Who wears the pants at Sky Harbor airport?

Not 30 Somali women who fought for the right to wear skirts on the job, and won.

The Muslim women balked at a planned policy change by their employer, GCA Services, (that's GCA's logo pictured above), that would have forced them to wear pants and a tucked-in shirt as they did their janitorial duties.

They'd been previously allowed to wear skirts; pants are too immodest for them.

Lisa Gopolan, a spokesperson for CAIR's Arizona office, says she wears blue jeans occasionally and that the decision to wear pants or not is a personal decision. The Somali women are expressing their culture as well as their religion in wanting to wear skirts, and she didn't think other Muslim women who work at the airport would necessarily demand different attire.

Christian College in Indonesia Will Relocate After Violent Attacks

Attacks on their campus have forced students at a Christian college in Indonesia’s capital to take refuge in tents and in the lobby of the parliament building for nearly a month, while the theology school has agreed to relocate out of a predominantly Muslim neighborhood, the Associated Press reported.

The first assaults on the Arastamar Evangelical School of Theology, which is also known as Seta College, took place on July 25, when residents of the neighborhood in Jakarta entered the campus with machetes and Molotov cocktails. Eighteen students were injured in the clashes, and administrators evacuated the five dormitories after a second night of attacks.

Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim country, has traditionally tolerated minority religions. But recently, radical groups have attacked churches and even mosques that oppose a hard-line doctrine.

'Corpses Litter' Somali Port Following Islamic Takeover

Bodies littered this strategic port in southern Somalia and unidentified planes soared overhead yesterday, a day after it was seized by Islamist rebels in fighting that killed at least 70 people.

The loss of Kismayu to the al-Shabaab insurgents was another blow for Somalia's interim government, which signed a peace deal with some opposition figures last week that has only seemed to stoke violence in the Horn of Africa nation.

"We are now collecting the corpses lying in the streets," resident Mohamed Farah, 55, told Reuters.

"The town is calm today and we're busy burying the victims of the fighting. The Islamists are at the abandoned sea and air ports, and people here are hoping to reopen their businesses."

A spokesman for Somali opposition hardliners based in Eritrea congratulated the insurgents on seizing Kismayu.

"We'll continue our war against militiamen and all troops until we rule the whole country by Islamic law," said Ismail Adow

JAKARTA, August 19

On Sunday (August 17) a Muslim mob stormed a church service in Cipayung, East Jakarta, forcing Christians to flee and then erecting banners in the street declaring a ban on “churches and religious services.”

As about 20 church members were celebrating the nation’s Independence Day at the service, the angry assailants arrived at the Pentecostal Church of Indonesia in Pondok Rangon village, Cipayung, at 9:30 a.m. shouting “Allahu Akbar!” or “God is greater!” Some in the mob were neighbors, but the majority were not local residents, according to pastor Chris Ambessa.

Church members tried to close the gate leading into the church compound, but the mob forced its way in, storming into the welcoming room of the church and overturning furniture.

Ambessa managed to close a roller door protecting the room where services were held. But the attackers then chased church members out into the street, warning them not to return for future services.

The Taliban are adding a new layer of tumult to notoriously unstable and nuclear-armed Pakistan.

Two suicide bombers killed 60 people and wounded another 50 yesterday when they tried to attack Pakistan's largest munitions plant at the huge military-industrial complex in Wah, just 30 kilometres northwest of the capital Islamabad.

The attackers apparently were unable to get past the main gates of the high-security compound before exploding their bombs. If they had, they might have been able to trigger a disastrous explosion that would have struck a devastating blow at Pakistan's government.

The bombing came just days after the resignation of President Pervez Musharraf left Pakistan's rival political parties squabbling over who should lead the country.

Taliban Warn 'Un-Islamic' UNICEF to Stop Activities

The Taliban have faxed a letter to the UNICEF office in Peshawar, asking it stop its activities in Pakistan. The Urdu-language newspaper Roznama Jasarat reported that the Taliban accused UNICEF of carrying out anti-Islamic activities.

According to the report, the Taliban said that about 6,000 non-governmental organizations are engaged in anti-Islamic activities.

"I am a Muslim first, lawyer second; I am Muslim first, MP second," asserted PKR Kulim Bandar Baru parliamentarian Zulkifli Noordin today, breaking his silence for the first time after fronting the commotion which disrupted the Bar Council's ‘Conversion to Islam' forum on Aug 9.

"It is not right... for me Islam comes first, a party member second. If you attack Islam I'll be there," he exerted.

"When you talk about the sensitivity of others you should have it behind closed doors and invite those of authority. You don't invite every Tom, Dick and Harry to talk about Islam.

"You cannot look at the forum in isolation and say that they are having a forum, talking about some rights because you look at the background of the Bar Council... they have been very consistent with their anti-Islam stand," said Zulkifli.

"You have a misleading fact. There was no question of us stopping the forum. They have already discussed with the police to stop it... it's not because of us.

