clipper's remarks: Like America, we had out War of Independence followed by a bloody Civil War on the issue of independence. This was also in common with many other states that gained independence.

We didn't gain full independence until 1948 when we took it without a shot being fired. We did lose 6 of our 9 counties of Ulster, our northern providence. Hopefully some day our "four green fields" will be reunited peacefully.

By Bush&Co's definition all our leaders would have been terrorists like Nelson Mandela, just like your own revered insurrectionists/freedom fighters/terrorists/founding fathers. Our longest serving PM and president de Valera would have been executed along with the 1916 Rising leaders only he was born in America.

Story of Grace Gifford and Joseph Plunkett sung By Jim Mc.Cann

When Grace Gifford, the sister-in-law of Tomas MacDonagh, picked Easter Sunday 1916 as the date on which she was to marry Joseph Plunkett she had obviously no idea of the tragic events ahead of them. Days before the planned wedding Joseph Plunkett, who suffered his entire life under respiration troubles, was admitted to the hospital and underwent an emergency operation.

On Easter Monday 1916, the day after the postponed wedding, Plunkett manned his post in the General Post Office (GPO) in Dublin to take part in the Easter Rising.

After the surrender of the rebels Joseph Plunkett was arrested and imprisoned in Kilmainham Gaol. Just hours before his execution on 4 May 1916 he married Grace Gifford in the jail chapel with two prison guards as witnesses.

Grace Gifford remained involved in the republican movement, especially in Sinn FÃ©in, while earning a living as commercial artist.

Low-Carb Muffins

Ingredients:

2 cups almond flour (almond meal)

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted

4 eggs

1/3 cup water

Sweetener to taste -- about 1/3 cup usually works well -- liquid preferred

Preparation:

1) Preheat oven to 350 F.

2) Butter a muffin tin. You can really do it with any size, but I'm basing the recipe on a 12-muffin tin.

3) Mix dry ingredients together well.

4) Add wet ingredients and mix thoroughly (You don't want strings of egg white in there and you don't have to worry about "tunnels" when you are using almond meal).

Although consisting of 98% water and some being the size of dustbin lids, biologists say they are "tough, robust animals", making tagging possible.

Around 10 Lion's Mane and 20 Barrel Jellyfish will be studied with particular interest in jellyfish as a food supply for leatherback turtles.

Experts from Swansea, Belfast and Cork will also examine how long they live.

Meanwhile, beachcombers who find any of the jellyfish washed up dead could claim a reward.

The research project is paying £25 for handing in the bright orange-topped tags, which are expected to begin washing up along the coast of Wales or the east coast of Ireland sometime over the next year.

The tags work as waterproof mini-computers.

Marine biologist Dr Jon Houghton said the idea "seems daft" but was necessary because experts know as much about jellyfish as they do about unicorns.

The study will take place at four sites

While surfing the net on 'Stumble', I came across an interview with President Bush on Irish television that caused a bit of a storm in 2004. The interview conducted by the tenacious Carol Coleman of Radio Television Ireland was not aired on American television, and Bush's press officers apparently complained vociferously about the rigorous questioning.

Coleman cut through the simplistic slogans about evil doers and freedom loving Americans and continued to ask Bush serious questions

The interview took place almost four years ago, but is the perfect illustration of a man elected purely on name recognition, dirty money, and no discernible talent.

The interview with Coleman should go down on record as definitive proof of Bush's utter incompetence, a priceless picture of a madman who had no business occupying the highest office of the land.

How The Greens Captured Energy Policy

New discoveries off Brazil and in the Gulf of Mexico have nearly doubled international oil reserves, pushing backwards from the "peak oil" date. And global warming, that notorious by-product of "oil addiction," has faded to the point that its advocates are now reduced to threatening dissenters with prison.

It has gone almost completely unacknowledged that with oil shale, offshore deposits, and new resources such as the hydrocarbon sludge deposits off B.C. and Alaska, the OPEC of the late 21st century is going to be right here. That's a goal worth working toward. Breaking the power of the Greens is yet another possible benefit.

Energy reform is an egg and rock situation for the Democrats. From the old Irish proverb: "When the rock hits the egg, alas for the egg. When the egg hits the rock, alas for the egg."

The Democrats -- Obama chief among them -- can neither adequately defend it nor abandon it, as is clearly shown by their refusal to even consider loosening drilling restrictions. The GOP holds all the cards on this one, and all they need to do is keep building the pressure. (Always granted, of course, that they play it better than their last few runs of hands.) No better electoral tool will be found during this cycle. We just can't expect results immediately - this will be a long and drawn-out battle, requiring maximum, sustained effort from all involved.

Environmentalism is a luxury, and like all such, is best taken in moderation. The environment requires protection, but that's all. Primitive panthiesm has no place in this millennium. Nature is not an utterly benign continuum, and human beings are not a disease. Pseudo-religious environmentalism has long outlived its welcome. It's time to bring down the curtain.
