Suicide bombing kills 29 in Baqouba

BAGHDAD - A suicide bomber rode his bicycle into a crowd of police recruits in Baqouba on Monday, killing at least 29 people in a province that has become a battleground among U.S. forces, al-Qaida militants and Shiite radicals.

A group of Shiite and Sunni clerics, meanwhile, were rescued one day after they were kidnapped in the capital after meeting with the government to discuss how to coordinate efforts against al-Qaida in Iraq

Suicide bombings, viewed most often as the work of al-Qaida, have taken a mighty toll among police and army recruits and are carried out to discourage Iraqi men from joining the country's struggling security forces

Just moments after the vote in the Turkish parliament, the US president made a new appeal for Turkey not to carry out cross-border operations.

George Bush spoke to reporters during a conference at the White House:

"We are making it very clear to Turkey that we don't think it is in their interests to send troops into Iraq," said Bush.

"Actually, they have troops already stationed in Iraq. And they've had troops stationed there for quite a while. We don't think it's in their interests to send more troops in," he added.

Bush’s Interior Department is also threatening other large financial penalties against the group. The posters have been put up for earlier demonstrations. They conform to the government regulations and are completely legal. This is one more attack on Free Speech rights and an attempt to repress and criminalize those who are mobilizing against the Bush government.

The last thing Bush and Cheney want to see is a huge mass demonstration calling for Impeachment and End to the War at the moment that General David Petraeus makes his scheduled report to Congress about the “progress of the Iraq war.” Led by Iraq war veterans and their families, September 15 is shaping up as the biggest political showdown in recent years.

US Senate seeks Iraq troops vote

The first of the 21,500 extra troops are already in Baghdad

The US Senate is holding a rare Saturday session on whether to vote on a resolution criticising President George W Bush's troop surge in Iraq.

The session follows a non-binding vote in the House of Representatives, in which 17 Republicans joined the majority Democrats to oppose the rise.

Correspondents say Republicans could block a Senate vote, but Democrats will be able to claim moral victory.

Mr Bush now faces battles with Congress over funding for US troops in Iraq.

Although both the Congressional resolutions are non-binding, the president needs the legislators to support his $93bn (£48bn) emergency troop-funding measure.

Saturday's vote follows days of fierce debate, during which the Democrats have made it clear that more decisive steps to limit Mr Bush's war policy could follow.

The White House has dismissed the vote, and warned Congress against trying to cut off funding.

Under Mr Bush's new Iraq strategy, 21,500 extra troops are being sent, mostly to the capital Baghdad, to help enforce new security measures.

The Senate session is due to start at 0800 local time (1300 GMT).

Written by the Democrats, the resolution - identical to that in the House - states that the Senate "will continue to support and protect" US soldiers in Iraq but that it "disapproves" of the 21,500-strong troop increase.

But Democrats hold only a wafer-thin 51-49 majority in the chamber, and last week failed to gain the 60 votes needed to override Republican delaying tactics.

The BBC's Justin Webb in Washington says that if the Democrats manage to win a vote they will probably come out on top and further embarrass the White House.

If they lose, he says, they will still win a moral victory by trying to get the subject aired.

"Let us be clear: Anyone voting 'no' [on Saturday] is voting to give the president a green light to escalate the war."

The Baghdad man was accused of betraying other Sunnis to a Shiite militia in the mixed neighborhood of Mansour, receiving a $200 bounty for each one he identified. The posting even disclosed the name of the barbershop where Kika could be found. He ran for his life, friends and family told NEWSWEEK. At first he hid out in the Shiite neighborhood of Karrada, and then he fled the country.

Oct. 10, 2006 - The first year of the deployment was bearable, at least. Capt. Brad Velotta and his wife, Jodi, made it through by talking almost daily by phone and by e-mail. She shared photos of their fast-growing brood by email, and he kept his men alive in Iraq. But since August, when Brad's Blackhawk company and the rest of the 4-23 were redeployed to the heart of Baghdad, the couple has grown more distant, like two planets spinning farther away from each other. "This is just starting to get old for all of us. The phone calls are getting stale," Jodi said in an interview. "Everything is getting frustrating; you don't know if you are saying the right things."

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Religious and political leaders scrambled Thursday to halt a descent into all-out civil war after the destruction of a Shiite shrine sparked the worst sectarian violence the country has seen since the fall of Saddam Hussein, with scores of people killed in Baghdad in the past 24 hours.

An Iraqi mother, her face covered by the blood of her two policemen sons who were shot dead by gunmen, holds their shoes as she takes part in their funeral procession in Baqouba on Wednesday.
