"As soon as a durable peace takes hold we need to move forward with dialogue and peaceful negotiations."

DEBKAfile’s geopolitical experts note that on the surface level, the Russians are backing the separatists of S. Ossetia and neighboring Abkhazia as payback for the strengthening of American influence in tiny Georgia and its 4.5 million inhabitants. However, more immediately, the conflict has been sparked by the race for control over the pipelines carrying oil and gas out of the Caspian region.

The Russians may just bear with the pro-US Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili’s ambition to bring his country into NATO. But they draw a heavy line against his plans and those of Western oil companies, including Israeli firms, to route the oil routes from Azerbaijan and the gas lines from Turkmenistan, which transit Georgia, through Turkey instead of hooking them up to Russian pipelines.

Clip Source: www.debka.com

Georgian tanks and infantry, aided by Israeli military advisers, captured the capital of breakaway South Ossetia, Tskhinvali, early Friday, Aug. 8, bringing the Georgian-Russian conflict over the province to a military climax.

Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin threatened a “military response.”

Former Soviet Georgia called up its military reserves after Russian warplanes bombed its new positions in the renegade province

In Moscow’s first response to the fall of Tskhinvali, president Dimitry Medvedev ordered the Russian army to prepare for a national emergency after calling the UN Security Council into emergency session early Friday.

Reinforcements were rushed to the Russian “peacekeeping force” present in the region to support the separatists.

Georgian tanks entered the capital after heavy overnight heavy aerial strikes, in which dozens of people were killed.

Lado Gurgenidze, Georgia's prime minister, said on Friday that Georgia will continue its military operation in South Ossetia

Tags: putin, president mikhail saakashvili, oil routes, gas lines, transit georgia and turkey, western oil companies, israel

<clipSource>http://www.debka.com/article.php?aid=1358</clipSource>

Israel and the War in Georgia

clipped by: klippety
clipper's remarks: Sometimes, when things seem out of place, they are. The facts are relevant and suggestive.

Dr. Zack seems to fit the profile of motive, means, and opportunity (access), upon reading, then the now deceased. He is also a dual Israeli citizen with an obvious prejudice and gripe against Arabs, even if American citizens with whom he worked. Do not miss the anonymous letter to the FBI that called his Arab co-worker a "bioterrorist", which the FBI considered a hoax after investigation, and how close that sounds to the Anthrax hoax letters that said "Allah is great".

Clip Source: www.washington-report.org

While Media Spotlights One Anthrax Suspect, Another
              Is Too Hot to Touch

Before the investigation of Dr. Hatfill captured national headlines,
another insider scientist had come under FBI scrutiny without much
media fanfare. It was easy to miss the few stories published in
January 2002 about Lt. Col. Philip Zack, who, like Hatfill, also
had access to a well-equipped laboratory with lax security. Zack,
moreover, actually worked with military-grade anthrax at Fort Detrick.

Dr. Zack left Fort Detrick in December 1991 amid allegations of
unprofessional conduct. The Jewish scientist and others were accused
of harassing their co-worker, Dr. Ayaad Assaad, until the Egyptian-born
              American scientist quit

Inexplicably, the national press ignored these documented unauthorized
visits to a top-secret government lab embroiled in the anthrax attacks.
Did journalists fear being labeled anti-Semitic for casting suspicions
              on a Jewish scientist?

She is convinced that the FBI knows who sent the anthrax letters

Tags: anthrax, dr. zack, bioterrorism, 9/11

<clipSource>http://www.washington-report.org/archives/sept-oct02/0209018.html</clipSource>

Truth and Consequences Under the Israeli Occupation

clipped by: ng_noah
clipper's remarks: Omer says :'I am proud to call myself a Palestinian and a journalist. In April, Reuters cameraman Fadel Shana was killed by fire from an Israeli tank. He was in a car, clearly marked as press. According to Amnesty International, "Fadel Shana appears to have been killed deliberately although he was a civilian taking no part in attacks on Israel's forces."

Reporters Without Borders has condemned the Israeli military's widespread "abusive behavior" of Palestinian journalists. And the Committee to Protect Journalists reports that journalists covering Israeli military actions in the West Bank and Gaza "contend with perennial abuses at the hands of Israeli forces." In 2007 alone, Israeli soldiers shot photographers from Agence France-Presse, Al-Ayyam newspaper and Al-Aqsa TV. The television cameraman, Imad Ghanem, fell to the ground when wounded. Israeli forces then shot him twice more in the legs. Both of his legs have been amputated.

<clipSource>http://www.sott.net/articles/show/163199-Truth-and-Consequences-Under-the-Israeli-Occupation</clipSource>

Gates Warns about War with Iran

clipped by: blueridge
clipper's remarks: Israeli press reports.

Clip Source: www.haaretz.com

Gates: War with Iran would be 'disastrous'

A war with Iran would be "disastrous on a number of levels," according to U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.

In an article appearing in the latest issue of Parameters, the U.S. Army War College quarterly, Gates wrote that with the army already bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan, "another war in the Middle East is the last thing we need" - despite the fact that Iran "supports terrorism," is "a destabilizing force throughout the Middle East and Southwest Asia and, in my judgment, is hell-bent on acquiring nuclear weapons."

Nevertheless, he continued, "the military option must be kept on the table,

But this is not the first time he has warned against war with Iran; he also did so in a speech at West Point, the U.S. military academy, three months ago. The current article is based on that speech.

Gates omits Israel from the list of the United States' main allies.

Tags: israel, iran, war

<clipSource>http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1006129.html</clipSource>