ILIGAN, Philippines (AFP) - - Troops on Tuesday stepped up a manhunt for Muslim separatist rebels after a murderous rampage in the southern Philippines left 38 people dead and threw peace negotiations into chaos.

Hundreds of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels attacked towns in Lanao del Norte and Sarangani provinces Monday, looting businesses, burning houses and holding dozens of hostages.

The near-simultaneous raids began at dawn, triggering intense gunbattles in the mostly Christian towns of Kolambugan and Kauswagan that raged until noon.

Villagers were trickling back into their devastated communities Tuesday, only to find debris where their houses once stood.

The death toll now stands at 38, including three soldiers, while dozens of others were injured and nearly 10,000 displaced by the fighting.

Drum musician killed after receiving frequent threats from militants

UNKNOWN militants have killed a drum musician in Logar province, one of the victim’s family said.

Hazrad Din, a 50-year-old drum player, had played drums at celebrations in the province’s Baraki Barak district for the last 30 years.

Ziaul Din, his uncle, said Hazrad Din was killed by two men riding a motorcycle while leaving a marriage party in the Rustam Khel district of the province on Saturday.

The musician had received frequent threats from the Taliban over the last year and was warned not to play at wedding parties, the uncle said.

The Taliban have failed to comment on the murder.

The governor of Baraki Barak district, Yasin Lodin, said they have launched an investigation into the killing.

2-Bomb blast at hospital kills 23 in Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Aug 19 (Reuters) - A suspected suicide bomber killed 23 people in the compound of a hospital in northwest Pakistan on Tuesday as members of a religious minority were holding a protest, police said.

Violence in northwest Pakistan is a major test for the coalition government led by the party of slain former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, especially after the resignation of former army chief Pervez Musharraf as president on Monday.

The bomb went off outside a hospital in Dera Ismail Khan, 280 km (175 miles) southwest of Islamabad, as Shi'ite Muslims were protesting against the killing of a leader. Gunmen shot the leader earlier and his body had been taken to the hospital.

North West Frontier Province police chief Naveed Malik Khan said 23 people had been killed in the blast, and up to 20 wounded. He said Sunni Muslim militants were believed responsible.

Most of the dead were protesters, a city official said.

Yemen detains 9 people for converting

Yemeni police have detained at least nine people this year for converting from Islam to Christianity, a security official said Tuesday.

The nine were arrested between May and early August and remain in police custody, said the official.

Converting from Islam to any other religion is illegal in Yemen and can be punishable by death. But in previous cases, those arrested are usually released after they revoke their new faith and pledge to return to Islam.

Three of the nine were detained west of the capital, San'a, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. He declined to provide details about the others.

A family member of one of the detained said he fears those arrested could face torture or abuse in prison. The family member, who declined to be named because of security concerns, said Hani el-Dahayni, 30, was detained in May after police stormed his office and confiscated computers and compact discs.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia on Tuesday canceled a concert by Canadian rock singer Avril Lavigne, saying it may taint the Muslim-majority country's independence day celebrations after the Islamic opposition slammed her show as being "too sexy."

The Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry said it had decided not to permit Lavigne's show because it was unsuitable to Malaysian culture and could not be held on Aug. 29, two days ahead of independence day.

Last year, R&B singer Beyonce moved her show from Malaysia to Indonesia, and Christina Aguilera skipped the country on an Asian tour after a controversy erupted over a dress code for foreign artists.

Malaysia requires all performers to wear clothes without obscene or drug-related images and be covered from the chest to the knees. They must also refrain from jumping, shouting, hugging and kissing on stage.

Stop the 'War' on Terror: Calling It a 'War' Is a Boon to Terrorist Recruiters

Since 1968, more than three-quarters of terrorist groups have ended because of a political settlement or joint policing and intelligence efforts. But a political solution is not in the cards with Al Qaeda. Its goal – to take down multiple state regimes to create a pan-Islamic caliphate – is too radical to lead to any sort of negotiated settlement with Middle Eastern governments.

A good start toward peace, though, would be for Washington to stop thinking of this as a "war" with a battlefield solution.

The term "war" also has a symbolic cost. It feeds into the jihad or "holy war" concept that attracts the attention of potential terrorists by elevating them to "holy warrior" status. Terrorists should be perceived and described as criminals, not holy warriors.

What we are engaged in, more aptly, is "counterterrorism."

Clergymen say extremists blame Christian prayers for Muslim leader’s death.

ILORIN, Nigeria, August 14 (Compass Direct News) – Blaming the death of their leader on Christian prayers, an Islamist group that launched a hate campaign in response to an evangelistic event in 2004 is reportedly attacking Christians in this Kwara state capital with renewed virulence, area Christians said.

At least three Christians have died and several others have been injured in attacks with machetes and other weapons since June, clergymen said. They said the attacks began after the death in May of Dr. Ali Olukade, head of a local group of Islamists called Tibliq, possibly patterned after the worldwide Tablighi Jamaat missionary movement.
