Canon partnered with the American Park Network to offset their carbon with the purchase of trees. The APN then donates trees to local parks and works with community groups to plant them.
It would be a cool deal, but it's not much coming from canon. Not while they continue to produce highly wasteful print cartridges, and as far as I can see still haven't come out with a refillable cartridge. Canon is so so NOT GREEN!

The Ugandan government has announced a major offensive against gays and lesbians in the African country, saying it will prosecute anyone who comes out.

Sex between two people of the same sex already is a criminal offense in Uganda - punishable by life imprisonment - but Ethics and Integrity Minister James Nsaba Buturo told a weekend news conference he does not know of a single conviction.

Buturo said the government is concerned about what he called the “mushrooming” number of gays and lesbians in the country.

Last year Uganda’s leading Muslim cleric called for gays to be rounded up and marooned on an island in Lake Victoria until they die.

The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission last year said that it had uncovered evidence that the Bush administration has funded groups in Uganda that actively promote violence and discrimination against lesbians and gay men.

I asked President Museveni to get us an island on Lake Victoria and we take these homosexuals and they die out there

Canadian farmer has won California's annual giant pumpkin contest

ELK GROVE, California — A Canadian farmer has won a California contest with a record-setting 696.95-kilogram pumpkin.

Jake van Kooten of Port Alberni, B.C., collected $9,219 in prize money at the Elk Grove Giant Pumpkin and Harvest Festival.

Van Kooten said he left Thursday to drive the giant pumpkin down from Vancouver Island to take part in the weekend festival.

A spokesman for the festival, Steve Capps, said Van Kooten's entry set a new California record by one pound (450 grams).

UNLIKE most Roman Catholic schools in the New York area, which embrace students regardless of their religion, Chaminade High School here requires a baptismal certificate to register.

“No exception,” said the Rev. James C. Williams, a cherub-faced priest who is the school’s president. “We advertise that pretty clearly because this is who we are. I don’t have room for all the Catholics who want to be here.”

As the school year began this month, Chaminade students bowed their heads for a 10-minute morning prayer, repeated in an abbreviated version before every class. “Here I Am, Lord,” drifted through the hallways as the glee club practiced for a school Mass. Shortly before noon, the chapel filled with teenagers for a lunchtime prayer service.

Enrollment at Long Island’s 11 Catholic high schools is up about 7 percent since 2002, to nearly 13,000 (though down about 20 percent at elementary schools), according to officials with the Rockville Centre Diocese, which covers Long Island.

clipper's remarks: Woodruff's house uses just 25% of the energy of a conventional house of the same size. His winter power costs are a $30 electricity bill each month and a cord of wood. In the summer, power is needed only for the hot water heater and appliances.

Yet the little 1,100-sq.-ft. house is as straightforward as you can get. No high-tech gizmos. No elaborate contortions. The house relies on simple architectural principles -- windows oriented for sunlight, cross breezes for ventilation, overhangs for shade -- basics that were much lauded in the 1940s and '50s, but less emphasized since.

They included large doors that can be opened for cross-breezes. They designed the heating so energy is used and reused within rooms. The living/ dining/kitchen area is one big room heated by a wood stove on rainy days, and the sun on sunny days.

"The public rooms face east, the logic being you want those to heat up with the sun first in the winter and in the summer, you want to avoid the hot western sun.

The main room, with a 16-foot-long kitchen countertop, is the life of the house.

Mr. Woodruff's modest weekend home on Mayne Island in the southern Gulf Islands chain of British Columbia, took second place in a North America-wide architectural competition for sustainable principles and energy conservation.

"The Gulf Islands House stood out for its elegance and simplicity," juror Robert Rogers of Roger Marvel Architects said in an e-mail interview. "Its sustainable features were subtly woven into the basic program for a small house. Its size alone represents a fundamentally green attitude. We felt that the project was a graceful whole and neatly detailed."

"To say something as simple as the building should be lit throughout the day by the sun becomes a radical position," Mr. Woodruff says. "It's ridiculous, but it does. We have clients who insist on air conditioning. Psychologically in the modern world, people think that air conditioning is fundamental."

Almost overnight, its population became the wealthiest on Earth.

The bars and restaurants of Iceland's capital are packed, the Range Rovers and BMWs are parked nose to tail all along the streets of the central 101 district, and music is pumping from a black stretch Hummer limousine cruising by.

Iceland is on the brink of collapse. Inflation and interest rates are raging upwards. The krona, Iceland's currency, is in freefall and is rated just above those of Zimbabwe and Turkmenistan. One of the country's three independent banks has been nationalised, another is asking customers for money, and the discredited government and officials from the central bank have been huddled behind closed doors for three days with still no sign of a plan. International banks won't send any more money and supplies of foreign currency are running out.

Icelanders drink more Coca-Cola than anyone else in the world.

Not the end of the world

Scientists have quashed suggestions that a £350m experiment planned for the autumn could cause the destruction of the Earth.

The director of the laboratory commissioning the machine says there is "no chance" of the atom-smashing experiment causing a disaster, such as a black hole that would devour the entire Earth.

Researchers have spent eight years constructing the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island in New York state. Its goal is to smash the nuclei of atoms together and study their wreckage to determine the fundamental properties of matter.

Huge magnets are needed to accelerate the particles

RHIC takes atoms of gold and swings them around two 3.8 kilometre (2.4 mile) circular tubes where powerful magnets accelerate them to almost the speed of light. When they collide, they do so in minute collisions that are 10,000 times hotter than the Sun.
