New research suggests the herbal medicine St John's Wort could be a suitable alternative for treating depression.

St John's Wort is a herb taken from a bright yellow star-shaped flower.

It comes in capsules, as a liquid or a tea bag. It's been used for decades as an alternative medicine for people with stress or depression.

This study into how effective the herb is as a treatment was carried out in Munich, Germany.

It involved nearly 5,500 people who were all suffering from some form of depression, ranging from mild to severe.

The researchers compared the effects of St John's Wort with a placebo, or dummy pill, and a wide range of old and new anti-depressants.

Dr Klaus Linde, who led the study, said: "Overall, the St John's Wort extracts tested in the trials were superior to placebo, similarly effective as standard anti-depressants, and had fewer side effects."

Doctors think it works because the herb keeps serotonin, a chemical which makes you happy, in the brain for longer.

As part of a government backed drive to crack down on identity theft, details of all deaths in the UK will now be released on a weekly basis.

It is hoped that this move will help eliminate Impersonation of the Deceased (IOD) fraud which is currently one of the fastest growing forms of identity theft afflicting the UK.

The information is set to be released to select organisations as part of a partnership between the Registrars General for England & Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Any organisation can apply to receive the data, however they will have to undergo strict vetting procedures and agree to operate in accordance with a stringent licensing agreement before the highly sensitive information will be shared.

Credit reference agency, Experian, Tracesmart Ltd and Faraday Tracing Bureau are among the first companies who have been approved to receive the approximated 12,000 death records a week.

This would be done by giving European banks "the same rules to reclassify financial instruments from the trading book to the banking book, including those already held or issued". This is a reference to a rarely used rule in the US that allows banks to record assets at an amortised cost, rather than at its current market value.

The leaders of Europe's four largest economies vowed at the weekend not to let a single bank fail but said they would tackle their own national banking crises rather than pursue an EU-wide rescue.

At a summit in Paris on Saturday evening, President Nicolas Sarkozy and his German, British and Italian counterparts said they would ensure the "soundness and stability" of the financial system "using their own means".

They also called for a partial relaxation of mark-to-market accounting rules for assets, closer supervision of bankers' pay, further co-operation between regulators and fresh EU-wide rules on bank deposit guarantees.

While calling for flexibility in state aid rules, the four leaders also upped the pressure on Ireland, which has angered its partners with a blanket guarantee of bank debts. They said it would have to discuss its scheme with European Commission and the European Central Bank.

They may not have raped and pillaged, but "Viking" mice conquered the outer reaches of the British Isles all the same.

Rodents living in Wales, Scotland and Ireland can trace their ancestry to Norwegian house mice, presumably stowaways on Viking ships.

Because grain-eating house mice – Mus musculus domesticus – depend on dense human populations, they serve as a reliable proxy for human settlement and migration, says Jeremy Searle, an evolutionary biologist at the University of York, UK, who led the new study.

What surprised Searle's team was the difference in mitochondrial DNA from these "Viking" mice and those recovered in other parts of Britain. When they examined the ancestry of rodents from elsewhere in the British Isles, they found a link to Bronze Age human migrations, beginning about 2300 BC.

This probably means that the Vikings were the first humans to live densely enough in Scotland and Ireland to support house mice, Searle says.
