This just in: Hurricane of delicious irony slams Republican National Convention, flooding the streets of Minneapolis/St. Paul with rivers of savage hypocrisy as levees of evangelical denial and sexual confusion overflow into the streets, leaving stunned party members scrambling in vain for shaky moral high ground.

Yes, the rumors are true. The cosmic votes have all been tallied, and I do believe we can now say, with some measure of happy certainty, that God appears to be just as sick-to-death of the Republican Party as the rest of us.

Let's imagine the hot 'n' febrile reaction if, say, an enormous storm had come thundering through Denver during DNC '08, if some gale force winds or bowel-shaking rainfall had shut the city down, prophetically timing itself just right to thwart the Democratic Party's biggest party and stop Barack Obama from making all sorts of stunning history as he delivered his record-breaking speech to a wary and Bush-ravaged nation.

To be sure, it's moments like these that make it difficult not to take some delight, not to sit back and feel the ironic righteousness melt over us like hot Cheez-Whiz over an Alaskan mooseburger. After all, Sarah Palin is anti-choice, pro-abstinence, anti sex-ed, religiously fundamentalist, a creationist, about as friendly to feminism and women's reproductive rights as John McCain is to his beloved "gooks."

But here's the saddest part of all: Governor Palin knew. She absolutely had to realize that her daughter's unfortunate condition would come to light when McCain offered her this bizarre gig. To which we can only say: Way to shove your own daughter under the wheels of the GOP Machine, Governor Palin. Ultimate sacrifice indeed.

clipper's remarks: Why buy air time when cable news will run your ads for free? I've seen three of these ads aired on CNN today, as pundits talked about them. The irony of this is that, without the pundits discussing these things, no one would've seen them.

In fact, I saw Wolf Blitzer discussing this very free media story, during which he ran McCain's ad!

According to a group that monitors political advertising across the country, only one of the three Hillary Clinton-themed ads attacking Sen. Barack Obama has been broadcast so far --- and that ad, featuring a Clinton delegate who now endorses McCain is only airing in Toledo, Ohio, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The monitoring firm says they are "basically video press releases."

The name Kizzy, which belonged to a "Roots" character, skyrocketed from oblivion to become the 17th most popular name for black girls in Illinois in 1977. Islam began in these years to have a clear influence, too, most visibly with Cassius Clay adopting the name Muhammad Ali in 1964. Others followed suit, including two fellows named Lew Alcindor and LeRoi Jones, whom you know as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Amiri Baraka. Around this time, an American boy named Barack Hussein Obama would be born. His given names, of Semitic origin, mean "blessed" and "good." Soon, out of these more political traditions grew a new one of creating names whose sounds the parents merely found pleasing.

So the next time you are tempted to ridicule a name of any color -- black, white, red, celebrity, whatever -- it would be generous, and prudent, to do a bit of research.

What's up with black names, anyway?

That African-Americans have a tendency to buck more common names is obvious. Take a quick glance down the Olympic roster. It is the black names that disproportionately stand out: Tayshaun, Deron, Rau'shee, Raynell, Deontay, Taraje, Jozy, Kerron, Hyleas, Chaunte, Bershawn, Lashawn, Sanya, Trevell, Sheena, Ogonna, Dremiel.

From the beginning, many black Americans had distinctive names. The weirdly classical Caesar was a particularly common slave name, bestowed, it would seem, by slaveholders with a profoundly unfunny sense of irony.

Distinctive black naming persisted through the centuries; the folklorist Newbell Niles Puckett turned up thousands of such names culling records from 1619 to the mid-1940s, names like Electa, Valantine and Zebedee.

Then, in the 1960s, something changed, resulting in an unprecedented spike in black creative names

I never thought I would type the words above. In my mind, pigs would fly and Tyra Banks would leave television and turn to living a quiet life of knitting socks in Montana before Crocs, the most hideous and loathed of all footwear would be in Vogue, and not just any Vogue but French Vogue.

Above is Raquel Zimmermann in a photo that is rumored to be part of a spread in the September issue. If you look closely, you'll see the orange monstrosities displayed without a hint of irony on Zimmermann's feet.

This is what 100 year-old Hattie Miller’s niece found out after hearing about the existence of South Carolina unclaimed money in the State’s Unclaimed Property website. Converse Chellis, SC Treasurer personally delivered the check to what may be the oldest recipient of US unclaimed funds according to Fox Carolina News. The national unclaimed money total has amassed $33 billion spread out among the various State Treasuries across the U.S. This just reflects the irony that a lot of people are so busy trying to make a living that they don’t realize they’re missing money and much of it is in the government’s hands. Global warming deniers forced to cancel meeting due to Tropical Storm Fay.

This week, Americans for Prosperity (AFP) planned to have town hall meetings in Ft. Myers and West Palm Beach, FL. As the Wonk Room’s Brad Johnson notes, “AFP is a front group for the right-wing pollution company Koch Industries, with an agenda of attacking ‘global warming alarmism‘ and promoting increased offshore drilling.” In an ironic twist, AFP has canceled its meetings because of Tropical Storm Fay. From a message on the group’s website:

Ft. Myers and West Palm Beach Town Hall Meetings Rescheduled

The August 19th Ft. Myers town hall and August 21st West Palm Beach town hall will be rescheduled as a result of Tropical Storm Fay. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Google’s web-based e-mail service has been suffering from severe downtime for many users since mid-afternoon Monday (Pacific time). Some users can’t get into their accounts at all, and others who can are seeing uncharacteristically mediocre performance. Some users (like me) seem to be having no problems, but a few staffers here at Wired.com haven’t been able to log in for more than an hour.
