should make it possible to prevent women who carry genetic disorders of the mitochondria from passing them on to their children.

Scientists have produced four baby monkeys who each have three biological parents.

They used an IVF procedure designed to stop the spread of incurable inherited diseases.

Scientists believe the breakthrough could lead to the first geneticallyengineered children within a few years.

It has provoked an ethical storm, however. Critics say it is a step towards an era of hybrid children and warn that it erodes the sanctity of life.

The technique is intended to help women who carry genetic diseases. It involves transferring healthy DNA from the mother's egg cell into an egg donated by another woman.

Children conceived by the technique would inherit DNA from three sources - their mother, the donor and their father.

The American team who produced the macaque monkeys - named Mito, Tracker, Spindler and Spindy - say the technique could be used to eradicate potentially fatal forms of inherited epilepsy, blindness and heart disease.

A woman is pregnant with a record-breaking 12 babies, the Sun reported Monday.

The teacher, who has not yet been named, is expecting six boys and six girls, according to reports. She conceived the babies following fertility treatments, after suffering a number of miscarriages.

The woman, who will need constant medical monitoring, reportedly told doctors she was "feeling fine and looking forward to hugging her six boys and six girls."

If the woman does succeed in carrying a majority of the babies to term, Alvarez said she will need constant monitoring, and will more than likely need to be hospitilized.

"The rates of premature labor for multiples are astronomical," he added.

"The woman could have been receiving ovulation induction treatment, which stimulates egg production. You don't have the same control as with IVF," said Dr. Mark Hamilton, of the British Fertility Society.

Scientists claim sperm 'first'

The researchers believe the work could eventually help men with fertility problems to father a child.

But other experts say they are not convinced that fully developed sperm have been created.

Writing in the journal Stem Cells and Development, the Newcastle team say it will be at least five years before the technique is perfected.

They began with stem cell lines derived from human embryos donated following IVF treatment.

The stem cells had been removed when the embryo was a few days old and were stored in tanks of liquid nitrogen.

The stem cells were brought to body temperature and put in a chemical mixture to encourage them to grow. They were "tagged" with a genetic marker which enabled the scientists to identify and separate so-called "germline" stem cells from which eggs and sperm are developed.

The Newcastle team say the sperm were fully mature, mobile sperm and they have produced a video to back up the research.
